    I have never heard anyone before refer to the gesture, in drawing, as 'the soul of the drawing'. That was brilliant. I'll remember that from here on out. Yes, many have described it like that, but not said it quite that way. I really like that, as it captures what 'gesture' is actually all about. Good going, Thomas. thanks.

    I think comics should not be inked. The pencil gives so much life to an illustration by the different values. It also gives more control over the focus points. When ink is applied it's too much "absolute" and kill all the depth. I would love for comics to keep the pencils and use ink only to enhance some contours. A good example of what I mean is your maryjane and spiderman upside down (in another video). It wasn't finished but gives a good idea of what a finished product could look like. 100% black ink only looks old. And by the way, I love your work, great gestures and definitely have a distinctive style that we associate with your name.

    • @thomaspitilli
      @thomaspitilli วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you! I'm glad you liked that piece. I can't agree with you about comics not being inked, though. I think the blending of pencils and ink is the hallmark of comic art. There are, of course, exceptions, but mostly I'm a huge fan of black and white comic art. I think with the proliferation of digital art, the impact of true ink on paper has diminishing. But, here's hoping we're at the beginning of a black and white comeback!

      @thomaspitilli I would like to add, I am an artist too making my living as a storyboard artist, still fairly young in my midthirties. A couple weeks ago, I would have totally agree with you about "traditions". But in the past weeks I got an illness that kept me bedridden for two weeks straight and unable to work. During that time I had a lot of time to think. I thought about my work and the way I do it. I am too much like the others with slight differences. A trained eye will spot my work, but the average person will confuse my work with others artists. I came to the conclusion that if I have to die tomorrow I would prefer my work to stand out. We basically have two choices: blend in with traditions and be among similar copies of us or make bold moves and stand out. Making bold moves is dangerous. It's a fine thread where it's easy to fall, but success is far more rewarding. I decided to start walking on the thread, live the pain and look for meaning. With all this I think I have a better understanding of artists, which I often look past, like Picasso. Breaking the rules, the traditions, the expectations. (Pardon my lack of proper english, I'm french native)

    I loved how in the last comparison, with that landscape image, you can see how John has edited out information as he continued to refine the image, simplifying the background to distinguish the relationship between the figures on the page. Looking at other artists, Jim Lee for example, will often create a finished piece in pencils, which doesnt leave as much freedom or interpretation for refinement when applying the inks later on.

    • @thomaspitilli

    I think a great way to define gesture is to explore the rhythm of a figure. When starting out, try to use a single line that captures the overall flow or movement of a single figure and build from that. Usually that single line will establish the longest points in a form. Using single, simple lines, the C, S and I to represent the movement within a figure is the easiest way to interpret the gesture of figure. The idea is to ignore extraneous detail or contours and just focus on the movement of the figure.

    • @thomaspitilli
      @thomaspitilli 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Totally! The C S I approach is a great way to make sure you're simplifying the pose into the most basic gestures 👍

I have respect for comic artists that have to draw really fast and really good to meet their deadlines. I would also like to add something that I have been trying lately for "gesture" practice/improvement: Pick any action movie you like and when you see a scene that you like "pause" it and make a screen shot. Then transfer that to Photoshop and use that as reference. You can even print it bigger so that you see details that you missed. Of course the key here is to get sketch/draw faster to get better. Good luck and keep grinding! A

    Great tips. Repetition the same thing is a good idea, and this maybe with different tools.

    I was trying to find an analysis of Stuart Immonen’s work, and found your video. Great work. I had no idea he was so versatile. I became a fan after his artwork in Secret Identity the later in X-Men. Thanks for your insights and for taking the time to share and review his work.

    Great tips! I definitely need to get better at figure drawing this year. The Nexus book looks really useful.

      It's a great book! I think Steve sold out of the print version, but the PDF is still available.

    I want to actually finish an art project, either my children's book or a small comicbook. Or actually make my comic strip Induatrial Complex into something coherent

    I do want to improve my art skills! Maybe I'll finish drawing through Bridgman this year. In the meantime I'll be watching all the Steve Rude and Tom Pitilli videos I can. Great advice in this video tom!

      Thanks Ben! Bridgman's anatomy book is one that I had when I was younger, but haven't looked through it in a long time. Maybe that will be one I dive back into this year as well. Any additional education is helpful, for all of us. Thanks as always for watching!

    My experience with self-teaching is that it's much less time-efficient, but far more cost-efficient than any kind of mentorship. When I've succeeded in self-teaching, though, it's usually because I've closely followed a good instructional book, which is sort of like a teacher anyway. I'm not sure what I'm saying, but I'm definitely saying it. Enjoyed your thoughts!

      Any kind of instruction, when actually applied and practiced, can be incredibly helpful 👍 Glad to hear you're motivated to put what you learn into practice!

    Ohhh man!!! ... I can't believe I never knew they made smaller softcover versions of those artist editions?! They always seemed cool but way too big for me to store in my bookcase so I never bothered. About to purchase the David Mazzucchelli’s Daredevil and the Mike Mignola one. Thanks for another awesome vid!

    I agree, erasing is very much part of it particularly when one is an advanced artist because one knows better that how a certain drawing or a pose can be worked out even better with some alterations...I see jim lee do that all the time .. He says his process involves 30 percent erasing and 70 percent drawing ..softening a drawing with a kneaded eraser helps with the second step of refining the drawing ... David finch does it twice in his process.

    • @thomaspitilli
      @thomaspitilli 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes, Jim Lee is a great example of a great artists who utilizes the eraser as a productive part of his process. The 70/30 estimation is a good rule of thumb. Not being scared to erase and knowing how to use it to your benefit is a big part of growing as an artist, and hopefully one we can all take into 2025 👍
