The Wall of Storage: a Backlit Hardware Store at Home
I have a lot of hardware in organizer boxes. Yes, I know I don't need to be a hardware store unto myself; McMaster-Carr ships almost overnight. But when you need 5 of some speciality fastener that comes in a box of 100, what are you going to do? Throw the rest away? Of course not.
Watch as I hang those organizers on the wall, using a custom aluminum frame equipped with LED backlighting! Inspired by www.youtube.com/@MaxMakerChannel.

Great ideas! Who makes the dividers that are on the French cleats for the removable plastic trays with lids? Been trying to find something for my stack of those forever.
The steel cases with removable plastic organizers have dividers molded in; those can't be adjusted. They came from McMaster-Carr. Check out my short video about the crimp terminal organizer for an alternative way of increasing the resolution though. For that one I 3D printed some cups to subdivide the spaces in a fixed tackle box. Thanks for the comment!
What organizer is that he grabs at 15:26? That thing is neat!
They ARE neat, aren't they? @SteveRobillard and I were discussing those in the comments here. Unfortunately neither of us could find more of them. I can say that the black and orange ones are Black & Decker, and the gray ones are "WorkForce" branded, but molded into the back it says "Rimax" and "Made in Columbia". Good luck and post a comment if you find them anywhere!
Nice video. I like that you show how one small project balloons into several other projects as you go along. Just like mine do.
Ah, you understand! Don't they always? I've got a few more videos coming that are even more like that!
Nice job. I often use extrusion as a hanging rail similar to a cleat by making a 6mm wedge for the slot, then the frame can sit on the hanging rail
Thanks! That sounds like an easier way with less fiddling for sure.
Great idea and I like your humour and editing a lot! Keep up the good work, you deserve a lot more subs
Thank you! I will certainly make more.
FYI: Those rubber bumpers will most likely leave a black residue mark on the paint. You may want to put something like packing tape as a buffer.
Thank you for the tip! After I take this down I'll have to patch the screw holes and touch up the paint anyway, so I think it's okay.
Great video!! Do you happen to have a de-interlacing filter or some sort of motion smoothing on by chance? The motion seems a bit off, and if you slow it down about every other frame has interlacing artifacts
Thank you for your comment, this is just the sort of feedback I need. I shoot everything with my Pixel phone. I import it into a Davinci Resolve project set to 30 fps. But looking at my source files in windows they're reported as 30.08 fps, 30.09 fps, etc. What to do?
First vid I've seen of yours, About half way through I thought "This dude is crushing it he must have 100k subs" Keep up the killer work, subbed.
Hey, thank you so much! Just invite 99,400 of your closest friends and we'll be there! Seriously though this video has changed things for my channel, it's taking off a bit as a result. I have to make more!
I like your style. Keep making videos!
Thank you! There's more to come.
looks awesome! i love the idea.
Thanks!
Interesting project. Does the lighting actually help you see whats in the boxes, or is it purely decorative ?
I've been reorganizing everything between the three types of organizers you see in the video, and actually it really does help. For instance: some of those drawers can be subdivided once (with a little sliding plastic piece) and other can be subdivided three times; these latter are useful in situations like "4-40 x 1/4" machine screws, of which I may have 4 different types that could all live in one drawer. The lighting helped me quickly scan through the stack looking for that type of drawer so I could allocate them most usefully.
Congratulations on reaching 500 subscribers, this channel is a great one, helping so many people with great ideas hidden in its single every video. Deserves millions of subscribers, views, etc.
Thank you so much! And may your hopes come true!
Very good idea, you can do better, good work
Thank you! I hope I do better soon. More videos on the way.
Great content and great dynamics on camera!! I hope you get lot of subs, here's one more!
Thank you so much! I'll keep at it!
That looks awesome. Maybe the use of a light dispersion layer behind the sorting boxes might help getting even more light through. Now a lot of the light are just illuminating the lights on the other side.
Good idea! Thank you.
yooo beautiful work eiki!
Thank you!
This is awesome, I definitely need to do the same thing with my drawer racks.
The lighting is SO worth it!
What are you going to light up next?💡
I'm taking suggestions! This LED strip is fun to use!
This was awesome. Very well done and the camera work made me laugh
Thanks! It's really good to hear that.
Where did you get the storage container boxes above the bookcase I have some I purchased from HomeDepot but can no longer find them?
I also got those from Home Depot but I think possibly from another store as well. They're obviously all made by the same company but they're branded differently; the black and orange ones are Black and Decker for instance. It's been a long time since I bought one though. Good luck!
@@EikiMartinson Thanks for the quick response. I fear that it may take luck or a lucky find on craigslist/facebook marketplace at this point. Since like you it was years ago that I got them.
@@SteveRobillard It's a convenient thing for sure. I'm reorganizing now a bit to put the sorts of things I need in the field into those boxes, since they're easy to take with you.
@@EikiMartinson Great minds, that is exactly why I am looking for more I can put together a kit in each box and they are easy to bring to the library where I teach.
@@SteveRobillard Ah, we should connect. I've done some teaching at a makerspace as well.
Beautiful, but since you went to so much trouble, you also should have painted them all the same color.
Thank you but that's a step too far! I acquired them over years of course, but if I were building out a new system I'd get them all at once at the same place and they'd be the same color. By the way, one of them glows significantly warmer than the others because it's the oldest one and the bins are yellowing!
Love the setup, V2 should have dedicated lights per tray and a app to assist with finding something. im sure it will come in handy when you have a dedicated wall
Good idea but I think I need an intern to maintain the database in that case! Getting this done already triggered a reorganization and consolidation effort. Lots of overlap and inefficiency at the moment. Thank you for your comment!
Zack Freedman did this! Check out his video on it, it's awesome
Hey man, great idea, simple execution, amazing results! The video editing was on point too. Congrats! Keep it up, I'm already excited to see what you'll do next.
Hey, thanks so much! Check out Max as well, he has some great videos.
Now you just need to make one with addressable zones so you can light up just the area with the parts you are looking for. 😊
As long as I can play tetris on it too! Thanks!
Light up the zones of the stuff you have not touched in years. It’d be fun for sure. But the rot scares me. My one or two units have the rot really bad.
@@FearsomeWarrior LOL, I don't need THAT much accountability! As far as the rot goes, yeah, these are pretty cheaply made, but ubiquitous also, so possibly they can be replaced? It's also possible to fix or reinforce them. I've glued some of the seams back together already.
@@EikiMartinson I mean the things I forget about or never have applicable use. I think you store a much more active collection of parts.
@@FearsomeWarrior Ah, don't give me too much credit! I've got plenty of parts I can't bear to, um, part with myself. But what a joy it is when you finally get to use one of them, right?
That took a lot of work Boss, and it looks like it paid off. Well Done!
Thank you! I'm very pleased to finally have it all together like this.
THX
Very very nicely done. Your work is neat and well thought out. I am impressed. The only possible suggestion I would’ve had would be to use a different color wires for the sprinkler line. While it’s easy for you to distinguish between which is power and which one is 24 VAC.. there’s always a possibility that someone else might come along if you sell the house. But honestly, you did a fantastic job.
Thank you for your kind words! The next owners will probably be mystified to learn their sprinklers are controlled by a "raspberry pie". ;) Handing over IoT hardware like this is a tricky thing in any case for reasons of network provisioning if nothing else (I think about this a lot). I agree with your comment though; other colors for 24V would certainly have been the right thing to do in this case. But you know how it goes: all I have handy is black, white, green, and sometimes red!
Thanks dude, enjoyed that!
You're welcome!
Cool. Subbed !!!
Thank you!
I have an old controller that no longer activates the circuits but an unused b+ as we.. Could you share the pinout info from the pi to the transformer. I think I can harvest parts from my controller and basically get build a replacement as well.
Hi! Thanks for your comment. You can use any of the Pi's GPIO pins to drive a relay board. Depending on how that board is set up, you may choose active high or active low in Open Sprinkler. And you can use the relay to switch the mains power to the transformer. In my case I'm taking 5V power and ground to the relay board from Pi pins 4 and 6, then using pin 12 (GPIO 18) as the signal to the relay. Does that make sense?
This is a great video. I’m not sure I’ve seen a video I could relate to this much in awhile. Certainly the best video on OpenSprinkler that I’ve seen.
Thank you so much! There was a lot to think about in that installation related to packaging, weatherproofing, power, etc. that I perceive gets glossed over very often.
Hardly ever use the fixed wrench that come with the grinder.
just use your hand like a normal human being. ive never used a wrench for grinders ever. i throw the wrenches in my scrap steel box when i get a new metabo.
Chinglish is crazy
I call this tool, a tofu dreg project.
Wear gloves push button remove wheel with elbow grease sissy
It's an angle grinder, You don't need a wrench. Hand tight is all you need.
Or just make your own for pennies.
You don't know about grinders, no wrench needed to change grinding wheels
Or just grab it
Just push the lock button and use your hand on the disc to tighten or loosen. Waste of time and money.
Ya not for that gronder
Does it work?
It works, yes. Still trashy though!
Convenient and works fine. If you can’t make it work because the little arms aren’t coplanar probably don’t use the tool because you’ll cut your arm off.
Oh it works. But still kinda trashy and hilariously translated, with a detour through Spanish on the way to English looks like.
I’m a welder I usually just remove the discs with my hand
Me too. I tossed the wrench the day I bought my grinder
Just use your hand
The reversed rust haha and “It can take a long time” wth does that even mean
More like don’t ever use that wrench lmao it doesn’t need to be that tight
What You know, fundraising is a thing now, and they make the black part from reversed rust! What a piece of pinnacle technology! Just be cautious as it can „make a long time” 😂
Who knew Biden had a second job?
