Gonna be some weekend warrior van life action going down here. I got a 1988 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia edition with a Subaru WRX swap done to it, so I will be posting stuff about my van. Probably some travel stuff, but we'll see how it goes. I'm just waiting for spring to hit and we'll see where I go with this channel. VanLife.
Van Update - VW Vanagon Westfalia
Just a quick update on what's going on with the van these days. I've got a bunch of things planed and a lot of welding that is going to be happening. I'm replacing some some panels and trying to get rid of a bunch of the rust.

I got some new 18" rims for my Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia van. The rims are originally from an Audi and are 18x8.5. I used 10mm spacers on the front and nothing on the back. Music by, Spike's Vibes

A very condensed version of the story of how I ended up with this van. It's a 1987 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia. I bought it in Vancouver, BC and got it up here to Calgary. I'm thinking about seeing the project through and doing a Bostig engine conversation on it, but I'm just not sure yet.

Short video of clips I had of my van on my phone that I originally strung together for my IGTV. Sorry for the vertical video! The van is a 1988 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia. The locations of the clips were Missoula Montana, Glacier National Park Montana and Canmore Alberta Canada.
You have fine T3. But boy oh boy, watch it! Compare the amount of aluminium around the forged original rims and your "look so nice rims" . A child sees that the "look so nice rims" are flimsy around the bolts. What does that mean? A very stringent test, the Bordsteinkante test (that is German) is a test where the rim is driven with high speed under a slant angle to a concrete kerb, and it is not allow to shatter. This mandates the strength of the bolts and hub of the rim, nothing else. Out of my experience in rims it is very, very unlikely that these "look so nice" rims will pass this test. A shattered rim gives you a VW without steering with brings you closer to death. Do not sew VW please.

Great job on the switch. How did you put the plastic adjuster on the metal bracket?
As far as I can see, your alloy rim is not centered, it does not rest on anything. Your rim is only held by screws, if that's the case it's not good. Your wheels will come off. The rim must sit in the middle of the spacer.
Thanks for your concern, but I literally drove around on these rims like this for years and never had a problem.

Haha rusty is right! I've started on those front bits. Hopefully finish them this week then start cutting out those panels next week. . . As for the mirrors, the only mirrors in the van is that one in the closet and on the front window.
Check the area around the Seatbelt bolts by the door. You will need to lift a bit of the carpet. You dont want your seatbelts coming off in the event of an accident. Good luck with the work. Looking forward to seeing the end result!
Omg it's funny you mention that because I was trying to change my seatbelt one time and the bolt would not move and finally after applying a crazy amount of pressure the bolt and the part that it threaded into just kind of snapped haha. Now that bolt just spins, so I it's really broken. I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to cut that part out and weld in a new piece. I just gotta go cut that bit out of a doner van before I hack it out. The never ending project lol.
@@letsgowestfalia2405 right behind ya. We are just waiting on our replacement engine to be installed and then addressing the welding in the exact same spot on both sides.
@@grinstarr LOL No way! That's hilarious! Well at least mines only one one side. I wish it was on the the passenger side though, cuz on the driver side there is a that tank there in the way, so gotta remove that first and I'm sure I'll break something trying to get that off. lol.

I'm going to be working no the van today. I'll see how far I get this weekend. If I get something finished I'll make an update video. Probably closer to end of this coming week will be more realistic though haha. And ya I'm going to spray it myself, but just going to rattle can the parts I replace (for now). I'll spray the whole van sometime in the future. But I just want to fix the big stuff for now so I can get on the road this summer. Then I'll continue fixing thing this winter.

Hey, yes I did. It took FOREVER!!! If I was you I'd just pay someone to do it. It's a major pain in the ass.
Well, how did it drive, ride and handle ? I went from 14 to 16"s. I am not running grabbers, and teh sidewalls seem a little soft...it's a westy and feels a bit like a marshmallow when I drive....
It was like going from night to day with these rims. The drive was a million times better! Not so wavy like with those 14. For me it was a major improvement in handling. If your thinking of getting 18's I'd suggest thinking about lifting the van. My front tire rubbed a bit once when I was off road with these. I was going super slow, but still they hit as I was making a turn when I hit a deep bump. I am going to lift mine 1.5 inches and put some stiffer suspension on. I will also put a little bigger tires on once I do that.
Did you get the center bore machined beforehand? Was it expensive?
Sorry for the slow reply. I haven't logged into this channel ages lol. Anyhow, no I didn't. The rims just fit on without any modification.
What is the ET of these rims?

@@letsgowestfalia2405 nope. I got my 18" audis mounted last summer. Mine are ET47 and I went with 20mm spacers front and rear.

Corey Huff They are 14” rims with a 5X112 mount original Vanagon rim. Not exactly sure what size the tires are, I’ll check when I get home though k.
