The Wall of Storage: a Backlit Hardware Store at Home
I have a lot of hardware in organizer boxes. Yes, I know I don't need to be a hardware store unto myself; McMaster-Carr ships almost overnight. But when you need 5 of some speciality fastener that comes in a box of 100, what are you going to do? Throw the rest away? Of course not.
Watch as I hang those organizers on the wall, using a custom aluminum frame equipped with LED backlighting! Inspired by www.youtube.com/@MaxMakerChannel.

    Great ideas! Who makes the dividers that are on the French cleats for the removable plastic trays with lids? Been trying to find something for my stack of those forever.

    • @EikiMartinson
      @EikiMartinson 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The steel cases with removable plastic organizers have dividers molded in; those can't be adjusted. They came from McMaster-Carr. Check out my short video about the crimp terminal organizer for an alternative way of increasing the resolution though. For that one I 3D printed some cups to subdivide the spaces in a fixed tackle box. Thanks for the comment!

      They ARE neat, aren't they? @SteveRobillard and I were discussing those in the comments here. Unfortunately neither of us could find more of them. I can say that the black and orange ones are Black & Decker, and the gray ones are "WorkForce" branded, but molded into the back it says "Rimax" and "Made in Columbia". Good luck and post a comment if you find them anywhere!

    Interesting project. Does the lighting actually help you see whats in the boxes, or is it purely decorative ?

    • @EikiMartinson
      @EikiMartinson 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I've been reorganizing everything between the three types of organizers you see in the video, and actually it really does help. For instance: some of those drawers can be subdivided once (with a little sliding plastic piece) and other can be subdivided three times; these latter are useful in situations like "4-40 x 1/4" machine screws, of which I may have 4 different types that could all live in one drawer. The lighting helped me quickly scan through the stack looking for that type of drawer so I could allocate them most usefully.

    Very very nicely done. Your work is neat and well thought out. I am impressed. The only possible suggestion I would’ve had would be to use a different color wires for the sprinkler line. While it’s easy for you to distinguish between which is power and which one is 24 VAC.. there’s always a possibility that someone else might come along if you sell the house. But honestly, you did a fantastic job.

    • @EikiMartinson

      Thank you for your kind words! The next owners will probably be mystified to learn their sprinklers are controlled by a "raspberry pie". ;) Handing over IoT hardware like this is a tricky thing in any case for reasons of network provisioning if nothing else (I think about this a lot). I agree with your comment though; other colors for 24V would certainly have been the right thing to do in this case. But you know how it goes: all I have handy is black, white, green, and sometimes red!

      Hi! Thanks for your comment. You can use any of the Pi's GPIO pins to drive a relay board. Depending on how that board is set up, you may choose active high or active low in Open Sprinkler. And you can use the relay to switch the mains power to the transformer. In my case I'm taking 5V power and ground to the relay board from Pi pins 4 and 6, then using pin 12 (GPIO 18) as the signal to the relay. Does that make sense?
