I have a 1903 Springfield I bought off my uncle back in 1968. It was made in 1931 and my Uncle used it On the VFW Rifle team. It's the most accurate rifle I have with Redfield Iron peep sights. That doesn't surprise me you can make a shot with a rifle like that but I am impressed that you did it at that distance without a scope. Good information about the star Gauged barrel.

The star gauge stamp just confirms the barrel was adequately close to its design tolerance, however most barrels post WWI met that standard and they simply stopped doing it. There is no such thing as a "star gauged" rifle, just the barrel. The butt-trap is intended for an oiler. The rear sight base looks intact: you should be able to find a replacement sight and restore the rifle. Depending on how high the front sight is the rear sight may have blocked the view from the Lyman target sight and thus prompted its removal.
