Greek historian here. The EAM organization was creation of and very much under the control of the KKE - the Greek Communist Party. However, they were very careful not to disclose their Communist leanings as an organization as to obtain mass appeal during the Occupation. They called themselves the "Democratic Army" (although this name was more frequently used during the Civil War after Occupiers left and EAM refused to fully disarm itself). In many cases, they either omitted their ideological leanings or just outright lied. If you read their pamphlets from the time, they called themselves a "patriotic" movement and sometimes even claimed themselves as non-ideological. Even their armed wing which did all the fighting - ΕΛΑΣ (ELAS) - was named to be close the spelling of ΕΛΛΑΣ (ELLAS) - how we Greeks call our fatherland in our language. These tactics worked, funnily enough, as EAM was by far the largest Resistance Organization in Greece during the Occupation. I should mention, however, that after EAM refused to disarm once the Occupiers left and their leadership turned the guns against the Greek Government, many members of the Organization left with the realization of their true ideological nature. With the outbreak of the Civil War, EAM-ELAS very quickly became a shadow of what they were, and this lead to their eventual defeat by the government forces. In short, EAM-ELLAS was very much a Communist organization, but they did not mention so out loud in order to gain mass appeal until they could no longer maintain the façade.

The funny thing is that in Greece, a large part of the rebels of EAM-ELAS and DSE were heroes or war veterans in the second world war. And most of the government were traitors who collaborated with the Nazis. In Greece, heroes became traitors and traitors became heroes. And I am not referring to the period of occupation, I am referring to the period of the Greek Civil War 1946-1949.
