The Hardest Thing We’ve Ever Done. Part 1
Solvieg and I do our first ever multi-night backpacking trip. And we do it in the Grand Daddy of all backcountries, Yosemite National Park! Was it a mistake to do our first one in Yosemite? Should we have chosen an easier place and route?
We trained physically, geared up and gained a lot of theoretical knowledge. How did it all take and go? We put the theory to practice and go for it in some of the most remote and beautiful backcountry in the world.
We saw only a handful of other people the entire time! We were truely on our own!
This is part 1 of a 5 part video series about this adventure. We hope, through our experience, that you discover if this is something you can do. If you have no intention of ever taking this on, we hope you enjoy the beautiful scenery and adventure. Because it was an adventure!

Bear spray changed our outdoor lives forever. Overland vs National Parks. Yellowstone, Grand Teton
มุมมอง 35K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
Solveig and I set out to do a Montana overland adventure and we never actually ended up in Montana! Instead we ended up exploring Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. Bear spray was the catalyst that rerouted our adventure. It was such a blessing because we eventually had the hike of a lifetime (for us) in Yellowstone National Park. It gave me a whole new appreciation for hiking and back...

This is part 2 of our Meadow Lake, Tahoe National Forest Overlanding Adventure. We had the entire lake to ourselves. We found one of the most stunning campsites, I would argue, in the world. Locals told us of little known 4000 year old petroglyphs hidden deep in the Tahoe National Forest. They gave us clues to find them and we set out on the hunt. What a great video , thanks for sharing it, learnt so much from it
Great Video!!!!!!!
I just did this hike too and yes that first day is brutal on the legs/knees
I really appreciated your positivity! I felt so related to your wife (I don't even want to talk after such a strenuous hike), but even if you are also tired af, you still put a camera there and show us how you set up you tent, and get in the river~ thx man!
You’re welcome and thank you so much!! It was one of the hardest things we’ve ever done. But I would do it all over again! Enjoy your adventures!
Too hot. I bet the temperatures would be better suited in October. :)
Probably!
Great video! So, if I've got two little kids... that just want to cruise around in our landrover on some trails... and 100% NOT encounter a triple black diamond, is HH a good spot? Seems like maybe going with the group would not be a great idea as they seem to go on the more advanced terrain? Welcome any thoughts...
Do you think your pinsu roof rack can handle the 270xt max version of the awning or will the trunk roof get in the way??
In my opinion the rack could handle it, but the tailgate would get in the way. I thought of the 270 but the 180 has been perfect for us. So easy to deploy and put away.
Good job guys, i know the feeling of getting to your destination after a long walk being in the Army!
Thank you! Id imagine some of those Army walks could be brutal! Respect for your service to our Nation! may God bless u!
Dude I give you props lol. I would love to do a backpacking trip like this. But I would die!!! Such beauty everywhere
Haha! Yeah it was pretty grueling but so worth it! If my fat out a shape behind can do it, almost anyone can! Lol.
@@Craving.Outdoors that’s awesome!!!! Ps I threw you an invite to a trip at the end of the month.
@@sliceoflife8905ill go look and check it out. Thx!
Excellent video. Solveig is a real trooper. Way to represent Toyota with “normal” mods and what is probably a heavy load on that chassis.
Thank you! Our 4runner is all beat up but always there for us! Solla says thanks and hello!
Duuuuuude, you need to dump that Control business. It gets old, fast. Learn to chill and go with the flow.
My grandma used to stay during the summer when she was a little girl mining in poker flat. I've spent most of my life in those hills hunting and exploring
Is the swimming hole called “Royal Gorge” or “ Palisade Creek”. Doesn’t seems close to Weaver Lake thought. Did you go south on the 80 ?

How are these holding up after a couple years?
Hey there! They’re holding up great. One has been hanging as the tape wore out or something. Thats been around a year and I keep forgetting to fix it. The only issue is the switch, believe it or not. Sometimes it wont latch so I wiggle it to latch and stay on. But the lights themselves and wiring all are great. And thats through lots of mud and water crossings and dirt! Thanks for watching!
What’s the brand/model of the wind fairing you have on?
Hi! By wind fairing, do you mean the awning or perhaps the little upslope in front of the iKamper? Awning is a 180 XT from thebushcompany. Upslope came with our Prinsu roofrack. I have an install video for both if you’re interested. Thanks for watching and have a great weekend!
Aanwers every question I had about the skyhcamp mini. Thanks.
You’re welcome! Glad we could help and enjoy your adventures!
You two are a cute hoot! 😂🎉🎉 Loved your adventure. Sorry you had to suffer through bear spray and mosquitoes. Hoping for happy trails and travels for you! Enjoy!
Haha! Thank you very much! Thats so nice! We just came home today from our first multiday backpacking trip in Yosemite. That was fun! Lots of Mosquitos but no bear spray this time so was okay:). Thanks again! Stay tuned for the Grand Canyon of the Tuolemne adventure coming soon!
I enjoyed this video so much! The appreciation for the area was so evident. And the fact he was won over made a perfect ending.
Thank you so much? Those are such kind words. Thanks again!
Dang would love to hang with you guys

Haha! Solveig is definitely an angel for putting up with me for 30 years!
Great video, the music was too loud and covered a lot of your descriptions😂
Thank you! Sorry about the music. I’ll see what I can do and make sure to mix better next Time. Thanks again for watching!
Thanks great video!! You saved my day/ journey
Awesome and thank you! Glad it helped. Curious how it helped you if you dont mimd sharing? Thanks again!
Loved this. Now what's the official definition of a hike vs a stroll??? LOL
Thank you so much! I guess the definition is if we are in enough pain afterwards! LOL. At the end of the month, we are doing a 5 day backpacking trip in the Yosemite backcountry. I think that one should qualify! Haha! Thanks again for watching and enjoy your adventures!
New subscriber here! I love Yellowstone! Have only been there once (in my 20’s). Now I am 70. Hope to go back before it’s too late. You two were brave taking that hike without bear spray and no other hikers around. I would have been nervous. Bravo.
Hi and thank you! I hope you can get back there too! Its really an awe inspiring place! Believe it or not, we never imagined we would be the only ones on that trail because it was so busy below! I hope you get out there and let me know how it goes if you do. Thanks again!
Your wife is right and has balls compared to you
Can you link the portable toilet, please.
Hi and here you go. Highly recommend the kit. Solveig takes the privacy tent with on backpacking trips cause its small and light. We absolutely love this thing and was a game changer for my wife! instaprivy.com
As long as it isn't always the same person giving in, compromise can be a wonderful thing. Look at your newfound love for hiking! Beautiful scenery!
Well said and thank you! We will be married 30 years this Oct so we both have had our share of compromise! Haha. Thanks again for watching and enjoy your adventures!
Haha well that sucks eh lol I’ve tasted bear spray ,, it’s not so good lol
Haha! Yeah. Wasnt fun at the time but it led to a fantastic time. If it wasnt for the bear spray, I would have never given Yellowstone a chance. But dang, Yellowstone was something. And that hike is what made me a backpacking fan. So Solveig is really happy about that! Lol. We are doing our first backpacking trip at the end of the month in Yosemite. 5 days in the backcountry! My wife has been trying to get me to do it for years. Now Im looking forward to it! Haha. I cant imagine how bear spray tastes! Thanks for sharing!
in early June of 2009 we took a trip to Yellowstone. Our oldest son was 6 at the time. We stopped inside the park about 15 miles in from the west entrance to look at the river and view wildlife. While we were viewing wildlife I made a joke to the family do you have your bear spray. My wife would later find an old video of how this ordeal. Anyway our oldest son ran back to our pickup and you could hear in the distance him yelling Bear Spray. We had it tucked underneath the front seat of our pickup still in the wrapped clear plastic bag. He opened it and discharge it all over him inside our pickup the windows rolled up. The ranger & estimated by the weight he discharged 3/4 of the can. He was completely orange, couldn't breath, couldn't see. Somehow I found a spot that got cell service and called 911. They dispatched an ambulance from Old Faithful which would take 60 minutes. In the interim some off duty rangers in a Jeep heard the call and got to us sooner. We ended up stripping him down and putting him in the cold river to help wash it off. My wife went with him in the ambulance to the nearest facility where he would get a shower and they would give him new clothes to wear. In the interim I loaded up our two youngest children (4 & 1) and as soon as I turned on the pickup the AC/heater blower kicked on and blew that bear spray all over everybody, so I had to get everyone out, calm them down and clean them up from the bear spray, remove their seat coverings. That stuff was so nasty it ate the paint on the dash of my 2004 Duramax. It took months for it to finally all go away. The rangers who stopped by to help each had their own bear spray story. One of them was hiking in the backcountry and heard a hissing sound from his backpack. When he opened it up he got sprayed and there was no water around for miles. The other one discharged spray at a grizzly only to have the wind change directions and it sprayed him.
Wow. What a story! Your poor son! That must have been quite the ordeal. I couldnt imagine if that would have happened to our son! And then the a/c!! When the can of ours that broke open finally stopped, it was overnight, we put it into a triple ziplock bag. I swear to God I thought it ate thru one of them. The bag was completely red! At the visitors center where we stopped, they had a bear spray break open and spray all over the inside of the building just a week before we got there! Rough times then, for all of us, but so glad we can laugh about it now! GREAT story! Thank you for sharing!
What was the date/time frame of your trip, YS didn't seem crowded. Planning on a trip in 2025
Hey there! It was July 8-10, 2023. It was pretty crowded. Some tips. Start early. Crowds seemed to be greatest between 12-3ish. Bring food and avoid cafeterias if possible. The park is huge so there is a lot of space there. Lots of less popular places to visit also like our hike. Totally busy below, but we didnt see a single person on our hike and it was so beautiful. We went to Old Faithful Area around dinner time and it wasnt crowded at all. Maybe sight see in the am. From 12 to 3 or 4, go on a great secluded hike (our big hike near the end of the video took around 6 hours and was a little over 7 miles) and then do more sight seeing around dusk, when no one is there. Enjoy your adventure and feel free to ask more question. You can also DM me on Instagram. Take care!
What is your voice so much different than the commentator's voice? Was there a third person with you guys? 😂
Lol! I dont know how to answer this! My voice is my voice. The VO is recorded on a Manley Ref C microphone into an SSL micpre then into a hardware Distressor Compressor and eventually into my Avid ProTools HDX recording system in my studio. So studio recording vs crappy camera mics while run and gun shooting?
Dude. Your videos!!! 🔥 amazing journey and editing like always !!!
Thank you!
There's also a Cemetery about 1/4 of a mile from where were camping at to check out as well. I been up there a few times , with my ATV .
Hey there. Just saw this. Great info! Yeah. We love it up there! Thanks for sharing!
Great tips. Can’t believe you got a Jackery in there. Thanks for sharing.
Haha. Thanks! It actually fits perfect. Enjoy your adventures!
Mendocino wilderness is infamous for lots of washouts and slow for repairs. I go up there a lot and I always carry electric chainsaw with lots of extra batteries. Tons of places to explore. 👍
Just saw this and yes! For sure. Always a smart practice. And its kind a fun clearing sometimes!
Can you tell me what awning you're using on your set up please?
Its a thebushcompany 180XT awning
Good ideas. Good install
Thanks 👍
Beautiful! Did you guys get to see any fireworks?
Did not see fireworks. No firework shows up there. Too off grid for that. Thanks for watching!
100% agree on the positive attitude!

Good stuff man! I was going crazy not being able to leave my bedding in mine. Only camped in it once & have the exped megamat max (6") + some big canvas sleeping bags. Got the ikamper mattress like yours finally, its been out of stock.
Very inspiring video!! ❤my wife, son and I love finding spots like this... Just drive and don't stop until you find your own sanctuary. I love this video!!
Thank you! Thats very nice! Have fun out there and have a great holiday season!
would you recommend the skycamp mini for one adult + two teens?
Yeah. One adult and two smaller teens will be fine. But three grown ups is too cramped.
How big and what kind of storage box sits behind the tent ? I have a 4runner also ...
Hi. Its a 95L Roam box.
Thanks !
