  • Number 62 of "365 Days of Plants" is a succulent formerly in the "Senecio" genus, but is now considered Kleinia and is a stunning plant commonly known as "Scarlet Kleinia" or "Coral Senecio". I particularly love the grey-green foliage and the red pom pom flowers.
In this video I go over some basic care tips including where this plant grows natively, where I'm growing it in my home, propagation, watering, lighting and more.
You can check out more of these videos here and on my IGTV @homesteadbrooklyn.

Once again loving this plant, I have never seen it in any of my plant shops or nurseries, or even big box stores, but I can say if I ever run into one I will surely pick it up. Thanks again Summer loving this series.

I rescued a tiny succulent that was half dead from lack of watering for 50p from where he was sitting by the till in a local shop.
With plenty of light and nurture it thrived and grew and grew and is now a massive Scarlet Kleinia, it currently has several huge orange Pom Pom flowers and looks like something from the Jurassic era! It’s absolutely incredible and I’m so grateful I saved it.

I have mine on my northfacing balkony. It does really good on it. I get a flower every year. So shade is also good. It survived 5 years, lost all its leaves to parasites last winter but popped right back, so its really sturdy. Mine grows a bit "bushier" than showed here in the video

I bought one cheap second hand and I absolutely love it! It seems to grow slow, and it has been really beautiful, but this christmas I almost killed it. It has widened its stems and is shooting desperately from it. Do you know if it can be gut down, or how I can try to save it or make it a little prettier? The tips are still fine, but it's looking like it got a beating (which it sort of did, my poor baby) GREAT video! So hard to find videos about this beauty, even the name has been a pain to find. Is it Kleinia Fulgens or Senecio Cephalophorus?

I have a philosophical question that might be good for a discussion; Surviving vs. Thriving, when to let go. I have a Gibbeaum Dispar that was horribly sunburned, it did grow new leaves in the spring, but they are much smaller and weaker, it doesn't look the best, but it's clinging to life desperately by it's little fuzzy fingernails. It's trying so hard, but I just don't know if I can provide for it what it needs. It's easy to get attached to plants and I would feel guilty for not giving the underdog a chance, but at the same time I live in a small apartment and space is limited. Do you compost a struggling plant to make way for something that might do better in the same conditions?

Great topic! I have thought a lot about this same thing lately and went through my plants and composted about 3 or 4 of them for soil for new plants. I realized I needed to stop buying plants I just like a lot and only buying plants I know I can provide the right environment for, which is hard to do becuase I love every succulent but just dont have enough space and light for more then I already have.

I re-homed mine with visitation rights to a friend who has a southwest facing window that is like a death ray from outer space. Us cranky old plant guys are also upset they renamed our namesake plant. Senecio & proud!💪👴

I had a question for you about fertilizing. When you use earth worm castings, do you still fertilize with like your organic or synthetic fertilizer when you water, too? If so, do you do it less or the same as you normally would?

Do you need to cut off spent flowers? Mine is flowering at the moment but I'm not sure whether I need to deadhead it or not.

My plant’s leaves and stems are starting to show a bunch of tiny black dots. They do not rub off and I can’t see any type of insects on the plant. Any suggestions??

Very nice. Could this possibly be Kleinia galpinii? Kleinia fulgens and galpinii appear to often confused because the flowers have the same color. I can't find a comparison of the two species online. The Kew specimen of the former has coarsely dentate leaves while the latter has entire leaves. See www.plantsoftheworldonline.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:227384-1 and www.plantsoftheworldonline.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:227385-1
