    I'm in audit. Now I'm chowing antidepressants 😂😂😂 Everything you said is true. Also the lack of creativity & mechanical nature of it is daunting, you often wonder, am I really learning anything new here? I should say however due to mandatory audit firm rotation & improved software, the hours are still long but I think trainees will get to design procedures (more like, select them from the firm's predetermined methodology).
    The toxicity is a lot. Especially during lockdown. There is this underlying suspicision that people are not working, so managers put trainees on edge, they will insist on having more meetings, random calls to "check up" on you... which actually takes away from the opportunity to apply yourself during the day. Which is why, in order to meet the deadline, you'll find yourself working at night. This is the time when no one is breathing down your neck.
    The hours, yoh haike. Now I see why they had 6 hour exams in CTA. That's your life every busy season.
    Finally, the work, especially in first year, is just not interesting. It can get better in late second year when you are trusted with stuff that requires judgement, research and meetings... instead of tick n bash.
    It also depends on who is the manager. Some firm's do invest in technology to automate the tick n bash or avoid it as much as possible, but some managers are.... like dinosaurs. They will insist on applying the same old manual strategy because they don't want to learn anything new unless they have to. Some are.... not efficient. They will add data capturing to a task, almost as if they think you will phantom tick.
    Toxicity is almost unavoidable. The client is charged per hour of each team member and the structure is very hierarchical. It's built within the business model of Audit. See at banks & companies, you are measured by output & deadlines. You may be rewarded for being efficient. In audit, they are selling your time. So managers have to know what you did with 40 hours in the week and invoice the client for that, as a result, even if you work efficiently and finish quickly, there is no I'm done I'm leaving. There will always be something else to fill up your time because they have budgeted for that revenue. And since we are not robots, we can't sit and be productive for 4 hours straight, take a break then sit for another 4 hours... There will additional time that you spend to make up the idle time. There are also demonic managers who will bring deadlines forward and talk to you leftside for not meeting the ridiculous targets.

    Did you mention the TOXICITY? gosh it's bad. The feeling of never switching off. Managers calling you on leave. The monotonous way of doing things. The constant distrust of trainees. Verbal abuse. Again did we mention TOXICITY?

    I think the points raised are somewhat biased or one sided. To balance it out perhaps chat about why trainees would like to stay on audit?
    Also, i think it’s also worth noting that being in audit post articles is a very different experience to audit during articles.

      Hi Litha, are you in audit? From what I've seen, managers are struggling to balance. They work even more hours. You clear your emails at 12 and go to bed, you'll wake up in the morning to find an email from manager or partner at 2 am. Or sunday night.... like it's BAD

    Do all trainees have the option to stay at an audit firm after completing articles or do audit firms have to offer you a position?

    • @NtwanieNgomane
      @NtwanieNgomane  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So audit firms normally offer trainees to stay on but it's only for a limited number of people, we all apply and they choose those they want

    What else can a person do in the 3 years of training apart from audit?

    • @user-mq3ts7lr9l
      @user-mq3ts7lr9l 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There is banking. People love FirstRand & Investec. But of course there is Nedbank, Absa etc They normally pick their people in undergrad.
      There is consulting (Strategy & Finance). These are the McKinsey, Bain & BCG.
      The above are closer to Management Accounting & Finance and might have no tax, depending on the training plans. They also tend to be competitive, so you must know your story.
      Then there is good ole accounting. Various private companies offer these abo MTN, Shoprite then there is private sector:
      SARS
      National Treasury
      Reserve Bank
      Transnet
      Then the rest.

    How about changing from audit to forensic Accounting is it possible...Can you become a forensic accountant without passing through those audit trainning...can you sign up as a forensic Accountant at big 4

    • @user-mq3ts7lr9l
      @user-mq3ts7lr9l 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Forensics is seen as a specialised practice for CA's. There are also a lot of IT people there, so it is not seen as a training ground for Accountants. It is seen as something an already qualified accountant would want to specialise in. The big 4 offer contracts in audit, not their advisory or forensics departments. You can apply to go there when you finish articles.
      Now you might, by accident (or connections) , get a stint at forensics during your training contract. I say accident because it would not necessarily mean they want a trainee for the accounting, it would probably be because they need someone to do admin for a month or so.
      Why? well because maybe the fraud they are investigating involves lots of documents and they need them to be organised.
      This would then be your opportunity to at least know two people from forensics so you can knock there towards the end of your audit contract.
