Those poses are just so relaxed. I wonder if he just had some friends pose while he grabbed the poses
You said it right, "...it has to do with the particular taste and sensibilities of those artists themselves!" the two different approaches in laying out comic art pages...years ago, I did something similar to Campbell's way but not as detailed I would then redraw the same on an actual Bristol board but after sometime, I noticed - as you mentioned - that my spontaneity was not there and I found the actual art was not as fluid, as natural as it had been on the sheet of paper that I had originally sketched out the page. Now, I go straight to the Bristol board - I was watching a Twitch session where Jim Lee was drawing a Superman page or cover or something....he was explaining his thought process and he would use the same stick figures to quickly sketch out the characters, buildings but would erase and redraw several times before he decided to flesh out the character and even then, he would erase some portion of the drawing and change it. It does make sense to do the entire process on the original art board than a sheet of paper...saves time, as you mentioned, and it just keeps it much more fluid. I do my writing and everything from start to finish - I do hire out colorists and professional comics inkers to ink some of my covers and will do more so in the future - and because I do everything (slow process, especially, with having to care for my little toddler every day of the week excerpt on Sundays:-) ) it does take me longer but I am enjoying it. You can check out my process photos and videos on IG AGL COMICS and definitely checkout my Kickstarter that will be dropping on April 15, 2025. I hope to not disappoint comics fans of the Bronze Age, Marvel Comics styles or at least that is my intent. Excellent video BTW. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your Followers. AGL
would love to see some christmas themed ones :)
7:51 when I brainstorm or try to figure out the composition (especially when it's in a difficult perspective) I find it helps me to draw small so that I won't get stuck obsessing over irrelevant details or get obsessed with drawing instead of actually figuring out the composition / perspective. I basically draw thumbnails and then scale them up when I find a composition I like and then draw a detailed picture on top of that.
I thought no one knew this song. Amazing art too!
Its so tough though when you're tracing over the smaller roughs blown up, you can lose the energy, but I agree it seems to be better this way than enlarging it by eye, but sometimes you really nail it in the rough, and it would be nice just to use that actual line drawing in the finished work just touched up with say the computer.
Campbell's approach translates really well to drawing digitally
Pretty sweet.
Great video tom!! Super insightful. I'd love to see more of your own processes and compositions!
Thanks man! I'm always trying to find a way to sneak some of my own work and process into these videos, so stay tuned for more of that 👍
These books were great. I have the Avengers Rough Cut…George Perez’s pencils were gorgeous.
Why dont you see videos of comic artist doing pages start to finish!?!? What secrets are being kept from us!?!? 🤔
Go to Jim Lee's channel. You can watch 8 hour videos of him doing literally that 👍
Is this channel mostly for him to talk about rare art books, or do we also see original content and advice? No judgment, just wondering
Is it rare, or just out of print? It was published by Penguin Random House. I don't think they do low print runs, do they?
Check out the rest of my videos. I think it's sort of a combination of both.
@@RarebitFiendsI thought it being out of print makes it rare, but who knows.
@thomaspitilli You can easily find copies for sale online. You can have a copy in your hands next week for less than $50, probably less if you spend time hunting for it. When talking about books printed in the 21st century, rare books are really only the ones from boutique publishers with print runs in the hundreds. The books you can't find for sale online at any price, or if there is one for sale... it's only that one copy globally.
I have that book - its fantastic! Just wish they had printed it larger.
Yeah, if it were printed at Artist's Edition size, that would be amazing!
Great video.and yeah, after a thirty-five break, starting to read comics again, I agree that the books are better than the movies by MILES.
Yeah I'd like to go through the contents of that book. Gil Kane wouldn't happen to be in there would he? Gil Kane had the best process of all yet he didn't really talk about it. Adam Kubert seems to have combined Gil Kane and Joe Kubert's processes. He probably knew Kane pretty well.
Gil Kane isn't in the book, unfortunately. But, I have seen some of his process stuff online. Seems like he used very geometric figure and background shapes to compose his panels. And you're right, Adam Kubert seems to do the same in that regard.
Your channel is a tresure trove ..a minefield of real usable information for aspiring comic artists ..many thannks to you !!
Wow, that's really kind of you to say! I'm glad to hear you're getting something helpful out of the video. Thanks for watching!
There are many ways to go about the PROCESS. However hopefully we all end up making the same final output or can. I say this because there are so many decisions to make in creating a page. It would be nice if there were rules by which to come to better decisions. What really slows you down is not being able to make a decision. If neither way is wrong have you ever struggled to make a decision simply because it didn't matter what decision you made?
Very interesting. Sounds like a paralysis by analysis kind of situation. I think we can all fall victim to that at some point. Sometimes, for the sake of time, and for the sake of momentum, you just have to make the decision and let the chips fall where they may. Not every decision you make will be a good one, but even a bad decision is better than doing nothing at all.
OMG.. I have this one! Nice to see it behind the curtains.
Oh cool! We're both lucky to have such a great book.
Yet another great video bro, keep em coming! 🎉
I appreciate that, James! Thanks for much for watching 😊
@ My pleasure! We need to do a collab and go in depth into Jim or J Scott together….
in all honesty, Campbell's approach is the best approach, as it solves ALOT of storytelling problems from early on. You got to be VERY experienced to go the Jim Lee way, and he was also potentially repeating storytelling devices at that point. Bonus: Campbell's approach also accounts for how each page is read as you open the book, which can further open the possibilities in how you control the space of the "double-page-spread" to tell the story.
Yes, if someone had to pick one of these two approaches, I suppose Campbell's would be the safer pick. You're right in that Jim Lee had, even then, lot's of pages under his belt to get away with his approach. I do think there's something to be said about the spontaneity of Lee's approach that allows for lot's of energy and "happy accidents". I think the cool thing is, ultimately there's no one way, or best way.
You need to read Eduardo Risso's book on storytelling.
I always enjoy j .scot cambell. But isn't there a lot goin on in the page to comprehend whats going on?
Keep in mind, that is four separate pages on one page. I think each of those pages reads super clearly. When looked at as a whole though, I can see where his arrangement can look busy.
That book looks cool AF. Thanks for the vid. Pretty good 👍
It's a really great book! Thanks for watching 👍
Those pencils are clean! No shade to the team that put this comic out, but I would read a comic with just those pencils. They’re so good! Thank you for the post and inspiration . Peace.
What I am doing, currently, is drawing 2 1/2 x roughly 4 inch thumbnails of my pages. My problem is, despite not trying to capture character likeness, I tend to get sucked in and overly detail the thumbnails 😅 When I have s thumbnail I'm happy with, I scan it and resize it, print then light box it onto the page. Interesting to see that book. Thank you for sharing 🤘 Now, I have to break the pencil to ink Barrier. Wish I had a fraction of Alfredo Alcala's inking skill... need to find a method that works for me AND the story.
Solid process, thanks for sharing that. Glad to hear you've figured out what works well for you. The pencil to ink transition can be a scary one, I hear ya. Maybe I can make a more in depth video on that soon.
As soon as I saw the thumbnail of Jim Lees art I clicked but was the other page you showed J Scott Campbell?
That was definitely J. Scott Campbell! The video is about those two artists 👍
Thank you for the information.
No problem! Thanks for watching 👍
yes this camera moving always non stop even when speak now make me feel sick , agree whit you its too much that why i love more the way how English movies series make it fixe camera best from Switzerlan comics guy too ;)
I forgot to drop a comment. I genuinely appreciate videos that are pretty informative on the comic making process. With a little bit of 90s nostalgia, gotta appreciate the most visually expressive decade.
Yeah, please do th Avengers video, that would be awesome
New subscriber here! Nice walkthrough - like you I'm a process geek- Do you know what typo of pencil he used - the variation in tone is incredible!! Him content with just the pencilling to follow the story.. Lol Btw is that your music that's rockin in the background??! - I noticed the guitar...lol
I wouldn't know what pencil he was using, but maybe I'll have Ron on the channel one day and we can ask him! And no that's not my music haha. The best I can do on that bass is make some random sounds here and there.
I am trying out this tracing paper method uou use Tom. But my sketch got smudged a little bit. I was wondeting how uou avoid that from happening. Do you use a harder graphite like a 2h?
As a comic artist I’m always learning and I love the “raw” editions of books. Not to family with Ron’s work but it looks like he may have been an inspiration or influence to Jim Lee and his style. There are some similarities with structure and layouts. I think I’m a fan of Ron’s now thank you.
Such great stuff! I first learned of and fell in Love with Ron Garney's amazing art work when he restarted Hulk's comic book run back in '99, written by my favorite comic artist and writer, John Byrne! It's such a great series. I'd LOVE to find a Rough Cut version of that series, especially the first issue.
His Hulk work is great too. I don't think there is a Rough Cut version of that though, unfortunately. I'd love to see an Artist's Edition of all of his Captain America work one day!
Great video, Thomas...just 'great'! I loved your insightful narration on this 'time-honored' comic process.
Thanks for checking out the video, Chip! I'm happy to hear you enjoyed it.
good video. interesting that he started out with an interest in sculpture
Your channel is a treasure. Really great content 👍
As a kid I very liked illustrations in books series Battletech. It was just simple black and white line drawings, almost like this sketches in the comix.
Oh cool! I'm not familiar with that comic, but I love black and white come work so I'll have to look it up 👍
@@thomaspitilli well, it actually not a comic. Its a book, series of books.
Thomas thanks for putting this up. I've always had an appreciation for comics and cartooning, and have been sketchbooking on and off for some years. The more I get into comics, the more I really appreciate how massive this container is. Anything I would want to draw, any story I would want to tell, can fit into this apparently unlimited universe. I just read a beautiful wordless graphic novel called "Flood", by Eric Drooker, great stuff. The casual observer and art snobs do not get how precise, how detailed and how accurate these works can be, and not only that, but you can dial it up or back to taste. This crew highlighted here are masters of anatomy, perspective, composition and proportion, and the panels are really beautiful, well-crafted and interesting. On the other hand, some of the most successful cartoons like Peanuts, Garfield, B.C., are not complex and would not require decades of training to render....not to be obvious. Longer story short, it's really grabbed me by the face as an approach to drawing, I'm pretty sure I'm in.
The endlessness of story opportunity in the comics medium is definitely such an amazing thing. Glad you're finding inspiration in this art form. I had bought a copy of Flood years ago, it's such a beautiful example of what can be done with just visual storytelling and no words. Blood Song, also by Eric Drooker is really great as well.
Great Insight Thomas!
Thank you!
There's an FF issue done by Alan Davis - its ptetty awesome. I also have the Thor issue which is good and the Avengers and Cap A issue. Cool video!
I didn't know there was a Rough Cut of Alan Davis' FF. I have the full colored version of that whole series and it's really great. I'd love to get that penciled version. I already ordered the Thor Rough Cut, based on some of the suggestions in this comment section.
I’m all on my lonesome tonight, so, of course I’m watching process videos :D…this is a great one!
@@Opipop Awesome 👍
People with hand tattoos should make videos that involve focusing on their hands because that tattoos are a constant visual distraction.
Check out my OnlyHands.
Love your take on this cover!
Thank you!
I have one of these but with John Romita Jr. It was an issue of Thor.
Just ordered that one on ebay 😉

Awesome, nothing like seeing pencils. Please do the George Perez pencils. Thank you !
@mexicanusrex9418 Will add that to the list!
I love process and pencil editions. I have a few of the unwrapped and they're a treasure trove of insights. I hope they do a lot more of these pencil only versions.
Yes, me too! I'll try and make more videos of pencil stuff too 👍
Thank you from France. I discover you're channel this past week. Many loud informations and passion!
Thanks for joining! Glad to have you here 👍
What kind of pen are you inking with? I like the way it varies the lines, it doesnt look like a nib or brush though
