  • Doctor Who has finally returned to its festive traditions with the brand new Christmas special The Church on Ruby Road. This rollercoaster adventure sees the new 15th Doctor Ncuti Gatwa burst into the life of new companion Ruby Sunday as they fight goblins. But is it good? And does it softly reboot the show the way it was clearly intended to do? Well, as always, that's what I'm here to find out!

My theory: In the time that it took Ruby to get downstairs, Mr. Flood and Fifteen went on a series of increasingly epic adventures across time and space. Hence why she now knows what a TARDIS is and the Doctor has changed his clothes.

i disagree about the doctor interacting with ruby’s mother. i immediately thought it was extremely telling of his character and shows that he learned he can’t play with time like that anymore. he has grown from the time lord victorious mindset and is more curious and genuinely excited. i kept thinking his doctor is so bright eyed and bushy tailed

Interestingly I had a different take away from that scene. To me, it felt less like him deciding not to play with time, and more like him realising that he’s not sure if *he* wants to know the truth of his own parentage. It felt like this moment of him seeing that he could solve this mystery for his companion, then realising that, if the tables were turned, he wouldn’t want someone to tell him where he’s from.
I don’t know, that’s just my interpretation, and whatever the truth ends up being, I still really liked the moment.

Also the moment from The Pilot where Capaldi goes back in time to get Bill some pictures of her Mother. He's done things like that before, but it's far more bittersweet to see him make an internal judgement and be responsible in the way that 15 was in this episode.

Same here, I definitely think he was contemplating going after her, and if that was a younger version of himself there like 10 or 11 he probably would have. But it was clear to me in that moment he’s obviously learnt his lesson and is now more stricter with himself on things like that

My read on the doctor not running after Ruby's (preumed) mother was just contemplating the consequences of meddling in this and deciding it was better left alone, personally? Ncuti seemed to have a pretty torn expression during these scenes. Perhaps just concern that talking to the mother may change the events he quite literally just slayed the goblin king to protect.

it truly shows his growth as a being as well! in the past, i could picture 9, 10, 11, and even 12 to immediately interact with ruby’s mother! but due to his experiences that have happened between 13 and 14(ESPECIALLY), he has finally realized and understood that, yes he is very powerful but instead of acting on a whim and using said power, sometimes he must take a step back.

Argue the Goblins "feasting on Coincidence" is a function of the plot to further the connections between The Doctor and Ruby in a manner visible to the audience (The whole scene setting up the Crack in the Sunday Family flat having them list more coincidences between Ruby, Lulu, and The Doctor as the storm outside grows more violent, leading to the coincidences being so strong that it empowers the Goblins to be able to tear through time to get to Baby Ruby), so the Goblins lacking much character is to service the connections between Ruby and The Doctor imho which I feel giving The Goblins a lot of character focus may detract from that element.
As for The Doctor killing the Goblins...to be fair, he did give them a chance to flee (and thought they did flee at first before realizing what they actually did). So they did break his "second chance" rule, he gave them the opportunity to flee, they were given the mechanical method to flee, but instead they used it to go back in time and eat Ruby.
So, while violent, it *is* following the established rules of engagement The Doctor follows for new creatures/enemies he encounters.

    • @Alovon
      @Alovon 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +25

And on the note of the gloves. Kinda think they may be a one-off? They seemed to be shorting out when The Doctor seemingly pushed them to the limit at the end there (He did say only 3% power left after they fled the Goblin Ship). So, he probably burnt them out by using them to pull the Goblin Ship down on the Church. But Davies could prove me wrong there and have them show up again/him getting a new pair/fixing them.

    • @zocialix
      @zocialix 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

That's my reading as well. The Goblins are more akin to the role of Weevil's from Torchwood, which in Everything Changes also written by Russell T. Davies are used to demonstrate how aliens are traveling through space-time through the rift ending up in Cardiff. Now it's creatures of myth and legend manifesting in reality itself cause the barriers of the universe's rules have been lifted, which in a way functions as the new rift for this era on a grander scale that'll be the running theme that binds the spin-offs same way as the rift binded Torchwood to Doctor Who as well as Sarah Jane Adventures. Goblins aren't really schemers of anything they've just been washed up into this reality for whatever reason.
The plot of Church on Ruby Road is the coincidences surrounding Ruby and The Doctor which have arisen as a result of myth in addition to magic becoming intertwined. With The Doctor having to relearn what he thought he knew regards to logic or physics in combination with him no longer knowing where he's actually from - having that shared aspect of being an orphan with Ruby Sunday. Also coincidentally Ruby's not the only orphan who'll hang around this incarnation of The Doctor we've seen him with Mel too, so on top of everything else we appear to have a running theme of orphans finding company among each-other.

So, it's less a case of people avidly tuning in, than one of the Speech just happening to be on the TV by default. I'll bet that many will have taken the opportunity to have toilet/tea-break while the King was on; that's certainly what we did in hour household.

Ruby doesn't really react realistically to the situation she's in - when she first sees the goblins she acts like she's just seen something completely normal like a cat "did you just hiss at me" - is her first reaction. Then she immediately just jumps into the Tardis. If you compare this to how rose first reacted to the doctor/tardis, she was terrified and immediately tries to run away - as someone realistically would. She doesn't believe what she's seeing initially dismissing the autons as kids dressed up - the idea of aliens is just lunacy to her. In the second episode she questions her decision to go with the doctor and gets very overwhelmed and frightened. Ruby feels completely unrealistic atm.

while i dont hate them, and i think they make sense considering how many times the doctor has had to hold on for his life, i can sorta get why here. they just look cheap, without looking like an actual gizmo but just wool gloves with led lights underneath. its nice, its easy to cosplay, especially for kids which i think is extra nice. but visual-wise its just gloves, and its reasonable that not everyone would like that. compare that to some of the stuff 10 was whipping up, or 12 with his 2Dis.
and to add onto that, those gizmos were devices specifically created for the current adventure/mission they were on. ie. im seeing people using the thing that goes ding as an example, but even in the context of that special it was specifically created to detect zygons, which was 10's current adventure, and also why it was a one-time thing.
and while he did mention the psychic paper, i feel like that worked better as it isn't just a one-off for a general specific situation, but a tool that was like the sonic that was both supposed to intentionally blend in normally and is extremely useful for tons of situations, like infiltrating, keeping a low-profile, or receiving distress calls. it's like a detective-tool, though it is still admittedly a very huge exception.
so im guessing that people want gizmo-looking-gizmo's that were built to benefit the current adventure overall rather than cheap props that benefit a general situation. which i'd like to see as well, but im not bothered by the lack of it.

@@BEE-oz7yd well when he says he wants to use his intelligence to save the day, im *guessing* he means being in-the-moment problem solving or crafty, something we can see on-camera rather than using something that was pre-made off-camera? like 12's 2dis, or 10's management in voyage of the damned.
even in rose where this exact thing happened (anti-plastic, although that was a thing he got specifically for this situation), we still saw the doctor's intelligence with him using the plastic head, or just investigating the autons in general.
or in the empty child two-parter, we see him doing lots of detective-work (albeit intentionally shabby-work) with him solving the chula ship & the nanogenes, while also solving the case of who the empty child's mother was, which in result also displays him using his intelligence to save the day.
although it is a strange thing for him to say when the doctor has used a gadget to solve things plenty of times pre-gatwa, in the context he's talking about.
but to reply to your comment, it's less that making gizmo's doesn't show off his intelligence but speeches do, but moreso in-the-moment problem-solving that displays the doctor's intelligence. anyone can write a character who can whip up a gadget, but it doesn't make us buy that they're smart. them being smart and clever, active problem-solving, makes them feel smart, y'know?

@@eye-chan1711 I can understand that. From what I've heard of her, Romana does seem like the kind of person to play up a role, especially if it's related to the Doctor.
Imagine, if the Doctor can be attracted to Ruby by a string of coincidences and bad luck, then why couldn't _another_ Time Lord be drawn to her as well? Maybe she sets herself up as "that weird old lady next-door" to watch over Ruby and keep an eye out for the Doctor in case he comes along and occasionally entertains herself by needling her neighbours and stirring up drama.
Whilst I'm not saying it's at all _likely,_ it allow for the Doctor, in the wake of Gallifrey's destruction and the revelation of the Timeless Child, to have a Time Lord he can reconnect with and confide in. Because the Master killed everyone on Gallifrey, the Doctor hasn't had the chance to get some closure, similar to what the 11th Doctor wanted with the Time Lords he thought were on House in 'The Doctor's Wife'. I think he needs someone that's _truly_ his equal to talk things through with, and Romana would be the perfect candidate.

First the goblins act like gremlins, creating more trouble on Ruby's b-day to create more coincidences and bad luck for a tastier baby for the Goblin King, then suddenly... none of that matters, they just go back in time and snatch Ruby as a baby instead of the current newborn. (could've done that in the first place, d-uh!) And oh, did granny get her tea? I was in such suspense that she might not... no, I didn't care and it wasn't that funny because even though there's gremlins and goblins all through this episode, supposedly wreaking havoc and even killing people, none of them, not one goblin was able to prevent Granny from getting her tea. Why the heck do you have so many goblins if they can't even accomplish that? There were too many plot holes to think about. When this episode started I thought for a second, "are they rehashing the 'Rose' episode?" Ruby/Rose? Rose-->Ruby (coincidence?: No.) At the end, I thought "I wish they just re-hashed the 'Rose' episode" it would have been a better start... Honestly, I have never liked any of the Doctors on their debut show. It always takes me a few episodes to get to like any of them, but man.. I don't know if bringing back Russell T. I enjoyed this episode a lot and like in all realness I have had one of the worst Christmases ever. I was working Xmas day and also while most people get chocolate or booze or pyjamas or fuzzy socks for Christmas, the big man in the red suit gave me a throat infection so this episodes really cheered me up and gave me a boost.

I enjoyed it. It has left me feeling optimistic for the future of the series. Just a few comments though:
They missed a golden opportunity to actually kill Davina McCall,
The gloves were introduced simply to use the word "mavity" again,
Obviously the Doctor couldn't find out who Ruby's mother was because it would affect her whole timeline and we'd only just seen what her absence from her adoptive family would do.
Mrs Flood is Ruby's real mother and not necessarily human.
Those are my thoughts. It left me feeling good.

What I disliked most about this episode (or better the companion) was her being sassy or witty but not very active. She's up there on the roof, and the goblin hisses at her... and what does she do? Sass the goblin instead of going after the baby. I mean... they were tying the basket up and she just stood there being sassy and in the last moment she realised she should take the baby from them... 🤷‍♀️

i feel like the 15th doctor has kinda been set up to fail in a way
hes been introduced at the tail end of a series of specials starring david tennant again, and was kinda set up as a "secondary doctor" for him, so its kinda hard to get attached when compared to the single most popular doctor on the planet
plus hes been given the objective worst sonic screwdriver, and has had by far the most controversial introduction as a character, not just for how ncuti looks (which isnt really a factor for most people but you know there are at least a few) but also because the way he was integrated into the story as this big event that very harshly divided fans
on top of that, the rebranding for this to be "season one" has harshly divided fans and has been generally deemed to be somewhat unnecessary kinda divides him from the rest of the cast and makes it seem like disney want this to be "their doctor", rather than holding to the legacy set by all the other doctors
(plus the numbering mess caused by the whole timeless child thing and also the bigeneration meaning that two doctors exist at once so they're both the 14th doctor??????)

I didn’t mind the gloves initially, when they were just transferring mass into the glove, but I didn’t like the fact that suddenly they could make you heavier, since that contradicted the initial premise from ten minutes earlier, that they don’t change mass, just transferred it.

  • @shmikex
    @shmikex 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

I didn't mind the gloves. Why wouldn't the Doctor have a one off gadget? It's like the machines that go ding.
I'm also not a fan of the sonic "screwdriver". I'm all for the Doctor having different sonic utilities, like the sonic sunglasses, but this is more of a sonic remote or sonic controller and IMO should be referred to as such.
One thing I noticed from the trailers which is just a tad jarring is the Doctor continously changing his look based on the time period. While I'd have no issue with companions doing that, having the Doctor deviate from their signature looks (or clothing in a similar style to it) is unfortunate.

My biggest fear coming out of this episode is that they're going to pull a Rose with Ruby, where Rose only went with the Doctor after she found out he could travel in time as well as space and wanted to go see Pete and meet/save him, I dread that Ruby only decided to run to the Doctor when she deduced he can travel in time and wants to meet her parent(s).

As much as I like your reviews, I'm going to heavily disagree with your take on the gloves.
These feel for me like a return to older, wiser and high brain-powered doctors who used their ingenuity to answer problems with their minds, not a sonic screwdriver. It reminds me of the 12th Doctor making up gadgets on the fly, as opposed to other doctors who might have used the Sonic screwdriver as an all-purpose gadget.
I would love it if RTD would commit to that aspect for the 15th Doctor, who sounds already promising.

Absolutely agreed on the Goblin Song. I don't mind a music number as long as it fits in the plot and doesn't feel forced. The Master or toymaker doing this sort of thing just to taunt the doctor makes perfect sense but the doctor and ruby just casually playing along like it's a game doesn't work. Also, the vocals of the song, while great, really don't sound like they're coming from the goblins at all? I'd have expected raspy, strange voices like during the abduction scene where one of them says "happy birthday" over the babyphone.

I really liked the gloves and I'll tell you why... Unlike most of the things that they do on Doctor Who that appear to be cash grabs for toys, they look like mittens that any kid would wear. So the first thing I thought when I saw them was that there's going to be a bunch of kids outside playing like they're Doctor Who, wearing their mittens. Because it's such a simple "toy" that they all already have. I thought it was kind of a gift to parents from RTD. (My kids are grown now. But it's funny how you think like this anyway, even though they're over 20.)
And I hope they were doing that- And I hope the kids who never saw representation of people that look like them before were doing it with excitement that *they* felt like they were part of Doctor Who now, too.
Edit: speech to text is not always very accurate. Cleaned up my text.

I felt the pacing was a bit off, but overall it was okay if not good. My issue so far is that we never really got a Ncuti focused post regeneration episode. Giggle was still a Tenant focused episode and Church on Ruby Road was more focused on introducing Ruby. I love Ncuti's portrayal and just wanted to see him transition into confidently being in the role. That's to say I'm still salty Jodie didn't just regenerate to him and he wasn't the Doctor for all of the 60th Anniversary (either him or Jodie should have lead the 60th with better writing; not a Tenant nostalgia bait). My other issue is just my concern with RTD being back in general. This episode felt a LOT like the series one opener Rose and Ruby feels a lot like Rose. It's too early to tell, but I just worry about Ncuti's era feeling like a tiresome repeat. Aside from Giggle, the specials left a lot to be desired. I'm just worried (possibly overly) because Ncuti is the most excited I've ever been for a new Doctor (Peter Capaldi is still my favorite, but he grew on me; Ncuti immediately stole my heart and I really want him to become my second favorite at least).

I think thats the makn problem with this Doctor, he has no more baggage. No more trauma, no more issues to fix. Technically hes a complete character. There's not much to be done to develop him anymore.
Its like later series of sitcoms where the developed characters become either boring or parodies of their former selves, because the negative traits that gave us laughs are all gone.
Same goes for Ruby, genuinely, she seems like a pretty stable character. Despite being a foundling, she has a loving supporting family, a secure and fun friend group, hobbies she enjoys, even after getting the phone call from Davina she doesn't really care too long about hwr parents not being found because she is well loved and cared for. She has everything she wants, so why does she go travel with the Doctor. What are her motives, what does the character want, and what does the character need.

The author of the article described the devuce of having a character being interviewed as a worn out and hackneyed way of delivering exposition. It had, even back then, become the ultimate violation of the "show don't tell" rule of scriptwriting.
