Great performance! The conductor's baton is very exact. His changing of tempo at the end of each piece is very persuasive. The audience become quieter and quieter as the music goes on. Plus the camera work is good.

Damn difficult to get the right dynamics out of the orchestra. What sounds simple and natural to the listener is the result of the highest precision and concentration. Wishy-washy and dramatic are closely related here.

This is a true rehearsal, not staged. Somewhere further along in the full process, I would think, still adjusting several bowings and adding nuances to the parts. Celi never seems to get frustrated, he just keeps working away toward what he wants. In the final moments the trombones fully apply his direction to sustain their slurs. It's interesting to see so many relatively young players and several women. That was certainly not the case with the big American orchestras in 1965.

il en rajoute un peu...ça se fait d'ailleurs avec tous les autres chefs d'orchestre....aucun n'a réellement eu une direction aboutie du Boléro...soit ils sont lents...soit fougueux...soit dramatiquement au début...soit enragé à la fin....!

all this pretentious crap about 'this is not how you play Ravel' He's charismatic, he's idiosyncratic. he searches for beauty & has an aesthetic that tries to emphasise that great music, at it's best, transcends time itself. Love it or hate it, it provokes a desire to explore, to engage, to have an opinion. It envigorates & diversifies the Classical tradition, & our desire to engage with it, be it for or against his vantage point. Music, of all stripes, could use a few more people like that, as opposed to cookie cutter approval seeking sycophants, forming an ever decreasing circle of pointlessly virtuosic ossified arse-licking dullardry.
