Journey Through A Mountain - The Coniston Coppermines Through Trip in the Lake District - Part 2
In part 2 we continue to descend our way through the multiple levels inside the old workings, following more twisting levels and finding ourselves in the aptly named 'earthquake passage'
This is a shorter video than the previous one due to a few missing video files leading on from the end of this video. We are revisiting the mine this week to do the whole trip again so that we can collect the rest of the clips and i will continue the next video from there..

Join us at the top of Coniston Old Man, in this Video we descend through the abandoned mine workings inside the mountain and exit hundreds of feet down, through the lower workings, via multiple piches. Through enormous open stopes, twisting levels and tight crawls, whilst also getting to see the brightest blues and greens formations left behind since the mines have been abandoned. Part 2 coming...

More Underground Digging and installing reinforced pipework in an 1800s Iron Mine
มุมมอง 35525 วันที่ผ่านมา
We begin to install reinforced pipework, to replace the slowly deforming wheelie bin which is currently maintaining access to the mine. This footage is the result of our first 3 hour digging session. We return with Hammer and Chisels to complete the job in the next video..
Stabilising a collapsed Cumbrian Iron Mine level and further Exploration
มุมมอง 28529 วันที่ผ่านมา
In this video we attempt to shore up a collapse with my sacrificed wheelie bin and then continue on to explore further areas of the mine. There are deeper levels that we don't access, these were covered in later trips and will be shown in upcoming videos. I have sped up any footage where we retrace our steps to try and keep the video length down a bit!
Exploring 'HV2' - An Enormous Abandoned Iron Mine in Cumbria
มุมมอง 266หลายเดือนก่อน
In this video we manage to squeeze our way into a long forgotten Furness Iron Mine which hasnt been worked since the late 1800s. In one level we discover an old shovel and pickaxe, lent against a wall by some miners a couple of hundred years ago. And we work our way down a 190m long drainage level, picking our way carefully through some sections of dodgy collapses. The video has been edited to ...

Alot of work for iron
@@HiramJonesjr-dx8tl It was extremely valuable during the period the mines were in operation
Not a safe bet standing under a person on repell
@@HiramJonesjr-dx8tl That’s correct, I’m filming from off to the side and inside a section of tunnel, the wide angle can make it hard to see. Thanks for watching and we hope you enjoy the videos ⛏️
Would be nice to have a description of the rocks and minerals by a geologist! The greens are likely malachite, white = calcite or quartz but I'm not sure what the blue mineral is. Cobalt is blue or pink depending on its hydration.
Thanks for your comment and for watching 👍 I will see what i can do regarding getting some information on the minerals for you!
Greens and blues are mostly malachite, azurite, and crysocholla, there is bits of pink Erythrite in the lower levels, that'll be in the next video. I may be corrected but the black staining is from manganese. There's also lots and lots of chalcopyrite. In the depths of deep level there are beautiful gypsum crystals. White it mostly quartz, although there are small pockets of calcite and cave pearls

It's a amazing place I worked up there one time absolutely beautiful place
@@alan5691 It certainly is!
@furnessmineexploring it was the cottages I think there was 5 or 6 up there that would be me living up there 👍🏻 Great video
Great explore. I’m fascinated by the Coniston mines having walked over the top of The Old Man a few times. Thanks for sharing.
@@jezpayne3245 Thanks and I’m glad you enjoyed watching, hopefully these videos will give you an idea of what’s under your feet when you are walking over the Old Man ⛏️
boy that sure is one big mine, its truly amazing to think thats dug out by hand
@@peteb3365 It’s absolutely huge isn’t it, some of these workings date back to the 16th Century! ⛏️
I'm guessing some of that was on fixed rigging & other bits were pre-rigged for the videoing trip? That level around 12 mins, I was just thinking, that at least this bit doesn't look like you,re on a false floor - and then you pointed out the sides!!
@@MrShotlighter Thanks for your reply, the trip route is pre rigged and has recently been replaced by members of CATMHS (local mine history group) Some areas in the mine are bolted by other explorers who are working on their own routes. And yes the walls in Earthquake Passage are pretty sketchy to say the least! Thanks for watching! ⛏️

boy walking across those logs sure was a quivering bung hole moment! mad!
Where is your edge protection on the pipes
@@robertsharp594 Hi Robert, we’ve covered this in another comment, the rope was rigged from a tree and through a carabiner in a sling which kept the rope clear of any potential hazards.
Since I heard of the 'Nutty Putty' incident this makes my blood run cold......
@@lincolnengland5005 Yes it’s certainly something to keep on the back of your mind when underground!
Must have grown since we dug it open, it was only a 100' then🙂
Rough estimate based on the length of rope used on our descent 👍 We are still in touch with Lindsay, Dennis, Pete and the rest of the crew ⛏️
Excellent cavers. 👍🏼
@@UNCLE-DRONY Thanks for tuning in!!⛏️
67yds? But how many fathoms is that, or hands? Just so I can visualise how deep it is..
@@stonehengemaca From surveys it is estimated to be approx 200ft deep at the 67yd level, which is apparently 33 fathoms deep ⛏️
@@furnessmineexploring Glad we cleared that up. 😂😂

Cheers guys, always a trip I fancied doing but never got round to. Thanks for taking me round! (All be it "virtually") Great footage and the modern LED lighting looks unbelievable to this old git! Looking forward to part 2.
@@MrShotlighter I’m happy to hear you get to see it finally, albeit virtually as you say. The torch technology nowadays is fantastic, much better than a candle in your cap like they would have had back in the day!

I`m sure you had 117 subs when I subbed an hour ago. You might be going viral :)

that was real caving dedication there, imersing ya plums into that icy cold water!
Was a bit on the fresh side, not gonna lie, no undersuit either with it being summer 😅
have new stemples been added as well as rigging...... or were you bouncing around on old mens bones..
New Stemples have been added in the open stope we cross @6:57, these were installed by a local mine explorers, it is known as the MAGS catwalk, which is an acronym made using the first letter of each of those explorers first names ⛏
awsome stuff, just subscribed, remember going down the florence mine when it was pumped down. the size of the workings was out this world.

@ have you ever explored any of the iron mines in eskdale valley?
@ Yeh that sounds relatable, we come out of these mines covered head to to in red mud. Get some very interesting looks when walking back to the vehicles!
@peteb3365 I've stuck my head in some of them up by dalegarth, don't think they go very far?

Much better to free climb it
@@jeraldmartell8404 Id like to see that done, the rock is slimy and wet with Iron ore mud, not to mention the many other issues that would make the climb impossible!
Had to sub for having balls to go down there 👍👊

You wouldn’t want your head torches to not work down there 😂, scary stuff not for me but like watching your vids well done 👍 and safe exploring

I`ve seen them wind up usb chargers. I would take one of them just in case.
Bad enough watching you guys but what about the miners digging that out and using no pit props 😮
@@regpain3811 Undoubtedly a very dangerous job!
Wow loks like you're clambering through in rust
@@Stroopwaffe1 Thick red Iron Ore mud 👌
Good work fellas, it's always nice to see 'a bit of de ole blue' azur rock again. It's also nice to see a lot of decent, stout and well configured 'Y' hangs about the place....... it wasn't always thus. Bluewater 2 kernmantle rope always was like trying to run rusted steel rope through the descender. Looking forward to part 2. Kind regards.
Plenty of rigging around in! Still an extremely sketchy place to be though! Glad you enjoyed, episode 2 will probably be up in a week or so ⛏️
Do you leeave someone at the top to mind your ropes?
@@lawmand no, but we have left details of our location and expected time of exit with people above ground 👍
Fair comment. I've abbed into mineshafts and it always worried me someone would nick them. They were always routes with exits so I didn't worry about getting out. All good fun.
I think this mine ceased operation about the time of the Great War. A good exploration. Thanks for making this video.
@@wishiwas-jd9cd Yes we believe it was late 1800s/early 1900s. Thanks for watching ⛏️
I love that you had a safety at the top before going down to make sure you were comfortable about everything.
@@lividpenguin973 Safety first 👍
That reminds me of when I used to go in coniston mines mines.
Videos from the Coniston area coming up next Colin 👍 Thanks for watching!
Your abseiling technique, with the rope in the bag looked a bit dodgy. Why not drop the rope down ahead of you to take all the twist out?
@@thedogfather5445 Hi mate, Yeh I agree, it wasn’t ideal but I kept the rope in the bag as we weren’t sure how much skanky garbage might be in the bottom of the shaft 😆 It’s definitely not the usual technique!
That rope has more kinks than Ray Davies...
❤❤❤
Mine works were private industry. Rare to have a map of their workings. In Australia and in USA the outcome is cities built over them and in current news homes and people falling into sinkhole collapse of those old mines. All fun and games to go exploring for the guys that do but for community knowledge of these mines and people trained by experience are really important.
We're luckily that this particular mine was the subject of a scandal in the form of a trespass between different royalties, so there are surveys from the court case in our local records office, and the work of intrepid explorers back in the 80s
What do you hope to find down there, or is it just for the thrill and adventure?
Industrial archaeological finds, signs of the men who worked hard to pull the iron out - tools, shoes, pick marks, new (to us) ground, the thrill
12:00 Yeah, that doesn't look dangerous, no thanks. You got balls of steel my friend.
Slow and steady is the way to go down underground 👍
Immtryin to figure for the life of me hiw a cow got over the top of that pipe and that far in,it just isnt adding up.He varelymade it down that shaft, much less a full grown cow
A nearby abbatoir used the shaft as a waste pit for a while before it was re-built with the metal pipe. There's also a large number of car parts and other farm waste there
@FurnessIronMan well that explains that, tyvm. And flooding would scatter that around,so again tks.
Ding dong is a Cornish mine down at West Cornwall near Penzance
Yes it is, however, it’s also the name of a Cumbrian Iron Mine ⛏️
We also have a Mouzell Mine. I went to school in Furness and 76% of the population of the village was Cornish. Best trip I had in Cornwall was down to the bottom of Geevor and out under the Atlantic. Our friend worked down there 👍
My search history now contains: ding dong cumbrie
That red shite takes some washing off . At least your rope was not white . Must be 20 years since I was down there .
Jet wash and a dedicated washing machine! And a red stained back alley 😂

Is this mine in "Henning wood"
@@harryburgess6221 Hi Harry, thanks for enquiring. Unfortunately due to the access arrangement we have negotiated & the extremely unstable conditions inside the mine, we have to keep this particular location confidential. We will try to be as open as possible but as you can appreciate, this is not always possible with regards to sites that are on private property. Many thanks
