    Beautiful video! Reminds me of my great aunt. Her last car was a 62 Chevy impala. Lived barely a mile outside of her small town. Her kids made a decision to have her give up driving. I guess she got pissed. “ my car knows it’s own way to and from town” lol she was 99 at the time. She lived another 7 years. She was so cool. She let her granddaughter and I take out their Polaris snowmobiles when I was about 11 , her granddaughter was 9. She could ride too! She’ll be like her grandma. And this woman in your video! I know my mom would’ve passed on the invitation to take a ride. I think.

    After Packard stopped making their V8 in 1956 why didn't another manufacturer buy the tooling and continue production? From what I understand the Packard V8 was still very early in its production "maturity" and had many years of bore & stroke enlargements ahead of it. This engine could have become somebody's big-block. One other question. Why didn't all the independents share development of engines & transmissions? Especially in the early 1950s when everyone was in a rush to produce a modern V8? Ditto/the same question pertaining to the Packard Ultramatic transmission.

    • @oldguy2082
      @oldguy2082 ปีที่แล้ว

      The packard v8 was very heavy and was designed to be punched out to close too 500 Cid, at the time Packard closed few companies wanted an engine that heavy or wide. Also there was trouble with the oil pump, though after the fact companies developed a pump that solved that issue. I think it was Kanter ? In NJ that for years advertised an improved oil pump for the Packard V8. In hindsight the Packard V8 could have made a good medium truck engine if punched out or even if lightened up with aluminum parts a good performance engine for large sedans. The other issue was that the other major US manufacturers already had V8 engines by that time and their engines were lighter in weight than the Packard motor.

    • @packard5682
      @packard5682 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem with the oil pump was that it was a duplex pump. It had a vacuum pump for the wipers at the bottom end of the oil pump and there was a pot metal or white metal plate between the oil and the vacuum pump. This plate would warp over time and the oil pump would start pulling in air and the oil pressure would drop and starve the top end of the engine. I had mine rebuilt by a company in Texas and they machined a steel plate to replace the pot metal plate and eliminate the vacuum pump all together. Solved the oil pressure problem.@@oldguy2082

    I'm sure it had the straight-8 engine, did it have the "Ultra-Matic" transmission? Air conditioner?

    • @hotrodadventures1212
      @hotrodadventures1212 ปีที่แล้ว

      It did have the Ultra-Matic 2 speed auto which worked fine. Inexplicably no A/C, though it was an option in 1953. . And this was originally a Baltimore Funeral Home car!. That must have been a warm day for a mourning family in a black Limo in Baltimore in the humid Summer.

    How wonderful! Reminds me of the day I came home with a gold 1966 Imperial Crown Sedan. My gramma wanted to go for a ride, and as we approached the car she stood in front of the rear wheel and waited for me to open the rear door, as the rear was the only proper place for a Lady to be seen.

  • @oldguy2082

    It's a very impressive vehicle and I've only seen one of these at a Packard meet many years ago. Still, from a technical point of view, a limousine usually has a division window separating the driver's compartment from the passenger area, which is why it was referred to as an executive sedan.

    • @jeffgolden253
      @jeffgolden253 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct. This is not a limousine. It's a 7-passenger sedan, with jump-seats for passengers #6 and #7 (or, if there are 3 in the front bench seat, #7 and #8). But my question is why was MIL only allowed on to the jump-seat? Why couldn't she sit in the plush rear "executive" seat?
