Shouldve had prather in there too
Yeah that's fair!
@GarrettWongBowling make a part 2 "more pba pros secret to effortless hook"
Not the wrist. It's the fingers
8 hours + of practice a day
Simo is Cool😊
Simo is one of the greats!
@GarrettWongBowling yeah I enjoyed his Documentary
The pros hook the ball like that because it’s their job. They practice consistently and efficiently. They have access to the best coaches and every ball they could ever want. They hook the ball like that because while you’re going to work they’re bowling.
That's a great point!
The release isn’t hard to do …..controlling how much touch speed and axis rotation is what separates them
Many pros have a job. It's really the top 1% of pros (idk the exact statistic) who can do it as a full-time gig.
@@nicholas104 yea that might be the mental aspect
Sure, whatever you say.
Ring finger
Yeah, good freaking luck. 😂😂😂
First video that I have seen that explains it. Most of the time you see it in real time so fast. When you get on lanes it's a different story. Like the analogy of a weightlifter, when I try I hurt my wrist to roll the ball. Thank You!. 😊😊😊
I'm glad it finally clicked for you!
BRING SOME MARK ROTH
That's a great idea!
This is not true. The only two reasons why pros can hook the ball so easily are A) The equipment that they use is dynamically imbalanced B) there’s no oil on the back end of the lane
@jeffthebracketman Your average house bowler also throws a dynamically unbalanced ball and the oil patterns professionals bowl on are much more difficult in comparison to your average house shot. Every oil pattern has no oil on the backend otherwise nobody would be able to hook the bowling ball. I am specifically talking about what separates professionals in comparison to amateurs in regards to their physical game. Hope that helps!
Completely false.
@@GarrettWongBowling I wasn’t going to answer, but I changed my mind. I say this with the utmost respect. To begin with, I know quite a few players at home, who do not have PBA cards who can hook it that much on sport shots, as opposed to a house shot. My point was who could hook the ball this much before we had all this high-technology equipment, and before they stopped oiling all the way down the lane? I started bowling in the 60s, and nobody could hook the ball anything close to the way the players of today do. I understand that the players of today are the best of the best, and they’re taking advantage of the environment that’s provided to them, and as well they should; this is their livelihood… My only point was that it’s a marked difference in 2020 than it was in the 60’s and 70’s… All you have to do is watch films of the pros back then… Mark Roth was one of the first players to really hook the ball, and even he didn’t hook it as much as today’s pros… Just remember, when they held the first Plastic Ball championship, they made a point to mention that they put half as much oil on the lane as there used to be…
Wrong
@@jeffthebracketman At no point in the game's history did they oil all the way to the pins.
love Cooley's game
His physical game is awesome!
@@GarrettWongBowling I try to pattern mine to his, from the "older" cats and Kyle Sherman's from the "newer" cats
Bj Moore is so underrated
I 100% agree!
El secreto no es la muñeca, son los dedos. Debes presentar la bola de frente y al girar el rascado debe ser con dedos.
nice analysis!! 🎳
@shepiyo Thanks I appreciate it 🙏
And overstock
They only mention 2 targets but call this a 3 point system.
It's called 3 points because of your foot position, the target at the arrows, and the down lane target
Am I watching this wrong? So by doing some of this math here it’s saying I would stand at the 18 board if I’m on a 44 foot pattern and lay the ball down on the 12? I usually stand in the 25 or 27 board so this feels very weird. Right handed bowler here and this puts me far right today in the right side .
Why is EJs slow ball also faster than my all out cranking it
@garrettwongbowling , how do you adjust for the shift ? Just your basic 2 and ones off your starting point ?
This tip makes sense and never would have thought of it, thanks.
I’m a two handed bowler in 8th grade training hard to go to Webber university and I’m hoping I can play for the warriors bowling and football team
My Stealth Pearl ❤
It is not that easy. It takes a good amount of forarm strength and a good amount of control to do that.
Do you aim with the left shoulder or with the center of the 2 shoulders?
But as a 2 hander, i lose balance if i get too low,
Started bowling 5 yrs ago at 54. Ball release has been difficult for me and this video may have changed that. Thanks.
Thanks you
This makes perfect sense as to why the majority of the pros keep their opposite arm in front of them. My only concern is that if I extend my opposite arm in front then my swing could start going behind my back
Not true, you don’t need to swing up and above the shoulder. You should only bring up to what feels comfortable to you. I, personally, don’t use two fingers (one thing that was NOT shown) so my swing is low. Look at Jason Belmo, he also only buses two fingers and look how much spin he has.
You are right! There is no need to have a high backswing, the focus of this video is a effort-free downswing and it doesn't matter how high that swing is.
The hero we needed! And got! Thanks for this.
Glad it helped!
Mitch Hupe's release is such an unbelievably under appreciated work of art.
His hand is so impressive at the bottom of the swing!
i always wondered why they hook so much to begin with and create all that backspin lol. when you can strike just rollin the ball down the lane straight. that explosion upon contact is what knocks the pins all into each other and down. but hey, although i have gotten a few strikes in my life, im no bowler lol.
It's not really backspin. My understanding is that the ball slides down the lane, hooks, and then essentially accelerates through the pins, deflecting less and imparting more force into the pins vs just rolling down the lane straight. Like when a car drifts around a corner with wheels spinning and then hooks up and rockets off in one direction. Besides all of that, you are changing the attack angle (by hooking) to something more advantageous vs just hitting them straight on.
That's an awesome explanation!
@@GarrettWongBowling Thanks, just a bowling newbie here trying to absorb as much as I can. Great video btw!
A ball that deflects for a lucky strike in my arsenal? Yes.
perfect 🤣
You got a subscription from me man! No one has put it in such simple words before. Yeah it doesn't even look like these PBA guys are even trying!!!
Thanks for the kind words!
Have u ever wonder how many pro bowlers use peds
That's an interesting topic 🤔
V2 Pearl was one of the best! And the Gold Rhino Pro!
Oh those are some solid picks!
Timing is really important to achieve this weightlessness. If you don't have proper timing, it's very difficult. Your slide foot should be parallel with the ground mid-slide while your arm is parallel to the ground on your downswing.
You're absolutely right-timing is crucial for achieving that smooth, weightless motion. Keeping the slide foot parallel to the ground mid-slide and ensuring the arm is parallel on the downswing creates the perfect balance and flow. Without proper timing, it’s easy to lose coordination. It’s all about syncing the movements for that effortless feel.
Wish there was a super close, slow motion look, at the hand, start to finish
That's a great idea, I'll get around to it when I have time!
My mind is blown especially the lifting reference really put it into perspective
That's awesome to hear!
Dom Barrett?
Oh I can see that!
Spot on! First person that came to mind 😂 Keep it up !
Yeah Simo is a bit on the extreme end of spinal tilt since he almost gets parallel with the lane.
100%!
what if you’re a 2 hander?
Wish it was that simple 😕
Ahaha it's good to build habits one at a time!
prather is the dude to emulate. pure silk.
Absolutely!
Agreed. He has a silky smooth approach and his release is so clean. If I could emulate someone's form, it would be his or Pete Weber's. There are a few more I would like to add. David Ozio was so good and his style was so smooth. One of the most accurate bowlers I've ever seen. My other favorite would have to be Mike Aulby. There's probably more, but those are the guys, to me, who had some of the smoothest forms and effortless releases.
You can't pull something from behind.
By pulling I am referring to forced shoulder flexion from an extended position which "pulls" the ball down from the top of the swing instead of letting it fall because of gravity.
Earl Anthony would like a word…
🤣
I love your videos and channel also!!
Thank you so much!
OG Zen.
That ball is amazing!
@@GarrettWongBowling so so unique. Only issue I had with mine….I was one of the first to take a shot at it when it first came out before it got noticed…but it died out on me pretty quick which I was surprised about. Even resurfaced baked a couple times and still didn’t last. Was a shame. Hard to decide to grab another, with all these new balls coming out.
i dont lift so 11lb is the suitable ball for me, i cannot hold my hand underneath the ball for more than 3 seconds. is it impossible for me to hook a ball and i should start lifting? or you just have to keep practicing until you get the hang of it?
No worries about lifting! You don’t necessarily need to hit the gym to work on your bowling technique. For hooking a ball, it’s more about technique than strength. Using an 11lb ball is a great starting point, and as you practice, you’ll naturally build the specific wrist and forearm strength needed to control and hook it. Focus on your form and grip-practice releasing with a smooth, consistent motion, and aim to turn your hand slightly at release for the hook. Over time, this will become easier, and your strength will develop along the way. Keep at it, and it’ll feel more natural!
@ tysm! btw this was one of the best explanation I’ve ever seen as to how to hook a bowling ball. I’ll keep on practicing until eventually I can comfortably do it!
@@GarrettWongBowling you dont turn your hand, you go from palm up to shaking someones hand
What if your two-handed?
@cadenwaters5629 The concept is a bit different in the sense that you don't extend the opposite arm out in front. However, the shoulder is similar but doesn't require as much rotation!
Your shoulders should be parallel (or slightly less than parallel) to your target line at the top of the swing and perpendicular at release. A mental cue for this that I use is making sure my left shoulder (I'm right handed) rotates correctly with my spine at release - imagine someone stood behind you lightly pulling your left shoulder back and up as you release the ball. This guides the right shoulder down and through the release point, ending roughly square to your target line.
Can you explain a little more how do I make sure my shoulders are lined up
Great question! To keep your shoulders aligned in bowling, try to focus on keeping them parallel to your target line, which is where you want the ball to go down the lane. As you approach the line, imagine a line running straight from your shoulder through your arm to the pins. It can also help to slightly tilt your lead shoulder forward (for a right-handed bowler, that's the left shoulder) so you're aiming directly at your target. Practicing in front of a mirror or recording yourself can be helpful to make sure your shoulders stay in line. Keep working on it, and it’ll become second nature!
