    Sam's Club has better prices than Costco. Costco has a lot of fancy stuff you won't find in Sam's Club. If you have a BJ's in your area it is somewhere in between Sam's Club and Costco as far as the merchandise they carry.

I get detergent pods at dollar general on Saturday $5 off $25 sometimes and use on vacation to do our laundry. But the clogging up because the pods don’t dissolve good I don’t use anymore. OH and the paper towels too!! Members mark are just as good as bounty!

    We did the master list - it's a brilliant idea!! Over the course of about 6 months we would add meals we liked to this master list to refer back to in the future. I have salads and sides as well as seasonal dishes (some foods we prefer in winter and others are very summery to us). This has saved us hundreds of dollars. Shopping the pantry and freezer is definitely the most important first step in meal planning. Make meals around what you have and the grocery list is what you need to round out the week. I also never leave the store without a quick tour of the meat department looking for marked down options. These go right into the freezer.

    The best organic pest repellent I found is made from rhubarb leaves. Just let them rot in a bucket of water and use the liquid on the plants. Just make sure you keep your bucket covered because the stench is unbearable 😁. Oh, and you need to wash your produce before eating - rhubarb leaves have some toxins in them, but it's not an issue if you wash your veggies. For carrots, either try growing them in pots or get a small variety like Paris Market - Atlas (if you can get it in the U.S.). Those carrots make small, round roots like radishes so they don't need deep soil. For containers, or shallow raised beds, I use Royal Chantenay 2 carrots. They are thick and stubby, rather than long and lean so perfect for tricky conditions. I found some in one of my raised beds yesterday, when I was clearing out spent plants from last year and, oh boy, they do taste good. Basil doesn't like much water, but enjoys the company of tomatoes so you could try moving some and see how it does growing in a different space. Your little garden is doing well btw, and I'm very happy for you.

    • @AutumnLeighatHome
      @AutumnLeighatHome หลายเดือนก่อน

      @theclumsyprepper I will definitely see if we can find that type of carrot at my local store. You mentioning that basil doesn’t like much water confirms my suspicion that I was over watering it. The leaves were not limp but pretty stiff that’s what I was thinking. I am trying to feel the soil now and only watering if it’s not damp an inch or so down. Thank you for the encouragement! This is definitely a learning curve! lol

    Well done on getting those niggling jobs completed Autumn Leigh. You have a lovely home and lovely daughters. Watching them play made me smile. My own kids are of the furry, four-legged kind and the big dogs are wrecking the place so it's not as nice and clean as I would like it to be (despite a lot of cleaning), but I don't mind much. They are happy and that matters more to me. My current project is a crochet blanket I'm trying to finish. I started making it two years ago but, with the job, garden and health issues I have not picked it up in ages so I'm determined. I should be finished tomorrow evening and I'm really looking forward to ticking that job of off my very long to-do list. Looking forward to the next video, I don't always comment but I watch all of them.

      We have two furry friends as well! Between them and the four kids I feel like all I do is clean 😅 but I am so thankful for them and I know one day I will miss the chaos very much. I use to crochet but it’s been so long since I have done it I have forgotten how. I would love to learn how to sow but that takes a lot of time and right now it just isn’t top priority lol. I am trying to tackle learning to garden and preserve first. I figured I could try that later on! Post a picture of your finished blanket! We would love to see it! That’s a lot of hard work and a huge check off! My list of “to dos” grows faster than I can shorten it but that’s where I do my best to prioritize. 😊 sometimes getting anything done is easier said than done! lol

      @@AutumnLeighatHome Sewing is pretty easy, once you get the basics right, so I do hope you'll try it out. I'm not an expert sewist myself, but I can do basics like curtains, pillowcases, dog bedding and simple clothing (skirts etc). I mostly use my sewing skills to mend things as my doggies were kind enough to chew and rip a lot of my bedding, blankets and chindi rugs when they were teething. I still have a pile of those to fix. As for the blanket, it is finished, but I do not do social media, apart from listening to stuff on TH-cam so I will not be posting photos of it anywhere. I used to have a quite a following on Facebook and, well, it wasn't great in the long run. It took over my life and I needed to step away from it. I'm happier just chatting to people in comments and listening to interesting stuff rather than posting myself. You are right to prioritize food growing and preserving though, it takes longer to master than sewing or crochet so it's best to leave learning those skills for the long winter evenings, especially when you have a young family. Maybe you could get the children involved in learning? Start simple, with dolls clothes or tote bags for your girls. This is how I started. My older sister taught me to hand sew when we were children. Our dolls and teddies were the best dressed bunch for miles around 😊.

      @AutumnLeighatHome หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@theclumsyprepper I totally understand and respect you for recognizing that. I have to remind myself that TH-cam is a hobby but I also love learning from others like yourself. I appreciate the community of those willing to share skills they have already mastered and I am just here to encourage those that maybe want to start. As for sewing. I have started to teach my young ones how to fix dresses and the occasional toy. I learned cross stitch and embroidery when I was younger but like you mentioned I want to focus on this for now while still encouraging them if I see them interested in it.

    Your garden is doing much better than mine. We have had a very cold and wet spring, again, so most of what I've sown outside failed. Regarding garlic - I don't know when you have planted yours, but garlic needs a bit of frost to form the cloves. The leaves you can eat when they're young, but it's the scapes (i.e. the flower stems) that you want. They are a great addition to soups, stews, pesto etc. Btw, do you know you can make pesto from pretty much everything? I don't like basil much so make my pesto from things like spring onions, kale, spinach, lettuce, young turnip leaves or whatever I have available.

    • @AutumnLeighatHome
      @AutumnLeighatHome 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am so sorry your garden is struggling. That would be so hard. I know a lot of people use grow lights. I would love to have them one day but this is the budget friendly way of having a garden. 😅 I planted my garlic back in November so they were in the ground all through winter and had a terrible taste. They never formed scapes and had started dying back. I debated leaving them in hopes that maybe they would bulb up next year but decided I would probably get better use of the space by planting g something else. The only thing I can think was the soil was too compact. I just learned that about pesto last year and thought I would try something new….i failed miserably lol

    Recipe: -Add two raw chicken breasts, 8oz cream cheese, and restaurant style Italian Dressing to crock pot (I bought Aldi brand but you can do the name brand Olive Garden dressing) -turn crock pot on high for 4hrs (or until chicken is falling apart easily) -take chicken out and shred or chop the chicken then replace back into crock pot. -boil bow tie pasta following the instructions on the box, drain, dump into crock pot - Stir and enjoy! (Add Parmesan if desired.)

    Why use different flour ? Bread, self rising , all purpose you mentioned

      Great question! Different types of flour have different levels of gluten which helps with rise in the different breads being baked. You would choose a flour depending on what you are baking and the desired outcome. Hopefully that helps! I am still learning when is best to which as well. 😊

      Bread requires flour with a higher gluten content. Some people buy wheat gluten to add to their all purpose flour to save money on baking bread. (Bread flour is more expensive than regular flour).

    All those plants will not have enough room in that tower, especially peppers. They get rather big and each will need its own separate pot to thrive.

      Thank you for sharing! Do you think they will transplant ok? I have four pots not currently being used. I wonder if I could move them when they start getting bigger? I don’t foresee all of them germinating but it would be a great problem if they did! Thanks for the advice!
