It’s all about the music - however you make it! Play it, sing it, whistle it, hum it - but most of all enjoy it! :-)
‘Upon This Shore’ - new version of my original song (SOTU 662)
x
All parts written, arranged and played by me, Del Griffiths.
The tempo here is deliberately slow to match the sound clip of a breaking wave, which is repeated throughout the song - so if it’s too slow for your liking, blame nature! ;-)
Closing video clip is of Greatstone beach, near New Romney, Kent, England.
My original version of this song can be found here:

Lyrics
‘Upon This Shore’ by Del Griffiths
The waves come crashing in
And I can breathe again
Is this the place I knew
Is this where I found you
The moon is bright above
But where are you my love
I know you won’t be here
But I still feel you near
The sand beneath my feet
The air still tastes so sweet
I’ll stand and watch the sea
And dream you’re here with me
You went away
You grew away from me
And now I see
Those days have gone forever
We cannot be together
But still I’ll wait some more
Alone upon this shore
You went away
You grew away from me
And now I see
But still I’ll wait some more
Alone upon this shore
All parts written, arranged and played by me, Del Griffiths.

another poetic and beautiful song of loss and longing mate. the idea to alter the tempo in time w/ the rolling of the waves was an inspired one. lush and warm sounds in your arrangement and mix and the drum track is really effective. wonderful all round, brother. xo
I think my feet are getting wet...but it's a lovely song Del, glad you dug it out and gave it another performance.
Nice. 🙂
I admire you incorporating EWI to your guitar. I hope you upload more videos like this. I just purchase my carry-on EWI on Amazon and checking reviews and videos. I bumped into your upload and was delighted. ❤
Thanks so much for listening and commenting! I’ve really enjoyed playing the Carry-On wind instrument - easy to play, really great value, sounds pretty good, and adds a bit of visual interest to my vids too. Have fun with yours! Thanks again! :-)
Breathtakingly beautiful and so heartbreaking. Thank you, Linda and Del, for sharing this emotional tearful rendition. 👏👏👏👏👏💔😢❤️🩹
Sorry for misspelling Lynda. 🫶
Thanks so much, Charldene - seems like an age ago we did this one. Really appreciate your lovely comment! :-)
AWESOME!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thanks, Charldene - I really enjoyed revisiting this for the open mic a month or two back. You’re very kind! :-)
A perfect performance!!! You brought a beautiful quality of your own self to this lovely song. Thank you for sharing your incredible rendition. 🌞
Thank you yet again, Charldene! This was new to me - not really my genre (or so I thought), but in the time it took me to learn it, I grew to really appreciate it. :-)
Awesome! 👏👏👏👏👏👏 I don't know the song or the band but what you performed was AMAZING and full of energy!!! Thanks for sharing it. 🌞
Thanks, Charldene - yes, loads of energy in this one - took me 3 days to recover! :-))
so desperately mournful and deeply affecting, mate.
Thanks for listening, matey! :-)
wow mate. incredible arranging and mixing. never heard the song til now, absolutely love the energy! catchy as all get out! brilliant work Del. xo
Thanks mate - really happy with this one! :-)
Oh, I remember this from the first time. A gorgeous song - with a sort of Forever Autumn feel to it. Beautifully done.
Thanks so much, Steve - that’s a comparison I’m very happy to accept! :-)
I think I must have missed this the first time around. Beautifully sad, Del. So delicately played and sung. Man, your harmonies are always soooo good. Just lovely. Thank you.
Thanks so much, Bob! :-)
This is to new to me. The production was amazing. That organ sound. The vocals. I liked that a lot. Really nice work, Del!
Thanks, Chris - much appreciated! :-)
Very cool, Del… Fun, bouncy tune! 👍
Cheers, Brian! :-)
An absolute belter, Del! Man...firstly, that's a brave song choice! I know the original and just the thought of tackling it would make me run a mile! I've never even tried to work out what he's singing so I can't say how close you got. Sounds right to me! Keeping away from the falsetto was a good move. You've managed to keep the energy of the song but made it much more listener-friendly. Really, really good!
Thanks, Bob - not sure if the decision to tackle this was fearless or brainless, but I’ve always loved the relentless energy of it, in spite of the lyrical confusion. Really appreciate your kind words - cheers matey! :-)
@@DelGriffiths You did a great job! Rowland's vocal style is amazing. Even on their best known songs I haven't a clue what he says! "Poor old Johnny Ray..." after that, place your bets! 🤣
Nice job.
Nice job.
Beautiful rendition, elegant and soulful!
Thanks for taking the leap Del. Beautifully sung and played, with excellent balance between the different tracks. I didn’t grow up listening to it either, we weee strictly a Bob Dylan household. But the line from one to the other is pretty short.
One of Kris's songs that I DO know ... great job, Del!
Like a lot of us this side of the pond, I've heard this song (Johnny Cash version) a million times. It's cool to hear a version from someone who has not known the song all their life. The arrangement was excellent. Nice and mellow. Your string part was sweet.
as powerful and graceful as when it was written. you really captured the feeling of the song Del. beautiful performance and arrangement mate. xo
Too Much Funnnnnnnnn!!! I never would in my wildest dreams would've predicted this cover. LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!! Made my day Del!
So much fun I nearly smiled!!! :-)) Thanks, Mel! :-)
Glad you covered this. Would have been a travesty if no one did this. A gentle and poignant take.
Wow! This sounds great! I like the behind the scenes look at your Garageband (Logic?) timeline. Also, I'm intrigued by that digital saxamaphone :)
Thanks so much, John! It's a Carry-on Digital Wind Instrument - has 10 of its own okay-ish internal sounds (using the trumpet sound here) or can be used as a Bluetooth MIDI controller - a lot of fun and not too pricey! :-)
Well done, Del - quite the epic production! “Pissing the night away” 😂
Thanks, Brian - gotta love those lyrics! :-))
Del's mojo unleashed!!! Good one Del!
Haha - thanks, matey! :-)
A terrific uke revival of a 90s tune we were all blasting on our car radios.
What a song! Thanks so much for your kind words - very much appreciated! :-)
oh yes yes YES!!! awesome fun and awesome big sound and arrangement. mix is unreal Del!
Thanks, Jon - sometimes everything just falls into place, possibly more by luck than judgement, but however it happened I’m really pleased with this one. And I’m very grateful for your kind words! :-)
I'm so glad someone brought this! Funny thing is that I sang it at an open mic a couple of days ago - it always goes down well with drunk people :) - and thought "oooh, yes, this would work". I just do it on uke and harmonica though... it's such a fun song and this was an entertaining arrangement. And obviously I'm singing along.
Thanks, Edwin - I had so much fun with this, and it turned out better than I ever dared to imagine! Glad you’re singing - that must mean you’re winning! ;-)
only just saw this brother!!! i remember you showed me the audio but i didn't realise you'd made a clip for it on the YT. absolutely love this Del, such a beautiful interpretation and arrangement of the song. i'm honoured, humbled and blessed mate, thank you so much. xo
Thank you, Jon! This is one of your very best writes - the lyrics and the music. It was a joy to work on, and I never tire of listening to it. Thank you, matey! :-)
Beautyful performance! Did you have that Klos for long? It sounds great.
Thanks so much, Mikel! I’ve had the Klos for a couple of months now - so pleased with it! Cheers, matey! :-)
yaasss🔥
Thank you - really appreciate it! :-)
Smooth. Love it🎉
Thanks so much! :-)
😭 aw this is so pretty-you sound lovely here Del. Absolutely beautiful.
Thanks, Mel - one of EJ’s most under-appreciated songs IMHO. :-)
OMG Fabbo!!! Are you gonna make a kids album!?-JK but this is awesome Del!!!!
Haha! Thanks, Mel - it took forever to get through it when I first wrote and recorded it a couple of years back - then even longer to add the element labels, numbers and symbols last week! Very glad I did it though! Thanks for your kindness - always appreciated! :-)
Wonderful rendition I dont suppose you could share the chords and and picking pattern please🙏
Thank you! :-) Chords: Verse Dm G C F Dm Bb C F Dm G C F Dm Bb A Dm Chorus D G D G D Bm Em A D Regarding the picking pattern, probably best to listen to what I'm doing in the vid? Have fun with it - it's a lovely song. Thanks again! :-)
@@DelGriffiths Thank you it’s much appreciated the early Jam stuff is lovely - Been trying English Rose - Thanks again 👍
Hey, many thanks for this video, I have a DH-200 and the tone is always a little late after putting the finger down. Does someone have any idea? There are already new condesators inside. thank u!
Thanks for watching - hope somebody out there can help with this! :-)
your voice on this is gentle and beautiful mate
Thanks Jon - you're very kind, matey!
I'm pretty unfamiliar with EJ,apart from his biggest hits. This is a new one to me. It's a good one, Del. Palm trees noted and appreciated! Thanks for this splendid cover.
Thanks, Sabine - great to have had the opportunity to try this one! :-)
So cool 🥲🤘
Thanks so much! :-)
Un t ema que me encanta y has interpretado con alta calidad, enhorabuena una vez más Del, ha sido genial, like 1
Muchas gracias, Jose! :-)
One of the all time great lyrics, your stripped back approach is the right one I reckon Del.
Thanks so much, Graham! Songwriting at its best with this one for sure! :-)
this song suits you so well mate, wonderfully done
Thanks so much, Jon - it’s a song I’ve always loved playing and singing! Cheers, matey! :-)
ha! ripper version Del!!! super arrangement and production mate! bravo!
Ah, lovely Del. I had half an idea you’d done this one before. I remember Chris Difford was really surprised (in a good way)when he gave the lyrics to Glenn and it came back as a country song. Such a poignant lyric. Beautifully rendered mate 👍
Thanks, John - as you’ll probably have noticed, country isn’t usually my thing, but a great song is a great song - and this is a great song! Cheers, matey! :-)
This Squeeze song was just asking for the Del treatment, I bleedin' loved it mate !
Super job, Del! This one always made me larf 🧊 for 🐈⬛ 🐈
Ah, terrific playing, singing the whole arrangement Del. A fab song to get stuck into and you did it brilliantly, as per 👍
I like Mel! Actually, i LOVE Mel. She is sooo lovely and spirited. Sweet doggie too❤ This makes me feel happy. Thank you Mel and Del!!!!!
Mel’s great, isn’t she - so much positive energy! Thanks, Joo! :-)
