CATCHING FISH DOWNTOWN!!! (CORPUS CHRISTI, TX)
Downtown might seem like a nice tourist attraction, but it is also a really good place to fish. Speckled trout, Sheepshead, and Mangrove snapper are a few species that you can expect to catch. Live shrimp under a popping cork seemed to be the trick on this fishing trip.

Started the morning off throwing a Strike King wake bait for redfish but was unsuccessful. That's why you should always have a backup plan! I have never understood All the people who feel they have to reel a fish in so fast that it can’t even swim and just skips along the surface on its side !? Why not just enjoy the fight and relax? What’s the hurry and desperation all about? That reminds me of commercial Tuna fishermen just yanking the Tuna into the boat for a living and seems like No Fun At All !

Maybe to avoid getting it took by a shark
When I’m fishing for specks I always reel them in fast, so I can cast right back out there. With specks they move in schools and often. So the bite might be hot for 2 to 30 minutes, or longer, and then it shuts off. So I try to get as many casts as I can. Also if you’re near sharks, they like fish too lol.
A lot of times they are swimming right at you also so you have to keep up or you can lose them

If you want some advice... When you feel the thump, don't immediately set the hook. Lower your rod tip to give the trout line, then open your bail and let the fish eat the croaker/reposition it in its mouth. Depending on days bite, you can let the fish run for 3-10 seconds... then put your rod tip up, close the bail and the pressure from the fish will set the hook for you. This will increase your hook up ratio drastically when fishing with croaker. Keep in mind you want slack when you open the bail of your reel so the fish does not feel it and spit the croaker out.
Also, you should be using a bigger hook. By June the croaker are bigger 4/0 or 5/0. If the Trout stop being interested in croaker, buy some piggy perch and mix live well half and half. Sometimes the Piggies work better. Fish them the same way as croaker.
Another comment. When fishing with the croaker, keep your rod up at 10-11 O'clock. You can keep that croaker up out of the grass and when you do get a thump, you can easily give the fish 6' foot of line by dropping your rod parallel with water to open bail for it to run.
