  • Shipwrecks of South Wales. The Amazon was a 4 masted barque which ran aground during a severe gale on Margam Sands near Port Talbot on 1st September 1908.
The ship had just set off from Port Talbot with a cargo of coal bound for Chile South America when it ran into a severe south-westerly gale in Swansea Bay. It tried to seek shelter by Mumbles but was driven back across the bay to Margam Sands
Although close to the beach, the waves started to break up the wreck. Some of the crew tried to swim to the shore but 20 of the 28 crew lost their lives.
There isn’t easy access as it lies on Margam Sands near the harbour alongside the Port Talbot Steel Works. I parked at Maudlam Church and walked over the dunes to the beach then along Margam Sands, it was just over a 5-mile walk.
To see the wreck you have to visit at low tide, so check the tide times.
There are other wrecks nearby - there’s an old Cromwell tank and remains of a Mulberry Harbour which is leftover from WWII when they were practising The D-Day landings.

Thanks for the insight - a benefit event for the Amazon was held in Swansea in 1908

Park by the gas works! Left off the m4 neath direction! Follow the road to the end! Park up and cross the lines!! Nice walk!!

Thanks, it not a local story that many people know about. I was surprised how much of the ship was still visible after over 100 years.

Great video.Considering this disaster was forty years earlier there’s a lot more wreckage to see.

I used to walk from the steel mill to Nottage in the mid '70s quite often...never a soul to be seen until rest bay

It's probably slightly busier now with walkers but still very quiet.

An excellent video again, I've walked down to the altmark a few times, but I knew nothing about the amazon, so that's definitely now on the to do list, thanks 👍

Surprised how much of it was still there after so long. It about another 3 miles along the beach to the wreck from the Altmark. You just need to get the timing right to get low tide.
