1975 Honda CD 175 restoration
Short video of the restoration of a classic Honda motorcycle, a 1975 Honda CD 175. I bought one new when I was 17, so when I got the chance to buy one recently, I did and decided to restore it to 'as new' condition.

Short video taken while out and about recently. I changed the appearance of my 2016 CB1100 over the winter of 2019, and made it look like an old CB750-4. It's a great bike and I love it, even more so now that it looks more 'retro' than it did when I got it.

    Wow! What a difference. Great job. I've recently purchased a 1970 CD 175 with 3,200 original miles on it. But it's been sitting for 30 years. I haven't tried to start it yet. It looks similar to what you started with, but a little lest rust. The inside of the tank is rusty and I'm sure the carb needs cleaning. Would you be able to tell me where you get your filters, battery, carb rebuild kit, etc? I hope to get to the bike soon and would like to order the parts now. I'll have to check your home page to see if you have any video of your bike running.

      Search 'David Silver Spares' and CSMNL for parts. CSMNL use parts diagrams which you can get part numbers off to search more widely. In the UK there were lots of these sold in the 70's so second hand parts are out there, mostly! Mudguards seem to be unavailable. Good luck.

    Remarkable restoration...I am very impressed by your skill and the outcome I have the Australian farmbike version of the CD..a GL 175. Some of it was missing when it came into my hands, although what I got was in quite good condition considering what happens to bikes on the farm ! The electrical loom was present but most of the important bits down the battery end were missing. I have used CB parts to convert it to 12V...but have no idea where the starter solenoid and the blinker can are fitted and the general placement of the wiring loom.. This was not a problem till I fitted the standard single seat on the frame and found that the CB battery box cant be used unless a CB double seat is fitted...would ruin it ! The CB battery box has brackets for these parts... Would be grateful if you could tell me how these parts are fixed and where.. Cheers !

      Bernd, copy whatever you like. Many parts are pattern CB750-4 from David Silver Honda Spares (UK). Some were fabricated from scratch, some adapted to fit. You will need fabrication skills. Please read my replies to the other comments which will give you an idea of what is involved. Glad you like it! 👍🏻

    Amazing how much for the kit or transformation ?

    • @oldhelmet4213
      @oldhelmet4213 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can buy parts from Japan. Look at Samurider or Whitehouse. This modification was done mostly by adapting CB750 pattern parts to fit the CB1100, but that involves a lot of fabricating skills. I also did the paint and made the side panels from fibreglass so it is possible to do it yourself.

    This bike is stunning! Excellent paint job and adapting/building of the side covers, they look spot on! May I ask if you are running the stock pipes? The sound is quite more "lively" than in other on-board videos :) ... I'm definitely considering buying one of these bikes in the near future, when some of the Corona-related travel bans get lifted in Italy. Again, this is a remarkable job! Best wishes, 'Gene

    • @oldhelmet4213
      @oldhelmet4213 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello 'Gene, thanks for the positive comments. The exhaust system is completely stock. I use Akaso action cameras to record video, and a digital audio recorder inserted into a foam 'pouch' (to stop it rattling around) in the toolbox space, under the seat to record the sound. The sound recorder is therefore near the air intakes so you get some nice induction roar and no wind noise. I match the sound with the pictures in post production with editing software (not that difficult really, I'm not a tech guy!). I was unhappy with the sound quality that the cameras produced, so I searched TH-cam to see how other people improved sound quality. The sound comes from the way it's recorded, not from louder pipes. Regarding the bike, it is quite big and heavy and is certainly no 'missile' but it hustles along nicely and is all I need from a bike at my age (63). I love it and would recommend you buy one. Thanks again for the comments and I'm glad you like it. Cheers.

      @@oldhelmet4213 interesting, thank you for the technical details! It seems like a bike where you can get to 3rd or 4th gear in the twisties, then forget about the gearbox and just use the engine's torque. Looking up some figures, the 250kg dry weight does sound a bit intimidating: how does it behave on mountain roads?

    • @oldhelmet4213
      @oldhelmet4213 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@eugeniocollinassi.1548 I've never had a problem. Some of it depends on the individual I guess but it's like any other bike, it doesn't feel heavy when it's moving....so keep moving on the twisty mountain roads! And you're right, it's easy to ride on the torque and difficult to make it feel like it's going fast or being pushed/stressed.

      @@eugeniocollinassi.1548 Hi, it’s not 250kg dry that’s the wet weight. It’s really not that heavy a bike. It depends where you are coming from. I’ve had lots of really heavy bikes like Pan Europeans before. If you are coming up from say a CB500 then yes you will feel it. But it’s very manageable. I have two CB’s myself and they are lovely bikes.

      @@jfro5867 thanks for the reply! I had the chance to test drive one recently and it's true, when on the move it doesn't feel heavy at all, but I haven't had the chance to do serious corners during the test. Coming from a lighter bike (210/215 wet weight) I felt it a bit when manouvering
