Tragic that Hyundai are discontinuing this car. It seems a complete injustice that one of the most efficient EVs should be continued to make way for a massive SUV like the IOniq5. Hyundai should be keeping this car and improving on it and making it cheaper, not dumping it.

    • @benjaminsmith2287

It's all about sales. The Ioniq 5 will sell a lot better and it's a more upscale car. I agree with you though. Tired of SUVs everywhere but it does make business sense to keep bringing more and more of them out.

      @@benjaminsmith2287 Hi there :)
I am happy to see you supporting a lot of questions on TH-cam regarding ev choices and and other questions. I’ve seen your comments under a lot of videos 😊👌🏻
I asked you for advice before regarding my choice between id4 and tm3. At the time I had not done any research on Hyundai and I came across the ioniq 5 😍 what a fantastic car that is though.
At the time we spoke I really did not know what I wanted but now I do. I like a car that is a bit more spacious inside the cabin and I like also the comfort more than sportiness and when I test drive the i5 it was phenomenal 👍🏻👍🏻
So I have decided on that car…
However, in Sweden we only have the 72 battery and the delivery of the car takes a long time. Because of the long wait, I actually bought the ioniq electric 28 until the i5 gets the 77 battery here in Sweden and the wait isn’t too long. It is a bit thirstier so I’d want the bigger battery.
As for this review in this newer ioniq electric 38 battery, he actually say that it is quiet while driving… have they made changes with isolation so that tire noise aren’t transferred into the cabin?
That is my only complaint with my 2018 ioniq. It is very loud unfortunately.

There probably will come a new one in the Ioniq line-up to replace this vehicle. Although strange that Kia is continuing with the Niro EV since it is build on the same platform.

The old Ioniq electric actually charges a lot faster. Charging to 80% using a 100kW DC charger usually takes 15-20 minutes. It has 40 miles or so less range though.

Great review on this, it makes for a pretty compelling virtual test drive. I personally love hatchback life, there's so much space when you need it. The Ioniq also looks pretty good imo especially for an electric & overall sounds like a fantastic commuter car to get around comfortably & efficiently. Honestly reminds me of my first Honda Civic EX I bought used in terms of comfortable, efficient & quality, but this time electric. You could drive it like you stole it for a little harmless fun but it was never powerful enough to be too dangerous, and it never failed to get me from A to B.

The Kona tends to steal the thunder of the Ioniq due to its bigger battery pack and subsequently, longer range.
However for most people, the Ioniq EV with its new upgraded pack is far more than enough for majority of daily commutes.

We just got our Ioniq EV 3 weeks ago. We prefer the height of a SUV to a sedan, but that Kona is not real SUV, its actually tiny and has less storage and leg room than the Ioniq, but people I guess aren't aware just how much more the ionic offers over the Kona.......other than the added range the Kona provides.....every other aspect we felt the Ioniq has the upper hand, including price.

I had my 20 ioniq ev a couple months and it's a beautiful car only problem I'm having is 12 volt battery running down, slight wind noise on highway, I average 230 miles each charge not 170,,I had a17 ioniq hybrid that car was the best 700 miles to a tank on highway can leave it on all day running barely Burns any fuel, wish I got another one, but I got my ev for half price fully loaded so I'm good, got a new 12 volt and I'm curious why don't they put an alternator on electric cars I mean it doesn't have to run constantly only when the car is moving to charge up the batteries and it's not that hard to do so I don't know

Great review! I own this car here in Korea. It was interesting to see the few little changes from the Korean spec. I also have the top-of-the-line version but the trims are different from the USA. For example, I have vented seats, a heated steering wheel, and a air cleaning filter (a button in place of your fresh air button). Yours has vents for the rear passengers, memory seating, and a sunroof. I don't have the driving assist, that would have been a slightly expensive option. And my reverse noise is different! It's less of a beep than a low chime, and other new Hyundai's here in Korea share the same sound. I've never driven as fast as you... too much traffic here! :-) I'm a little surprised at your low range. I usually charge my car to 80% and the range has shown up to 339 km (210 miles) depending on temperature. Did you have a destination inputted into the navigation? That will lower the shown range if there are hills or freeways. 96% should have many more miles than you show, especially since it's not winter yet. Cheers ~

At 9:00 you state it can not come to complete stop on regeneration and need to apply foot brake for last bit. Thats not the case. It uses regen all the way but you need to know how and its not intuitive or advertised properly by Hyundai. Basically you need to use the left paddle shifter instead of brake pedal to use regeneration braking instead. you have to hold the left paddle down completely and it will brake like you would if you were hitting foot brake, all the way to complete stop. If you use that paddle shifter to less than 3 miles per hour it will automatically drive it to stop at zero. plus it will hold the car there until you press accelerator, without needing you to step foot on brake at all. Its quite fantastic actually. I only found out because I read the entire manual front to back :)

    • @ClarkyAv
      @ClarkyAv 3 ปีที่แล้ว

It's cheaper to run all the auxiliary systems from a 12V circuit than to redesign everything to run from the higher voltage main battery pack. As manufacturers already know how to do 12V systems, they stick with the 12V battery and manage its state of charge from the main battery pack.

Seems superfluous now....as Hyundai are discontinuing THIS Ioniq model (and its variants) as of 2022....but for anybody looking to buy one in the "used" marketplace, I recommend watching Topher's reviews of ALL the three variants, namely the Hybrid, the Plug-In-Hybrid and the All Electric. Even though three different power-trains are being reviewed, there are enough similarities across the board to get a much better idea of how this car "generally" drives, handles accelerates etc. Topher's more restrained in his praise of the "Hybrid" (for example) but appears to be a bit more gushing about the "Plug-In" and the "All Electric" I think it was just the mood he was in on each given day...lol...but each variant is essentially the SAME car (battery weights and location notwithstanding etc..) so its worth watching ALL THREE reviews.....especially if you're here merely because you're curious about the "Hybrid" variant!!

0:46 "And we have a battery that can charge quite a bit faster." Incorrect, the charge speed in the new model is SUBSTANTIALLY WORSE than the outgoing model. Bjørn Nyland drove both the old and new Ioniqs 1,000km, and accomplished the feat 2 hours faster in the old model.

I can confirm this as well - I own a 2016 Ioniq electric and have borrowed a 2020 over a long weekend. The 2016 is actually better for going long distance as it rapid charges much faster.

Not very practical for anyone who lives outside the city limits especially with 170 mi range you add in really cold weather and you're probably going to be getting 150 mi range if you're lucky.

Could be that he uses Apple car play or Android Auto, that requiers the Phone to be plugged in with a cable. The only letdown of the 2020 Ioniq is the charging speed or lack therof. The Classic Ioniq charges much faster and can actually travel faster on long trips..

It has laggy acceleration, slower charging times, and a much more stiff ride. They're different vehicles, but with the Chevy's reliability record, I'd go with the Hyundai, which says a lot, I don't love this car.
