  • In this video, our audiologist Emma busts the myth that your hearing will get worse if you don't wear hearing aids. She explains how research has shown how hearing aids help stimulate the brain and support social connection, but do not cause your hearing to improve, get worse or stay the same.

You said it can prevent dementia, but will deciding not to wear hearing aids cause dementia?
And have hearing aids proven to be always improve socialization for hard of hearing people no matter the type of hearing loss?

Your risks for dementia increase by almost 2X with mild hearing loss, 3X for moderate hearing loss, and just under 5X for severe hearing loss if left untreated. So it isn't that you Will get dementia, but you are at significantly increased risk. Hearing aids can improve socialisation, but it does depend on the severity of your hearing loss as well as your signal-to-noise ratio loss. Typically people who wait too long tend to have less success in functioning in these environments.

Is there also a risk of dementia for people suffering severe unilateral hearing loss?

I think the ability to have conversation might be a factor, if you can still understand conversations than it will be a big help. You won’t withdrawal, you won’t shut off from the world.
