Massive Humbucker shootout
Humbucker shootout with no talking: this one was inspired by my decision to swap the pickups in my Epiphone Les Paul. I had Lambertone Cremas in it but it honestly felt like a big letdown in sound for me. So I did a before and after sound comparison after winding and installing the Big Sky Toneworks Kalamazoo set. Then I added a bunch of other guitars that also have humbuckers. Maybe I’m just amusing myself, but I found the results interesting. #epiphone #lespaul #Gibson #es335 #firebird #guildguitars #s100polara #hb1 #prs #zachmyers #bigskytoneworks #lambertones

P90 shootout: Big Sky Toneworks vs Stock Epiphone
มุมมอง 5410 หลายเดือนก่อน
Here’s a side by side shoot out of the stock Epiphone p90’s in my 57 goldtop and the Big Sky Toneworks P90 set. The big difference is that there’s better balance in output between the 2 pickups and the bridge is hotter and warmer. Troubleshooting Strat sounds with Big Sky Toneworks
มุมมอง 76ปีที่แล้ว
Introducing Big Sky Toneworks my new pickup enterprise. These are my Strat prototypes designed to fix my main issue with Strats: they lack body and mids. I designed these to be different yet yield familiar flavors. All knobs were on ten and were through the same fractal preset which is a Fender Deluxe Reverb. I left my sloppy playing in because a) you’ll probably mess up at some point as well b...
Fractal FM9 Jeff Beck inspired preset

There are 5 sweet spots dialed in on the amp as well as...

In addition to the regular tele 3 way switch, there is a mini toggle to run those 2 neck coils in single coil mode (standard tele neck), parallel (hum cancelling and lo...
Catalinbread Dirty Little Secret Demo : 2 British amps in one pedal

Billed as a foundational overdrive, this pedal gives you the flavor of 2 vintage Marshall amps. The Superbass and Superlead. Used for lower gain the Superlead mode excels at that Jimi Hendrix Marshall “clean” sound, and the Superlead gives the classic rock and roll overdrive sounds you’d expect from a plexi. The amp used is the Princeton on my Fractal FM9 with a spring reverb. Get Fractal prese...

50s wiring got me banned from my guitar tech, when I requested to have him switch the guitar back to regular modern wiring. 50s wiring makes your guitar to lose volume. So the tone and volume is not as strong and full sounding. My advice, if you know how to do this mod by yourself. Go ahead and try it, if not leave it alone.

Hey brother! Thanks for the video. I’d like to ask you about what you feel are the biggest letdowns of the Cremas, pushing you to replace them with the Kalamazoo. I’m considering getting some Cremas. But am also keeping an ear out for other pickup sets that might work well for worship settings. Your input on your Crema experience would be super helpful.

I can’t believe it. I could actually tell the Cremas. It was my favorite sound. Followed by the Jazzmaster. I’m new to the notion of guitar tone. I didn’t expect I would be able to tell.

I wish I had bought this guitar years ago instead of the Epi Dot. The neck on the Epi Dot is possibly one of the worst necks one could imagine. Ibanez, on the other hand, has one of the nicest necks. If I buy an AS73 in the future, pickups and electronics will go bye bye. Something I learned about the Epi Dot is that HB size P90 pickups really brightened it up. I bought some Chinese made HB size P90s just to see what they'd sound like in the Dot ... was a massive improvement. And I had SD Antiquities in it! $30 pickups sounding better than Antiquities? Who'd a thunk. The tuning situation ... that's another horror story with the Epi Dot. I put on locking tuners, a String Butler, and Zero fret. One thing I have been doing for some time now is tuning all strings on the 2nd fret. Open strings will be a few cents flat. If you check out James Taylor's video on how he tunes his acoustic guitars, you'll see that open strings should not be tuned precisely. By the way, there is a video of a guy who installed Chinese made HB size P90s in his Epi Dot .... and it sounds fantastic. Psyclone Filter'Tron type pickups by SD would also help a dull sounding semi-hollow ...

I just picked up a 2002 AS73. It has dot inlays like the one in the video. It seems it be bone stock. It plays like a much more expensive guitar. The pickups sound amazing actually. I have a '94 Les Paul Studio, a USA G&L, and a USA Telecaster to compare it to. The Ibanez is outstanding. And for the price, it is hard to beat.

A good representation of the difference in tone. I've always liked the vintage style of wiring, but listening to your recording, I somehow notice that the modern way of wiring, although it reduces the high tones, has more space for coloring the tone, has more mid tones, somehow it's typical for HB PU, that's why they are HB , fatter, fuller tone. I will certainly transfer to modern - it will be the first time I do so.

So much is personal preference. Each has their strength and weakness. I find the Firebird, HB1, and Cremas to be lower output brighter pickups of which the Lambertones are my least favorite, the Gibson is my dream guitar and the benchmark as far as I’m concerned. The Kalamazoo is a very versatile set, not quite the same as the Gibson but incredibly touch dynamic and more clarity. The PRS is the hottest of the bunch and into a driven amp is pure bliss

  • @kennyblackbird5674

Gibson usually market their guitars for the jazz demographic but I suspect the Firebird was geared towards the country & western market to compete with Fender. Even the SG was supposed to be a kinda compact solid body jazz guitar!

You mentioned leaning guitars up against an amp and it always amazes me that so many guitarists, even experienced ones will do that. In general it's a terrible practice and if somebody does it with a Gibson style headstock they are extra foolish. Guitar stands are worth the investment but even though way safer than leaning the guitar on the amp they can still get knocked over on a busy stage. Best is to simply put it in it's case and just do a quick tune before your next set... way better than a snapped headstock or a big gouge on the body, neck, or whatever.
