ZimaBoard Tiny Server for Home Assistant
🎁Giveaway. The luckiest subscriber will get a ZimaBoard for free🎁
I've been searching for a small, energy-efficient server which will be installed in a family member's apartment - in Europe, power consumption really matters now. I avoided a Pi because it doesn't have a SATA port, and I don't really trust SD cards. Luckily, Icewhale sent me this unit for review. It's funny - I’m developing IoT devices for Home Assistant but haven't shown the installation process yet. This is my first review, so please be kind!

      MAX version can supply power to the ESP32 camera every time the doorbell is pushed, so the only modification is needed instead of shoving the doorbell dammy image on the phone, showing a photo or live video from that ESP cam.

    It would be interesting the web configuration in the ESP instead of home assistant this way you can configure it in AP mode plus add HomeKit compatibility even visible in Alexa and thus have notifications in alexa. Just a thought. I also see two relays on the Max model but not two input with opto. I don't read in the github anything regarding the use of an additional input for that Second relay. This way you could use it as a street doorbell and street doorbell and home doorbell and home doorbell. (That's how I have it with another circuit of my own, not commercial). I used an opto to add it to a Shelly this way I have both or with a Uni the same. I see a 5k resistor on the opto I don't remember which one I used but that one is big. Fermax gives about 2.8v ac or modulated I seem to remember. I repeat it would be interesting the web configuration option integrated in the ESP and HomeKit compatibility. Consider creating a Telegram group is much better, Facebook those of us in this world of automations don't use it. Thanks and good job!

    • @PricelessToolkit
      @PricelessToolkit 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for your insights! The second relay is indeed designed for a second door, and it features one optocoupler that can be triggered from as low as 2V, so using a 5K resistor is appropriate. There's also a standard input that can handle up to 5V. I believe one optocoupler is sufficient since we're only dealing with one doorbell. Regarding HomeKit compatibility, I don't have any experience with Apple products, so any resources or links you could share for better understanding would be great. I'll also look into adding ESPHome web configuration. Thanks for the feedback and suggestion about creating a Telegram group; it's something to consider. Thanks again for your support and good job on your setup!

    • @litris
      @litris 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I was on the Souliss project before these systems came out as well as the development board. We were able to activate without any complication the configuration via web enters without problems on an ESP12. The advantage is that all the configuration including the wifi connection is done in ESP AP mode without the need for external code. You can configure what you want it to display, plus an Alexa compatibility using belkin's Wemo. It takes up very little space. This same thing could be done with HomeKit but it takes up more code so it would just be one or the other configuration. It's been a while since I abandoned the project if I can and I have time I look it up on their github and see if something can be done without much work. About the second optocoupler is because in your esqueja the external input is the same as the latch and that of the call. It is not standalone and cannot be used as a secondary, you could only use a free pin as you say. But looking at it it looked like a cool different input for another doorbell and the second tele for na second input. Thanks for your work I leave it here that I get long writing 🤦🏻‍♂️

      @@PricelessToolkit Home assistant makes many changes constantly, it is an advantage because of the improvements but also an advantage because they constantly touch everything without checking and launch it, my house is fully automated with more pro systems (I am an installer) if it was for HA more than once I would have been left stranded. I left a server in my Rack (a nuc) configured with HA to test and with every upgrade it broke something in the system. Whenever I updated it I always prayed because I did not know what was going to happen, I even installed a system that tested it before but always marked error and updated it anyway. Zigbee systems that fell systems that changed their configuration and so on. This did not happen in OpenHAB and neither with Soulis. Lucky that I only installed it as a test with some systems, zigbee, z-wave etc finally removed it. Thanks and maybe I'll take a look at it again but a lot of people touch it and upgrade without testing. They change versions without notice remove systems (I had the supervisor and suddenly it was no longer compatible something absurd, surte I manage with the terminal and I could fix it but for many it is bad.

For example, the 2 wires coming out from rightmost LOCK section should be connected to the Neutral wire? How about the other LOCK section (the one left to the first one I talked about), both cables should be connected to the wire coming from the lock on the street? Again, sorry if this is the most stupid question ever. I’m trying to be 100% sure before I install this. I just don’t want to blow up the whole intercom system of my apartment complex.

    Does the PIR motion sensor works reliably to detect the mail inserted into the box? I thought PIR only works well with objects emitting significant amount of infrared heat, like people or animals. Isn't this going to give false positives on a warm summer day if the mailbox is outside?

      100% reliable? No! but near it detects mail inserted into the box. PS: The sensor on this video is old, you can watch the new version.

    Thank you for review, its a great little server and i dont need PCIe but i will love to have restart and power buttons not just soldering pads

      I can understand that but in the server use case, you don't need those buttons.
