Follow the adventures of Tim, Shannon, Reggie the 1995 Range Rover Classic, and Ducky our mascot as we drive all over the world! We are originally from Seattle, Washington, in the United States, and after driving around Australia for one year, backpacking Vietnam for 1 month, driving South America for 2 years, being stuck in Honduras for 7 months during the Coronavirus pandemic border closures, and racing through Central America, we are back in the United States.

Our Skoolie Conversion - Part 5 - Rooftop Solar Installation
Hello to all, and happy Memorial Day! Sorry we had to skip a week, but we have been working 24x7 to move into our bus. Welcome to Part 5 of our conversion of an International School Bus into our Tiny Home. In this episode we start installing our rooftop solar panels, frame out the bathroom, and epoxy our beautiful live-edge wood countertops.
Tim is such a natural builder, and he has been teaching me to do some tasks so that I can be of more help. I think we are also pretty creative, so if you are renovating a school bus, or thinking about renovating one, watch this video for repair, construction, and design inspiration!

We are now settled (however temporarily) in Colorado, near Tim's family. In between looking for new jobs, we are tearing Reggie down in anticipation of rebuilding him completely for our next overland adventure. This week...

I have my second JB Evasion. Rock solid quality. The fan is great but needs replacement after three years. Form me (190cm) the tent is a bit too short. If you travel to hot areas this tent is not the right choice as the windflow is not great leaving the heat in the tent making sleeping almost impossible. The clamps are not very finger friendly.
Thanks for making this vid! Im a 30 year old, so tired of looking at new vehicles. Im hell bent on getting a RR classic and want it to sit just like the stance on yours.
Hi ! i love the box at the top of the tent, what is the size and brand of this toolbox thanks greetings from Costa Rica

Hey im really liking your set up, im aspiring to do similar with my 94 300tdi. I am particularly interested in your swing away at the rear. Could i ask where you had that from or was it a custom made one. cheers Simon
Che snorkel monti?
Thank you for your video. Actually, I like your video so much your information was so valuable for me. I would like to ask you what is the maximum speed that you can drive when the tent is folded on your truck.
Hi guys thanks so much for this video. Love your roof rack build😂 and being from western Australia love the tip about the extra brackets in the corners. Just wondering how you found the tent in big rain events?
Love your set-up. Used to have a classic.
hello my friend can you tell me or send me the link or box you have in tend up ?
Yes... buy a winch!!! Im tired of using my winch to rescue unprepared vehicles....
What year is this bus? How did you get lucky enough for an MD3060 Allison Auto? Some are afraid of it due to the electronic control panel. I'll take it all day long everyday. With that control panel, you can also read the codes yourself on any failures. Sure it's expensive if it ever needs replaced. Our fleet of wreckers, we have 3 on our 2010-2012 model trucks and none of them have yet to need a control pad and are in the 280,000-300,000 mile range and transmissions have never been rebuilt or replaced. 1 of them did get a new valve body and it wasn't cheap, but I honestly think we got taken and it wasn't needed. I think it needed solenoids, not a whole valve body, but hey, I'm not the boss and they have plenty of money so let them waste it. But yeah, always use the very expensive fluid it calls for and maybe a fluid and filter change every 100,000 miles and the transmission is likely to be the least of your worries. And if you so choose, it may be worth it to put less wear on your engine, and maybe even more mpg, it might be worth it to take it to Allison and have them unlock the 6th gear if it's not already done. On our rollbacks, we do have all 6 speeds.
JMO, most Blue Bird busses I've seen, the rear fender wells are a thick heavy plastic. And they look bigger than yours too. So I'd see about sourcing some from a used Blue Bird and they are just screwed to the floor. Makes for an easy quick fix and you won't have to worry about them rusting in the future. You're likely building over them anyway so they won't be seen and be plenty strong and air tight.
Well after watching the ending, I guess you've handled that now. But now you'll know if it rusts in the future. Hopefully it won't. Look like did a great job. If you haven't I'd get some of that primer/sealer painted on the bottom around the wheel wells also.
How much you pay for it tell me the price that's? I wanna know the price price price stop talking nonsense and give me the price
Like the tool you used to get the ceiling profile.
That was one of Tim's quirky tools. He watched a lot of videos and decided he needed something easier, haha. He hates buying new tools unless it will save him a lot of time :) Thanks for watching!
Nice to see another adventure a foot.
Yes, we are very excited for the next adventure :) Thanks for watching!
Gaffer tape on the zipper tabs stops the jingling sound on windy nights.
That is a great idea! Shoulda done that sooner.... :)
Great review mate honest and direct thanks
Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for watching!
What an adventure! Did something close to this back in the early 1970's from Ecuador to Peru. I've never forgotten that trip.
Hello Deserts! That's awesome - we sure loved our trip. It is definitely a life-changing experience. Thanks for watching!
Doing basically the same thing on mine right now. Thanks for the recon.
Good luck Okie Rover! We love our RRC. Set them up right and they are awesome :)
Great review thanks. Little off topic, but what's the process for moving your 4WD around the globe for all your adventures?
Hello Ian - sorry for the delay in responding! We shipped Reggie from Los Angeles to Brisbane, Australie, then from Melbourne, Australia to Montevideo, Uruguay, then from Colombia to Panama. You can either choose to get a lot of help from shipping agents, which would then cost more, or just pay for the basic shipping container (or RORO) and do all of the paperwork and customs yourself. We have done both, and it really depends on the country and temporary import laws as to whether you think you might need more help or not. Hope that helps!
Love the build. But man ya need to speak up!
Haha! Yes, Tim is normally loud, but for some reason when I turn on a camera he gets camera shy and speaks softly :)
Thanks for the videos. Really enjoyed the series so far. Hope to see more instalments and progress soon
Glad you like them! We do have another Reggie video in the works, and a Skoolie video :)
What Box is that on your roof? I started looking around for boxes that could carry on there for example sidewalls of the awning or stuff like that so it doesn't have to be carried inside the car. We also own a Grand Raid but in M. And yes drainage only works if your located uneven a tad so the back is lower than the front. Indeed had a few showers that way - which is cool of course in summer :D
Actually, the box on the roof is a rifle case :) It fit perfectly and is waterproof - it has been amazingly sturdy.
Hello, how to you protect yourself from the rain getting in and out of your pop up tent? Do you put up awnings?
Hello Jo - no, we did not have any type of awning for the tent. If we were headed up to the tent and it was raining, we usually tried to wait for a break in the rain. But if the rain never let up then we just took a towel up with us, and scurried up, haha. You just have to keep the windows on the rain side (if it is driving a particular direction) closed.
@@planetoverland thank you. 😊
A 12k winch would be a better choice for the winch on your vehicle. 10k is the max and that is for a limited amount of time that it is actually running underload. An engineer told me that if something has a duty cycle that is listed you should never go over 75% of it max duty cycle, if you want it to last. Put in a different way. fully loaded vehicle 7k on a 10k winch is close to the best use of the winch. now add an incline and a longer pull on a very hot day and you now are close to or over the rated capacity and or the best duty cycle of the winch. Not only that, but think of it in terms of it's life span, will the 10k winch in your weight usage and capacity out last a 12k winch under the same conditions, all things being equal, the answer would be no. My experience with winches is they work great and they seem like enough winch until they do not. When the cables are hot and melting the insulation (ever feel them after a long pull) carry a snatch block to double the pull strength, at half the speed is generally the way we do it in the USA. Not that much more money for more pulling power and life of the product. Why, because you have not mentioned that you came to a spot where the winch was seriously working hard, and it really needed to not fail or else. I bet your careful and try not to be in those spots, but you just never know.
Hello John - we would have loved to have a 12K, but sometimes you have to work with what you have :) The 10K worked great the few times that we had to use it - Reggie is pretty mountain goat-ey.
That flap is a vent for the fresh air in system, not the doors slamming.. lol Though I guess it could be helping with that.. where did you go. 1 year. Hope all is well!
Hello John! Yes, it has been a long time. After the covid fiasco we had several family medical emergencies that have taken a lot of time, plus finding jobs, etc. We are hoping to post an update video next week though! Thanks for hanging in there...
please get a new mic setup
Omigosh, I wish. We do not have a person mic - that is something we do need to purchase.
Hello! Nice rig. Wondering where you found that little latch to hold your upper tailgate down! Thanks!
Hello George - I believe that Tim made that, but I could be wrong. I will ask him!
Hey guys, hope all is well. How is the build coming. curious about the pop top. I have a RRC myself, and wanted to add a pop top.
Hello Grandpa - well, we had to pause Reggie's rebuild because we are renovating a school bus so we can live in it as we travel around the US - we have a couple of family medical issues that require us to stay local for awhile. But we will get back to Reggie as soon as we can - we still have the same plans for him!
I just found you guys. Good content! I’ve got a family of 4 so finding a good vehicle has been challenging. I’d like to be contained, ideally without pulling a trailer. For touring the USA, Canada, Alaska and Central America, possibly South America in the future, I’m leaning towards an older diesel RAM 2500 with a topper on the bed and some ground tents. If the weather is terrible, we could always Airbnb it. Thanks for the references to other overlanders. I’ll check them out.
Thank you, and thank you for watching! We've found that any vehicle can work, as long as it works for your family and requirements. There really isn't a best vehicle. We like an older vehicle, as Tim is vehicle-savvy, but others do it in newer vehicles. And yes, you can almost always find an AirBNB or motel :)
Great effort. Really enjoyed your adventures and Reggie's rebuild. I'm planning building a classic RR expedition for my daughter for her grand European tour next year before she goes to Uni. Any news on Part 3?
Hello Moo - thanks for watching! I have started Part 3, but we wondered if we should do a short update video first - we've been busy lately with work and settling my parents back into their house here, but I am hoping to put out either Part 3 of Reggie or the update video in the next couple of weeks! Fingers crossed :o) We kind of shifted work to the Skoolie, so Tim is not working as much on Reggie as he would like, unfortunately.
What about the solar panels? Which ones did you use and isnt there a problem when it rains of the water pooling on top of the solar panels, effectively making them be underwater, doesn't that short out the panels?
Hello ToeFace! Per my husband: "I don't remember the brand but they were some cheap Chinese ones. They were flexible, not framed, and they were easy to take care of." We were in some very monsoon-y places and never had an issue with water pooling on the solar panels themselves - our rain issue was more with the dip in the tent roof itself. Thanks for watching!
This is the 1st video I saw of your channel. Loved it and subscribed. This is an proper review from an long term user. Much beneficial for everyone.
Welcome aboard! Thank you so much for watching and subscribing. Sometimes it is hard to switch Tim from building to reviewing mode, but he really does have good technical insights on the gear we use :)
How much dose it weigh
Ok, Tim says that the exact weight would be on the James Baroud website, but it is around 200 lbs. Thank you for watching!
I'm worried we haven't seen another video!!
Sorry! Life's craziness happened - both of our mothers had medical issues that required a lot of travel and time, and we stopped making videos. But we are starting back up soon with another Reggie Rebuild video and/or a Skoolie Build video, so stay tuned!
@@planetoverland No need for apologies. I was just hoping you hadn't given up on the ol Rover.
Can the doors be fully zipped up or do they have Velcro only at the bottom? Thanks
Sorry for the delay in answering: ours only had velcro at the bottom, so they did not zip all the way around.
How does this tent handle heavy rain and storms? There are so many zippers in which rain can pass trough.
Sorry for the delay in answering: we NEVER had any rain come through the windows or doors when they were closed, and we had some monsoon weather in Honduras. If you have the windows open to the screens then you might get some dampness IF the rain was falling slanted or sideways, which does sometimes happen, but we often had our windows open to the screens, even while it was raining!
very thorough and informative review thank you !
Glad it was helpful!
you dont ever give tips guys the guy was scamming you both for that
Sorry for the delay in answering: Do you mean the border crossing and paperwork? Honestly, each situation you have to take as it comes to you - you treat a situation with an angry official different than an official who is just trying to get some more money off of you. That is why we don't give concrete tips, bc they cannot be used for all situations. We do try to tell the story, though, and not leave out the bad or hard parts, so other travelers can see what might happen. Thanks for watching!
Had a 1995 lwb county …my favorite of all time…I always appreciated the quality of this car as very capable off road , despite the overall luxury items…i would love to build one that is pure utilitarian…I would like to know what kind of wheels are on yours…
Couldn't agree more! Reggie is an amazing and simple vehicle (other than the electrics, haha), and he served us well while traveling. If you mean the actual wheels, we have Wolf Wheels, I believe, and we have changed tires over the years, but like Cooper tires the best. Thanks for watching and good luck if you build your Land Rover!
You guys are great, found you through Dirt Sunrise and being a rover guy myself, had to subscribe! Love the RRC! Are you guys still in Colorado? Will be up there in Ouray and surrounding areas for a couple weeks end of July for the national rally and side trips. If you are ever in Texas, look up the Texas Rovers club!
Hello Chad - sorry for the delay in answering! We just moved from Colorado down to Arizona to stay with my parents after my mother's cancer treatment. From here we are hoping to get jobs in Death Valley for the winter, so we may not be back to Colorado for a little while. Thanks for subscribing - we will be back with more videos about Reggie and our new Skoolie build shortly!
Note there is no warranty for James Baroud roof top tents in Australia that are ‘second hand’ ie if you are not the original owner. Therefore, a rooftop tent sold to another person is not so valuable due to you are left on your own to repair any issues as JB were very clear they are not interested. Read the fine print…..
Very interesting Bede, we did not know that. I am not sure what the policy is in the United States, but honestly, ours was so well-made that it should last another 5 years easy with no issues other than the zippers breaking in half, which doesn't impact the actual sealing of the doors and windows. Thanks for watching!
Does any road dust penetrate the seam of the tent??
Sorry for the delay in answering: if you mean while the tent is locked down, then no, we never had road dust get into the interior of the tent while driving. We even had tons of bull dust in Australia and it never got all the way into the tent while it was locked closed bc the seal made by the bedding and overhang of the tent top lip prevents it. Thanks for watching!
What kind of a wife would not only be interested in her husband's endeavor, but film and possibly edit videos?? A super, terrific wife!
Hello Charles - sorry for the delay in answering - I agree!!! Hahahaha. I am a great wife :o) I do have to say that while the traveling was extremely challenging, I did really enjoy it, and I'm really glad we did it! Thanks for watching!
I echo this. And to let him use the kitchen!!! That’s called pure love there
can you say how is in the winter if you use it ?
Hello Zenith - sorry for the delay in answering... There IS a winter option that you can buy that you hang up on the inside of the tent walls, but we did not have that. We were in some severely cold places (not for super extended amounts of time), and if you do not have the cold weather wall treatments, make sure to have something like a Rumpl or other thin down blanket, bc it DOES get cold up in the tent overnight. We did not have a heater up there either, FYI. But we found with 1 Rumpl we were good 85% of the time in cold weather, and then we had a second Rumpl that we could use if it was super cold.
Great video, thank you
Thanks for watching!
Great videos, how is Reggie and you both these days?
Hello Pedro - sorry for the delay in answering! Reggie is great - Tim is still working on the new interior, so that is taking a lot longer than expected, with what life threw at us in the last few years. We do use him regularly on drives, so he gets his exercise :o) We are good as well - just moved down to AZ from CO to help my parents for a few months. We are building out a Skoolie to live in, and hope to get jobs with Xanterra and rotate between national parks starting this winter. Hope all is well with you too, and thanks for watching!
