    This is a great video! It’s great to see our current commercial fishermen out making a living, it’s such a big part of Ontario’s small town history and culture that gets ignored to often unfortunately

    I am amazed at all the negative comments here. Commercial fishing is regulated. They aren’t going to over harvest. I’ll bet most of the negative comment writers are the first ones to drove an hour to buy a perch dinner at a the Erie Beach in Port Dover. So you guys are telling me you never eat fish? Are you all vegetarians? How do you think that haddock or halibut got into the grocery store freezer? How did your favourite restaurant get that plate of calamari? They were all harvested by fishermen. If you want to complain then look towards the Chinese fishing trawlers that don’t follow regs.

      Not too long ago ohio sport fisherman and commercial fisherman easily shared the same waters with all being successful. It was that way for years until recently. I think some of it is contributed to the record walleye population but either way I hope it bounces back with the help of regulations whatever that may be

    Yes they are making a living, BUT, a lot more people make a living off perch fisherman. In Ohio our DNR by far favors the perch netters over sport fishing. They just increased the amount the netters are allowed to keep and the sports fisherman is lucky to catch a handful. In the future when their are no perch the DNR will come up with some phony baloney excuses why and not one of them will be the netters.

    • @BBBYpsi
      @BBBYpsi 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In the Michigan waters we never had a problem getting our 50 man limit per person. Since they have upped the limit both in Ohio & Canadian waters for perch the sports fishing for perch in 2019 has been pretty much non existant along with the huge number of walleyes out there now eating the perch. They need to cut way back on the commercial perch for both Ohio & Canada & Ohio needs to do something about the algae bloom. It is killing the lake.

    • @mcriser

  • @dwetick1

    100 lb boxes (less ice) is standard measure for Lake Erie catch. Some things you may not know: The perch has to be alive in the net or is discarded. Occasionally, all the fish in the net are discarded, because a current reversal killed them all. Many other fish are caught in a gillnet, sm bass, sheepheads, white perch & white bass...and occasionally a sturgeon too. These are discarded if there is no market...dead or alive.

    • @barrypigeon6211

      You really come off as someone who has no experience in the industry, you read a few things, had a few sport-fishing buddies tell you stories and then except it as truth. "Some things you may not know: The perch has to be alive in the net or is discarded. Occasionally, all the fish in the net are discarded, because a current reversal killed them all" What were you toking when you came up with this bullshit?

  • @plinn2112

    Why is sport harvest so much preferred over commercial harvest? Our restaurants and grocers need perch too to feed people who want to eat it. It is always more economical to purchase fish at a grocery store than to catch them by hook and line (though admittedly not as fun). I agree that the resource needs management, but some people seem to have the attitude that only hook and line fishing matters.

      @ Dominic.... Totally agree.... over here in Pennsylvania gill nets were banned in Lake Erie but the commercial netters are placing large box nets in our prime spots (because it's their right to make a profit) which us anglers are not allowed to enter. They make the money and we pay through the nose for the "privilege" to fish for the "left overs". Corporate greed has taken over every nook and cranny of our lives.

      @@GrahamWhatmough I'm just now starting to research commercial fishing, but to say government agencies are overseeing things gives me NO confidence that things are being done right. Government agencies have been mismanaging things for centuries. As sport fishermen, we do spend a lot of money on licensing to maintain the habitat. I wonder the ratio of license dollars sport to commercial and the harvest ratio. I do know Lake Erie sport fishing isn't what it was 4 decades ago and wonder what the main contributing factors are.
