Dialing in the Back of a Spindle Shaft
See how to dial in the back of a spindle shaft using a spring punch in order to stop unacceptable run-out.
Bill Murphy of C & M Precision Spindle goes over a less common but helpful process of dialing in the back of a precision spindle, in this case a Matsuura 20,000 RPM. He uses a spring punch to take stress out in the nut (here a KTM-12). Stress can build up in nuts on the threads since they are helical planes.

    Great stuff, would love to ship you a pair for re-fit. Do you grind collets as well? Would be nice to have a matched set. If not, what's your best recommendation for R8 collet brands? Subscribed!!

      Sorry I haven't needed new collets for 25 years. We do bigger spindles most of the time. CNC grinders, lathes, mills and fill in with the knee mills for my entertainment. Once you try a 5-Pack you will believe. So much better.

    Hello. My Bridgeport clone (Comet) is in dire need of your services, ... do you do work on spindles shipped from Canada? Thanks for your videos.

    • @cmprecisionspindle
      @cmprecisionspindle 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sure. It is easier for you to go over the border and ship from a US UPS office than all the paper work then have me ship back to them. Be sure to leave sub assembly together and send the nose cap. Wooden box wrapped in cardboard will be the least expensive. Cheers, Bill Murphy

      SpankRanch Garage on TH-cam, You will have to take head apart and rebuild. Sorry. They need rebuild every so often. I limit myself to spindles but I found that video in seconds looking under "Bridgeport mill head problems". It would great if you put your rebuild journey on TH-cam for the next guy in Brazil if possible.

    What is the price for the 5 pack and regrind the items you mentioned if I supply my bpt spindle.

    • @cmprecisionspindle
      @cmprecisionspindle ปีที่แล้ว

      $650., for bearings, R-8 grind. Be sure to send the Nose cap and the sub-assembly still together. UPS is still the cheapest, jut make sure it is in a wood box so it can take a UPS drop. Cheers, Bill

    Why don’t you just blue loctite the nose piece in and forget about the little grub set screw?

    • @cmprecisionspindle
      @cmprecisionspindle ปีที่แล้ว

      I've seen it fail too much. If you use all the steps to Loctite it is great but no one does.

    Awesome info and video! Thank you very much. I have always wondered how much wear accumulates on the spindle splines and how that affects the noise and performance. I've rebuilt a couple of Bridgeport Vari-Speed heads, and I always replace the Spindle Hub. Do you see worn splines in your work and what are your thoughts on this? Thanks again!

    • @cmprecisionspindle
      @cmprecisionspindle ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on how they are used. We always see massive wear on the Hurcos. Especially in the center. How much torque and load is applied for how long. Some just need a new shaft others can be welded up but very rare and cheaper to buy a new one. Shafts have gotten way to pricey lately and the quality is softer. That center hole is a stopper for most shops to make unless they have a gundrill. Cheers

    Do you offer this upgrade for a Clausing Kondia FV1 (non cnc)?

    • @cmprecisionspindle
      @cmprecisionspindle ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes that should work for a Kondia. 3 3/8" Quills. I had one shop send in 5 Kondias years ago and they were NEW. Nothing wrong but he had one Bridgeport done and his machinists were fighting over who got to use the worn Bridgeport vs the new Kondias! the spindle upgrade was the only difference. It was worth it to him for peace. Cheers, Bill

    Good information, thank you. I suspect because you're in the spindle "business" it seems like "nothing" to throw on another pair of bearings . In my world some of those bearing pairs run in the $300 - $500 range!. If Robin Renzetti [sp?] rebuilds his high precision spindles with "just" three bearings , that will be good enough for me!

    • @cmprecisionspindle
      @cmprecisionspindle ปีที่แล้ว

      You are welcome. I'm sure Robin does excellent work. Cheers, Bill

      You're really sucking on his teat pretty hard aren't you. I bet if he jumped off a bridge, you would say "how high". More bearing doesn't equal more precision, it equals more rigidity.
