In these videos I forge Japanese blades by hand. I heat treat them, polish them, and make all the parts necessary for mounting them. These videos are targeted to people who are interested in metal art, blacksmithing, forging, knife-making, and sword-making or are simply interested in maker videos. I try to present content in a calm, relaxing fashion that anyone can enjoy watching, whether you participate in this hobby or not.
My most recent blades are made from modern high carbon steel, such as W1 drill rod and custom W2 steel bars. In the future I plan on smelting my own tamahagane and making swords and daggers from that ancient steel.

Really love your channel. I was wondering do you have a method of hitting a specific sori measurement? When you quench in water do you have a pre-set curve to get the amount of sori that you want or do you just pre curve it to get a really deep sori? I am trying to get one that is at 1" or slightly over. Also do you plan on getting more W2 to sell? I hope so, that is some really good steel. I hope that you return to your channel with more videos. I have really learned a lot from this channel and I hope that you finish this shinogi zukuri project.
Sub the blade with egg white, let it dry, then clay it up. The protein acts like glue and carbonises during the heatup
I have only made a couple of tsuka's so far but i used the cheap woodworking chisels from harbor freight and sharpened the crap out of them. It ultimately works and you can get decent results but it's a HUGE pain and takes forever. I really appreciate this video a ton

This was an excellent video. Thank you!
I'm really glad you liked it.
I spent 7 years in Japan learning from the best I’ve been making katanas and samurai swords for 30 years I must say your work is amazing well done and I do have access to any Japanese stones you may need
Thank you so much for your kindness. I feel that my swords still look like toys compared to the real thing.
@ far from toys don’t underestimate yourself. You’re highly talented. I have been doing this for many many years and you stand out. Keep up the good work, my friend.
Great content very informative, your videos have helped me tremendously thank you. I did have a few questions if this gets to you I hope you can help. What size are the box tongs you used when forging your swords, and what type of pipe did you use for your sword tempering in oil rig. I noticed you cut out a section to heat the oil inside of the pipe did you weld a bottom plate. Again thank you so much for your video excellent quality!
Just water, no salt ?

Hello! What is the reason of the oxidation before the refractory apply? ❤thanks
@@Fromers Not sure. I think maybe it creates microscopic surface irregularity. All I know is the clay sticks better when I do this.
Will you be restocking these? amazon and ebay says you are out!
I am curious are you alternating on the sandpaper and waterstones because you are missing some "in-between" grit sizes on the stones or? This is fascinating because I actually polished my best friend who sadly died in 2019's sword which was a real hand forged and folded differentially tempered katana, and I ended up using ferric chloride ( which was handy because we were both working around learning to make jewelry from his mother and her BF who were master jewelers at the time, so ferrich cholride and sand paper of all diff extremly fine grits was available... I did it with sanding sticks and paper and a buffer but I wasnt happy witht he hamon and didnt understand you can use Lemon Juice to etch the bljade once its polished etc etc... this is a greta technique! I am going to have to build myself a sanding drum like you have! Thanks for the awesome video!
@@VanXHydrA Ya, it's because I don't have stones in all the grits.
thank you so much for sharing your valuable information and teaching us these things! You are awesome!
New Jerusalem a place to make things.
Not that I could *remotely* afford one ... how do you get one of your masterpieces? (And do you do Medieval-style swords? I'm more of a Knight than a Ninja to be honest...) - Anyway looks amazing, you're obviously exceptionally talented & knowledgeable.
@@Ser_Arthur_Dayne Thank you! I don't sell swords. I give them to friends and family as gifts.
Roger that, lucky folks bruv. Thank you very much for answering and of course making the videos.
I have tried your "clay mix" recipe. I cannot keep the clay from drying too fast and cracking. I have tried thinner mix and thicker mix. I've tried drying it in the forge, outside of the forge outdoors and drying it indoors. Nothing that I try keeps it from cracking. Any advice?
@@PourMeAnother Sorry. No idea. I've never had that problem. I'd try a different brand of refractory cement or mortar.
@@oldpuebloforge I added a little sand and it all held together. It turned out amazing!! I will be buying more of your W2 soon
Thank
I've purchased 3 and they are high quality bar stock I really love this steel
@@georgiamade892 Thank you for supporting the channel and thanks for the kind words.
Will you ever try forging a straight blade and quenching it to the final shape?
@@NvrchFotia I have done that many times in the past. I don't do it anymore for a fewreasons. 1. I like the look of more dramatically curved blades. 2. The curve generated by quenching is uneven along the length of the blade. Japanese swirdsmiths fix this unevenness by heating the spine of the blade after quenching. I don't know how to apply this technique properly. 3. Precurving the blade camoflauges the unevenness of the curve created by quenching
Yeah, but how did that one sword master manage to create a hamon with a perfect dragon image in it?
@@Baronstone magic?
Great content, How heavy is your anvil?
@@ricardocorral1922 200 lbs
Can’t you just use a polarised lens which removes reflections since reflected light is always polarised. Since any material would be a lattice structure and light reflected is electrons jumping to a higher state of energy then falling back to its position releasing heat and light, since the lattice structure aligns the atoms the light each one re-emits is the same polarity. Just fun fact for ya
I’d have a wooden template made up to lin the blade up with two points of contact so you don’t need to eyeball it, just slide the blade up to the template and butt it up to the wood and it should hold firmly, identically placed
Where is next video sir🙏🙏🙏
3:35 sorry this clay, can reuse?
@@debung1998 No.
Brilliant, thank you for the knowledge drop!
hi, i got the part where u use furnace cement as it has high heat ressistant. but what does the iron oxide do?
Partly it decreases the shrinkage of the cement as it dries, making it less likely to crack and flake off. Partly I just like the color.
How did you convex the stones?
Some of that is the stones wearing down from use. Some is me preparing them with a rough stone, called a lapping stone.
Lol hey! I use 3 in 1 oil aa well as paper! Really good work brutha and good explanations
Could u add a download for the Spreadsheet Please? or show a more detailed explanation of the formulas?? Ty. Have a Blessed Day!😃😃😃
Beautiful blades. Can you make a video on how you wrapped the handles from start to finish please? I’m trying to do one but I’m having major amounts of trouble making the finished knot on the butt cap of the handle. Thanks.
Rare to see someone make a real water quenched hamon. Now everyone makes fake curve damascus katanas and it pains me to see them just beat the curve in with a hammer instead of clay quenching like it should be done to call a katana and no a look-like katana.
Thank you! Just so you know, Japanese sword masters do forge katanas with some curve before the quench. It is a bit of a myth that the curve is 100% the result of the quench.
What an amazing craftmanship, love to see the amount of love and effort that goes into the swords. The fact you make these for your kids makes it even better! Results are looking incredible!! ✌
Can you recommend a place or website for buying Japanese knife sharpening stones?
I don't get mine from a single source. I get them from all over. I have gotten some off Amazon and Ebay, and others from tool supply wbsites.
@@oldpuebloforge ok thank you so much.

A hacksaw in the right hands could rip through scale and small dents.
This is pretty much the method I came up with while doing my wakizashi. Your shinogis came out way crisper and more uniform though. I still had to readjust them with a file, but as long as they are crisp and symmetrical in the final product, I'm happy. Both shinogis and yokotes are nice and crisp. Do you have any method to get the profile and distal taper nice and uniform? I just did it by eye. Also, any method to forge the ridge on the spine (mune)? I just leave it flat and file it, but I saw Ilya Alexeyev seems to forge it in, which makes me think it was done traditionally, but I find that it makes the whole forging far more difficult with any method I can think of.
I have no particular method for getting distal taper correct. Just lots of holding the sword up and sighting down the lines. I leave the mune flat and then grind it in. It seems awful hard to forge it.
Also very nice work on this series I am very impressed thank you for sharing your experience with us all.
Thank you!
For those whom are not familiar when you are working in a black or almost black heat it is planishing. This is done with very light hammer blows and can be done cold but I personally do not recommend it. I like to normalize and then anneal after this process to relieve any additional stress from the planishing. I hope this helps someone else godbless and good health.
Stellar video! Watching you work is extremely helpful, thank you so much for this!
I'm very happy you found the video useful.
__=
After watching that I think I need quenching too.
Awesome vid? Where by chance did you find that badass anvil?
Thank you. I had it specially made. In fact I had 20 of them made. I sold 18 and kept 2. They're 200 pounds.
hello, thank you for this video. I am a beginner amateur knife maker. I am always surprised not to see you annealing your blade before working them with a black stand or especially with a file. (raise the blade to temperature and cool very slowly in vermiculite) do the 3 normalization phases act as annealing and will make the steel easier to work with later? or we never anneal a katana. thanks in advance Demasÿ david from Belgium
For practical purposes, normalizing is the same thing as annealing. I believe that for steel, true "annealing" involves controlling the rate of cooling to achieve a particular outcome. So, technically, cycles of heating and air cooling results in "normalizing". But it is what most people call "annealing". The purpose is to relieve internal stresses before quenching to help minimize distortion during quenching. It also eliminates any possible hardening that has occurred and makes the steel as easy as possible to file.
hello from Belgium, already a very interesting and even very relaxing video. a quick question, why do you use the rounded side of your file from time to time? Does it make the file work more aggressive? THANKS
Thank you for the kind words. Yes, it makes it more aggressive. It focuses all the force in a small area.
