Thanks for the helpful video. I needed that 'show me how' to give me the confidence to do it. For me it's not about business, just a retired guy having fun. Keep sharing helpful videos.
This is the best instructional video on making light boxes I've seen. I always thought it was my camera but I realize I need this box for what I sell on Ebay. Thanks so much. You explained everything so thoroughly!
hi,great job, i have made a few of these so maybe i could offer up a couple of good ideas? Instead of cutting-off the top + side flaps cover them in tin foil and you can angle them to send light into the box degree by degree until you are happy with result. in most cases you will not even need to use a flash. Also using different coloured tissue you will get different b/grounds, a different colour on each side can create a really professional look if you get it right. Sometimes the box can become a bit floppy, a strip of tape around the outside edges + corners of the panels before you cut them out will add some strength. (sorry to go on but i hope somebody likes the ideas)cheers, david
thank you so much for this video. being in hawaii there isn't really a place to buy a light box and didn't want to order. making this box was easy and simple and most of all it worked. my photos came out amazing. i used it for food. thanks again.
This is the best and most practicable tute on building a lightbox. Thanks! You could consider using butter paper instead of tissue paper. It's more durable.
Good tutorial. I suggest aiming the two lights more toward the white background instead of straight in from the side, which will help the background appear more as true white. Then add a 3rd light as a main light from the front, to one side of the camera. This will yield a more well lit product photo.
You can use anything that will diffuse the light from the lamps. Tissue paper, white sheets, etc. Just remember that the thicker the material, the more dim the light will be on the inside of the box.
Thank you, though because I didn't have two lamps, I used a tall LED lamp and shine it from the top. Then instead of tissue I used normal A4 paper. It worked well too. Thanks and great instructions.
I tried making my own before this and it didn't quite work well. Differences between my setup and this one is that I only had 2 sides cut out (not the top) and my light sources (flashlight and phone flashlight) were not as powerful. Guess it's time to cut another hole and pick up some white lights! Thanks for the video
I've seen these done with t-shirts...what's you opinion on t-shirt vs tissue? Thank you for the video, it's really helped us a lot at Non-Scents Flowers!
Made this today in 30 mins. Free box from a department store, 2 x lamps from K-Mart $20, 8 sheets of tissue paper = $2, sheet of white matte card-stock = $3.25. Total cost, $25.25
CHEAPEST WAY TO DO THIS: I used a free priority mail box from USPS. Tissue paper at your home. staples or tape. and printer paper. thats it! like 2$- free if you alredy have all!
@pattypatz1 I believe the exact cutter we used in the video was a Stanley 10-421 FatMax 18mm Snap-Off Knife. TH-cam currently wont let me post the link to amazon, but after a quick search you should find it! Hope this helps :)
me again, i forgot to mention,,if you super glue 3 pc`s of glass together (like a bench) when taking your pics objects appear to be in suspended animation and if the item is something like a coin + will not stand up a tiny peice of blu-tack at the back will be invisible, cheers, david
gisaclu Hi gisaclu, I like your idea of creating a suspended animation effect'. So when you mentioned '3 pc of glass together like a bench, what type of glass are you referring to here? Could you enlighten me here and where can i purchase it ?
jsiow4 hi,take 2 bits of glass about 2 inches square as uprights and then choose the length off the top piece which will form a kind of bench-seat across them. A piece of emery cloth on a block will smooth the edges + corners so you do not cut yourself. another style is to form a triangle for the base (platform) and lay the top on (like a table. Superglue applied with a toothpick works well but does not last as well as glass-glue. I used picture-frame glass but you could use any weight of glass up to plate (shop window) and you can get that out of most skips. if you have not cut glass it is very simple, your d.i.y. shop will sell you a glass-cutter and show you how to use it. The main thing to remember when cutting glass is to dip the cutting-wheel in oil just before the cut which must be done in one pass. I hope this is not too long winded but i hope it is of some help , cheers
@ricardot82 Yes you can! It's a matter of personal preference with exactly how much light you want in the shot, but if your photographing in a dark area, the more light the better!
What if you put a black background to absorb the light not hitting the object? I've found when I've help up an object in my hand it flashes out the backround to black and makes the best photos I've made yet!
Dollar Stores sell the paper. I'd use bright bulbs.. your camera can aways shorten the exposure if it's too bright - you don't want to use the camera flash which will bounce off your subject - causing reflections and that defeats the whole purpose of the diffused light via the tissue paper

We used a compact fluorescent light bulb that gives off a brighter white tint compared to that of a yellow one.

A tan tint is visible in the final shot because of the exposed cardboard. I imagine it could be resolved with some Wite-Out.

Awesome, thanks.
can you do this as a color black one? for these night effect shots? thanks
what brand of knife did you use. I made one of these.. a little bigger but my box knife didnt work as good as yours
You could with higher quality materials and stronger lights, however this of course makes it much more expensive :)
Would wax paper work for the windows? I heard that works just as well as the white cloth.
Does this work well for jewelry? I sell online and have a variety of items. Thank you
great vid, thanks! :)
so useful!!!
@ricardot82 Yes you can! It's a matter of personal preference with exactly how much light you want in the shot, but if your photographing in a dark area, the more light the better!

Can't take the guy seriously! Would make a great car salesman, seriously!
I love the simplicity of this light box, however the product is still under exposed.
what lights should i use?
Cool
How big are the bulbs. 40, 60, etc.Where do you get the tissue paper?
Dollar Stores sell the paper.
