Nice John!
Thanks bro this invasive species has been introduced to New Zealand 🎉. Or at least that’s what it said online somewhere.
Mega impressive
Thanks bro appreciate it
Hello John, today I found some live Great Mullen and harvested about 3 foot pole. Shaved off the outside leaves and green skin. What do I do now? How long to cure?..I have some good cedar also, and am excited to try.
@@Gator6Romeo nice bro 😎 Try collecting something just under a half inch they will shrink you’ll need the Woodie part of the stock do you need the walls of the flower stock to be thick something like 3/16 thick walls of wood depending on your weather, and your climate things can dry out fast or moderate or you can throw them in the car and they’ll dry out faster. It’s also good to practice straightening them of course by hand he will break some but everybody does use lots of pressure when drilling. Sometimes it can take a week.
@@Gator6Romeo try tending to any blisters with native herbs. From your area if you’re in to that kinda thing sometimes I use yarrow it literally has the power to heal
@@Johnhanddrill at the beginning of summer I stumbled upon a thousand along that lake dam in Colorado, but all were dead...Just waiting for this one to cure ,and Im gonna start drilling. I've been putting this off 40 years, better hurry!
@@Gator6Romeo bro you can do it. Just practice once a day if you have to control your dust collection try everything you will grow

I can see you have a meth addiction. Get help.
Is that a firepiston in the background? Just spotted it before you used it. Nice :)
Neat tool for fire starting 👍 its the pressure that generates the heat, right🤔

Great part of the country you live in. Great demonstration of that technique.
@@joesoutdoorplaces thanks bro appreciate it
Very impressive skill. I’ve only made three hand drill embers in my life. I’d never pull this off, even with a bow drill. I wish I could learn the technique of keeping my hands at the top of the spindle.

@@joesoutdoorplaces thanks bro it took some testing and training

I keep procrastinating when it comes to trying the fire plow. You make it look easy but I’m sure it isn’t.
@@joesoutdoorplaces it a great medium Of course finding a wood choice can be a a chore I found that young soft maples work You can use your body weight but it can a be a chore

That was fast.

@@Johnhanddrill I was canoeing at Sardis lake in Mississippi today and on the bank I saw, it couldn't be thistle berries, doesn't grow here. Got over closer and it was a dwarf sweet gum tree about the size of a bush, and the balls were red. It was on a little island that is submerged 3 months of the year, which probably accounts for the size and strange colors. Ha, I had just seen it in your video.
Veery nice!
@@robertelovsson8344 thanks bro
Few tries but you crushed it bro, great backdrop too 👊

This is hard to believe bc anywhere i have search says thiscant be done but yet youve done it. I was very exited to see this. Wow. Im going to try this with amadou ill let you know if it doeswork
@@BryanKoenig379 tinder is key does not usually work. But it’s possible to start a fire by attacking flint. Batu api
@@BryanKoenig379 There are natural Tinders that work in American i just don’t know what they are
Assuming you have great materials in both conditions, do you think fire plow or hand drill is more difficult?
@@Bduboutdoors definitely depends on condition. It the hot dry weather it is very reliable and practical ( fire plow ). Can be considered a bit more difficult but once you understand what your doing it comes easy Hand drill success can be achieved in lots of different conditions for success with hand drill use easy starting material u will see lots of people and combinations. Adjust from there. Fire plow is also easy once you find the material in your area. Here I’m using hardwood big leaf maple water shoots.
@@Bduboutdoors but yeah if you wanted to attempt the fireplow I think I put out a video or two where I explained how you have you decrease and then increase angle 📐 very slightly. Or some woods you must keep low angle if you’re wood characteristics are soft use same wood
@@Johnhanddrill thank you. I’ve not really pushed myself to work on fire plow yet, I’ve just been honing in on hand drill and using different materials, but I think it is important to know different methods. So this is one I think I need to learn. (I’ve Tried fire plow only a handful of times). Just curious do you think oak on oak will work for fire plow. I’ve used oak multiple times with bow drill and have a lot of oak around my house. I’ve got access to other wood just wanted your opinion.
@@Bduboutdoors maybe not oak but try a weedie looking tree that grows a lot like. Soft maples. Maybe 🤔 sumac. Or ceader. What kind water based wood do you have maybe willow but when practicing Watch dust control course dust can make it difficult to to get the ember Were are you
@@Johnhanddrillokay. Thank you. Got some dry willow I’m gonna work on. In SC. Pee Dee region.

New to me! What do you call this method of friction fire???
@@Level3Readiness wood fire saw. Comes from all the little islands around Indonesia, and in islands around Australia, it is similar to fireplou swiping back-and-forth over a notch. @@Johnhanddrill too cool, enjoyed it! Educational to boot 👊
@@Level3Readiness the dark brown dust can result in a ember I have found in dry weather cedar is reliable as long as it been dead for several years
@@Johnhanddrill cool, I can see that with cedar, amazing resource!
Loved the river bro! What a great backdrop for fire craft... The contrast is understated but having the roaring river and then the small ember 😂 what chance does that little guy have and in triumph the ember grows into a crackling flame! Great video and foraging too.... What?!?!?! 👊
