Trio (Kenwood) R-2000 communications receiver, circa 1988
Despite its reputation as a rock-solid receiver, I didn't take to the trio R-2000 too well when I first acquired it - the controls didn't seem very user-friendly. And the fact that the VFO was alternately either completely frozen or very erratic didn't help (it seems this is a common fault, quickly cured by cleaning the the opto-reader and spinner disk).
But, after using it for a while, this is now one of my favourite vintage receivers. It's stable, sensitive, and has good audio. And if it can pick up here in northern England a long-path ham signal from Melbourne, it must be doing a pretty good job.

Someone asked for more content on this old receiver, so here goes... It hadn't warmed up fully when I made this video, so was a bit 'drifty'. But hey, it's 75 years old, so it's entitled to drift a little. Thanks and 73s to Tuomo in Finland. The 'S' meter and speaker were optional extras in 1949 - a mark of post-war austerity. They're probably now worth more than the radio. Please see my other ...

I was an apprentice at Pye when these were made. They demonstrated them at the Radio Show at Earls Court. Unfortunately the power transistors were prone to fail after a short time. We apprentices were sent to the exhibition to solder in a new set of transistors for each demo. Working behind the scenes the whilst the punters lined up to listen to a piece of equipment that was doomed to pack up after about half an hour. Happy days,

Hi - thanks for your comments. It's a great radio - I no longer own this one and I regret selling it. Yes, you will almost certainly need an external antenna for shortwave reception. These come in many forms and there is much advice online about the best types - for example: long-wire, or various forms of dipole or magnetic loop. Much depends on reception conditions, topology etc at your location. A low-cost experiment that you could try is just to connect a long wire (say, 10-20m) and a ground wire. Unless there is a problem with the radio, you should notice an immediate improvement in SW reception. Please also bear in mind that shortwave reception is always better after dark, due to atmospheric conditions. Best wishes and good luck!

There's a microswitch operated by the tonearm that cuts the power at the end of a disc. The switch contacts may need cleaning and/or adjusting. Another common reason for non-stop running is a 'leaky' switch capacitor. Thanks for commenting.

@@jimlatorra2693 Hello Jim - it sounds like your D20 needs some serious TLC! To work efficiently, the arm and auto-return mechanisms need to be ultra clean and correctly lubricated. The original lubricants harden with age and that may be what's causing the problems. Time to find a technician, I'd suggest. But obviously servicing is expensive and a lower cost option may simply be to find a replacement turntable. Good luck!

@@michaelscottcutler3627 Yes they are beautiful machines - good luck with yours. I think the main restoration items areas to watch for are the power supply (selenium rectifier and electrolytics) and tape transport (belt/clutches/brake/speed change).

Sounds great. Pity there isn’t so much to listen to on MW/LW these days - I fondly remember Dxing in the ‘80s, loads to listen to :)

Thanks for commenting. They're satisfying to restore, because you know they'll sound great when you've finished. You're right about MW/LW being empty. And SW - I miss (sort of) those endless farming reports and folk music etc from quirky stations in eastern Europe, middle East, China, Africa etc (after dark, on a long wire connected to a curtain pole). Happy days...

@@vintagear1269 I had a super collection of QSL cards (at least I think that’s what they were called). One was from the Voice of the Islamic Republic of Iran; I’d probably end up on some government list if I got mail like that these days! My furthest was from Radio Station HCJB which was in Ecuador I think. Yep happy times indeed
