Is my APX NEXT XE still just a paperweight? Can I program it with CPS? Do I have a headache?

- First off, I’m a radio aficionado, not a professional. While I’ve been a firefighter and SAR operator in the past, I’m really just in this for the fun of exploring fascinating radios. Please feel free to add to this with your own stories, and I welcome constructive feedback.
Join me as I share my challenges with programming a APX NEXT XE with CPS rather than Radio Central, Motorola’s cloud based programming software.
Short version: 1) be absolutely certain it’s not a stolen radio. 2) if you want to program with CPS, make sure the radio has firmware version R4.22 or higher. If not, unless you have permission of the entity on whose account it was allocated, you’ve just bought a VERY expensive paperweight. 3) just buy one of these from your Motorola dealer and save the headache.
Note: I have an account with Motorola which allows me to use their programming software. I am following all state, federal and local laws.

Hi there, I appreciate that you think I’m qualified to offer advice on your situation but I’m just a hobbiest. I encourage you to contact your local Motorola dealer, the APX Facebook group, or Radio Reference. I make videos about what I understand and don’t pretend to be an expert. Sorry.
Did your Next arrive with forced narrowband restriction or were you able to get wideband enabled?
No, I was able to perform a top-down copy from my APX8000 code plug right into the NXT code plug and it took my wide band frequencies just fine.

Careful, some dreams turn to nightmares. Someday I’ll do a video on why I no longer have the NXT, but for now I’m going to let the investigation run it’s course. Yeah, that might be a little foreshadowing.
You're suggesting buying directly from Motorola. I haven't found a dealer willing to sell me one. They all say Motorola only allows them to sell to Public Safety organizations. Do you know of any dealers that would sell me one without requiring Public Safety status?
Sorry, I totally see where you’re coming from. There is an element of liability if I encourage everybody to buy radios off eBay or other random sites, and so I always direct people back to the legitimate sources . The challenges I had with the next are clear example of why buying secondhand is risky. But to answer your question, I’m really sorry, but I don’t. There are occasionally opportunities to buy them on eBay and other sites, but what I have found is getting to know a Motorola tech is quite helpful as well.
Actually you would need to not only have 4.22 but you would also have to initially turn on the ability to use the radio in cps and radio central in the radio central software.

Can the APX next be Used For ham radio.
Should be able to connect to the UHF and VHF bands on ham
Yes, I verified that it works on but VHF and UHF, but not 220 or 900 mhz.
@@AdventureCruiser you're probably better off getting a amateur radio, some are multiband capable of VHF, UHF along with 220 and 900, the only thing that sucks about them is the lack of the P25 codec to listen to public safety
How can I buy direct from Motorola? How do I find a dealer?
I did a Google search for Motorola dealers and was directed to Day Wireless in my area. Make sure they are an APX dealer not just MotoTRBO

@@AdventureCruiser for some reason my replies don't show up, but I Highly recommend you look at the quansheng uv-k5 and the custom firmwares with messaging and CB reception
