Looking really good. I hope whoever watches these videos appreciates your approach to restoration. Love it!
@@CarmenCammarata thank you....and thanks for watching!
You put a lot of joy into your work and it results in this looking like it comes easy to you. Thanks for sharing the progress.
@@wtdonovan building these cars that were teenage dream cars for me really does seem more like fun than work to me. (usually) 😅
In the era of some people taking the Vice grip garage formula to making entertaining videos literally and dragging rotting hulks out of fields , getting it to something that you can technically call it “running and driving” and call it a hot rod or classic. It is really nice to see that you’re doing it right and pride in workmanship is alive and well. I really like how you are doing the multi part series videos. Best of luck with the build👍
@@MrWill73 thanks Will! I always pick cars that I think are cool, so that makes it easier to stay motivated to do all the work to bring them back to life again.
@@classicreaction5340 Yes! It is definitely a cool car! I was ready to a special order a 92 Formula 1LE with the TPI 305 5speed with the dual cats and performance axle ratio which I believe was called the “ Performance Package” option on the order sheet. I put a deposit to order it and everything. Even picked the dark grey color and then I got the insurance quote. It would have been $5k a year for insurance! Needless to say I couldn’t afford that much insurance along with the car payment even though I had 50% of the car as a down payment I just couldn’t do it. If I had ordered that car it would have been 1 of like a dozen built. I wound up getting a 90 Formula driven by a GM executive that were available to GM employees since my dad worked for GM. If you don’t know about those rare Formulas definitely check them out. They’re a cool car.
The rivets can sure be a P.I.A. You are correct about them being hard to try and drill.
@@billdaniels5957 I've got brand new cobalt drill bits and they wouldn't even begin to cut into the hardened shank inside those rivets. Thank God for cut-off wheels. 😅
I love 3rd gen birds. I have a 91 base with 5.0 tbi. I have to fix holes in the floor. I've been lazy. I watch this for motovation.
@@thebeez9487 me too. Both the Trans Ams and the IROC-Zs were like the ultimate cars to a kid growing up in the 80s like I did.
71 years old muscle car collector multiples of every American I almost got killed in your car we was racing a 396 and a 4440 charger nahant Beach we crashed into the wall get it all the way down the straight away bouncing off both walls was the 3rd of July the top was down there was open headers I'll have a GTO thank you prank call do you want to sell it
this makes me queasy to look at...I had the exact same car, same year, same color. Mine had T-tops. it was a cream puff. Bought it in '84 when it was just 5 years old for $6000. Sold it less than 2 years later. Kicked myself ever since.
Thank you for the video I will try to adjust on mine tomorrow without the shocks connected...
Why are guys like this afraid to tell us what they paid? Now if he paid 5k and plans to paint it, he is probably gonna break even. The www is full of bs sales prices on these cars
it maybe ignorant of me but I love the look in bare metal. Almost too bad you have to put some nice paint on it. He did a good job I hope your recovery turns out better than expected.
@@wtdonovan thank you, I'm feeling much better today with antibiotics in my system. And although I'm not a big fan of green, the deep pearl Emerald Green over gold on these 3rd gen T/As is one of my favorite color combos.
Great work Detective Jay! SVU-Special Vehicle Unit
@@7D9Z28 😂
I have the exact same car, minimal to no issues with TPI
@@mikecoolguy7150 yes the TPI is an awesome system when they are working properly. Nobody can deny the torque you can generate with just a little 305. Mine is doing great now that I figured out the issues.
Nice work.... It is going to look great when you are done with it!!!
My trunk lid is kind of high close to the convertible top is there a way to adjust that or the hinges are bent? If you could do a video on that it would be greatly appreciated, I know there are a few more fellow owners locally that would be interested as well.
@@simplymusclecars2139 when I remove the trunk I'll make a video showing any adjustments that can be made.
@@classicreaction5340 Thank you that would be great, I have looked everywhere can't find any info on it..
I worked in a body shop back in the day. Fenders didn’t come off - just pulled and mud thrown on in the early 80’s. A decade later, fender swaps were the go to.
@@thebigpicture2032 I didn't start working in the body shop until around 91-92. These days I definitely find a lot of 70s cars with drill holes and tons of filler in them. 😂
@@classicreaction5340 😂😂Yep some bondo palaces in those days.
My brothers hydro locked and blew up you are lucky. Can not wait to see how this turns out
@@peterkauffmann6800 luckily mine hydro-locked just when I turned the key to start it, so it wasn't at a high RPM or anything. Thanks for watching! 👍
I had a 90 Formula for 23 years. It could be either the coolant temperature sensor. If it is running super rich it may be due to the coolant sensor reading that it is below zero temperature that gets crazy readings so it goes all the way rich. It is a cheap fix that went on a few third generation F bodies. It may come and go but it’s worth changing since it is a maintenance part.
@@MrWill73 by the time I figured out the "new" injectors were the culprit I bought pretty much every sensor on the engine new. 😂 ......but at least I don't have to worry about any sensors going bad for awhile.
I have the exact same car with the same problem bought an aftermarket computer just need to install it..
@@simplymusclecars2139 I did new air filter, MAP sensor, coolant temp sensor, intake air temp sensor, plugs, wires, coil, O2 sensor, distributor assembly, and a new remanufactured computer. I couldn't figure out what was going on because fuel pressure seemed normal and the fuel injectors looked brand new. There was no check engine light either. Unbeknownst to me, once it warmed up, the fuel injectors started locking up and were literally dumping fuel into the engine. Took me a couple of weekends to figure out the issue but new injectors fixed it and it sure runs good now.
@@classicreaction5340 I think my car has a wiring problem, I have replaced everything as well with South Bay Injectors 19lbs. it runs rough and does a small back fire when warm at idle. It has headers no cat, previous owner had a 350 block installed on it and the heads re done. added a fuel pressure gauge in line and the pressure holds at 40psi. I bought a FiTech TPI system... It is my last hope in fixing it.. it still drives ok even the A/C works but it is running rich as well. Nice video keep it up...
@@simplymusclecars2139 when I changed my computer I got out a multi-meter and checked all the wires going into the computer to make sure they were all getting the right voltages. It was quite a process. One nice thing about the Fitech system is it's a stand-alone thing so it should bypass any kind of wiring issues your car could have.
@@classicreaction5340 Oh just saw this comment and wrote my comment when I first started watching because I had the same problem running crazy rich. Glad you solved it 👍
I like the 91/92 in green. Looks really good.
Me too!
Great stuff. Fair play to you. It’s a beauty.
@@kevindublin7790 thanks.....it will much more pretty once I'm done with it. 😉
cool man!
Any chance I can buy the paint w/ clear from you? I don’t trust myself for that part.
How much $$$ you want for it?
@@wwtf7180 this car was sold. Thanks.
Beautiful car, excellent work! I was wondering what you were going to do for a carburetor. That one looks like an Olds Quadra-jet. Obviously, it will work fine, but the Olds bowl vent is in a different spot than the Pontiac Q-jet, which is why I can tell it's an Olds Q-jet and not a Pontiac. The Pontiac Q-jet would need to use that 5/8" hole in the forward part of the hump in your Pontiac air cleaner base that you plugged up. The 5/8" hole in the Pontiac air cleaner base is needed with a Pontiac Q-jet because that's where the bowl vent sticks up on the Pontiac carb. The vent is tall enough that it has to go thru that hole and into the front area of the air cleaner base. That locates the vent forward of, and outside of the air filter, and so it is exposed to unfiltered air. It uses an o-ring at the base of the vent on the carb to seal between the carb vent and the air cleaner base to prevent dirt from seeping in around that 5/8" hole. The Olds bowl vent, like you have, is simpler. It's located further back, within the interior area of the air filter, so it gets filtered air, and doesn't need any clearance provision on the air cleaner like the Pontiac Q-jet does. You may already know this, and if so, maybe somebody else will find it interesting 🙂.
@@grand73am thank you. That carb is a Jet Performance Stage 2 Pontiac Quadrajet part #32102. I've used Jet Performance carbs on a few different Trans Am builds and I've always been very happy with them.
@@classicreaction5340 Thanks for the reply and part number! I looked it up, and see that they call it a Pontiac "style" q-jet, probably mostly because the fuel inlet is in the front. Pontiac, Olds, and Buick use a front inlet, differentiating them from Chevy that uses the side inlet. That's not an actual original Pontiac q-jet, because all original Pontiac q-jets have the different, larger, bowl vent further forward on the top of the carb, as I described before. If you Google some pics of original Pontiac q-jets, you'd see what I mean. I think Jet is combining parts from Olds and Pontiac, using the Olds top (air horn) in this case, maybe even the body, but with Pontiac linkage on the primary throttle shaft so there's proper clearance with the Pontiac intake, and you can hook the cables up correctly for a Pontiac. I have a number of Q-jets that I've rebuilt for my collection of 70's Pontiac, Olds, and Chevy projects, so that's why I know the differences. I used to restore Classic cars for a living, similar to you, but retired now and working on my own cars for fun. I'm not criticizing or denigrating your carb, as it looks beautiful and seems to be well built, and starts and runs great. Can't ask for more than that. Nice to buy one ready to go and works right. I was just curious about the differences I saw. Thanks!
Why do you have an earlier tach in there? Those later engines didn't rev that high anymore..
@@Tom-cp6yj those 8k tachs were used up until 1975. It was already in the car when I bought it and worked fine so I kept it.
Nice! I got one identical to it, and 4 others
Great read, you got any other stories?
Beautiful car. I’ll admit I’m partial to Fords but I can certainly appreciate a guy who does amazing work! Looking forward to the videos. I just finished up floor pans on the passenger side of my 76 Formula. Now onto the drivers side. I certainly have a new respect for the guys who cut, weld and grind these rusty cars back to life. I repaired a rusty old Datsun 20yrs ago but seems a little harder than I remember. Congrats on the rare find! Let the dust start flyin.
You could have put Michael Jackson md Elvis to sleep without pills
Not many were made by this model year and a ASC is even rarer.
@@CarmenCammarata right....only 663 convertible Trans Ams were produced in 92, and it's hard to tell how many of them survived. Only a couple hundred had the factory CD player so it's a pretty rare bird for sure.
Can’t wait to see this one come around! I agree this is a beautiful color combination
very cool car, great candidate for restoration
Thanks for your video. I though it was just a matter of laying it on top. So I have to do fabrication if I want one mounted on top.
@@will-nc1zyyou're welcome. Yes you have to cut out the small triangle shape area for the scoop to lay flat on the hood. Very easy to do.

Did you figure out how to get the tint?
I dont get it can someone say me ?@@firemanruss
How did you support the rear spoiler to paint it? Also did you paint it with the pedestals mounted on it?

Nice work! Just curious, after you got done with that probably 6 feet of lap weld, how much warping and distortion did you have to deal with? Thank you.
@@midnighttutor thank you. Like I said in the video, I weld only a half inch at a time, skipping around to different areas around the entire joint and never letting the heat build up. So hardly any warping or distortion at all.
