Duke of Kent's Waltz

The Duke of Kent’s Waltz comes to us from 1801. It was rediscovered in a coverless book at the British Library.
The Plains of Waterloo
Now nearly forgotten, “The Plains of Waterloo” once enjoyed huge popularity. The song uses 18 verses to detail the battle of Waterloo, Sunday, June 18th 1815, when Napoleon was defeated by the armies of the Seventh Coalition (consisting mainly of Brits and Prussians). There are many variants of the lyrics as well as of the melody, but old sources assure us that the one used here is “the tune pr...

So many similarities to modern american square and line dancing.
"Le carillon national"
I just got into this video from Olympics Marie A./ Gojira presentation. As a Brazilian, it's interesting how a presentation estimulates curiosity to understanding the background of a entire culture :)
Patterns for Empire (or Regency)-style dresses (and accessories such as jackets and petticoats) are easier to find nowadays. If you don’t sew, you could find a dressmaker to assemble it.
Other way Mr Collins!!!!!
I've never seen it done like this before. This is how it should look. th-cam.com/video/PFD2EaNb7Vg/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=EricBorresen
Well done
Que dança graciosa! Belíssima performance
Belíssima dança!
One thing I have noticed with dancing through the ages. Is the fact using this one as an example, they're the same dance steps done back in the Medieval time. It seems to me that it wasn't until the late 1800's that truly new dance steps came about and most certainly in the 1900's. When during these times the music changed considerably.
Majestic
Where do the ladies find those dresses?
Many of us sew them by ourselves 😊
Very well done! It is as if they are playing a game, like children, but they are adults. Great fun!
When was this tune written?
@Randomelon English anonymus ca. 1603. The tune appears as Courante CLVI. already in Michael Praetorius´ Terpsichore (Wolfenbüttel 1612), what nearly nobody knows...
Well strangely linked with Descant to the hunt's up ... th-cam.com/video/ajaMWAd5MZs/w-d-xo.html I do not play it so quickly and so well ... but I explain. All the best ...
@EGKANA Now now, bit harsh
@@WestfaliaMagna Only the A part is in Terpsichore.
I like the way the steps are done..it is a step up from just walking around
Brutto

ah ça ira ça ira aristocrates a la lanterne
Far too fast. No wonder they can't get round the figures in time!
Yes, but they have to keep up with the music. I have heard complaints that Playford is too slow before, but not too fast!
@@wodantheviking As a dancing class pianist. the tempo is dictated by the ability of the dancers and the dance floor surface.
So nice! 😍
This traditional English Morris dance tune from the late 1600's is a great example of a folk song written in dorian mode. For those who want sheet music or a track to dance to: musescore.com/user/643986/scores/5527312
Iris Wildeman. There's a nice version on The Broadside Band's album 'English Country Dances'. I believe you can buy the single track if you so wish.
Isn't it? I was watching Pride and Prejudice trying to figure it out but was unable to because of all the camera angle changes. I would love to find a group of people to do this dance with! It seems so fun
Me too!
Some people refer to this dance as "wrong way Mr Collins!" 🤣🤣🤣
I’d be really interested to see this done with more people. It’s really interesting to see this done without camera angle changes.
Still searching for this version of the song, I love it so! Amazing dancing, I wish I could find lessons closer to home
Iris Wildeman they sure it in Northanger Abbey if that helps.
I've managed to learn it by watching enough of these videos and I've taught my family! xD
Amazing!
Music is by Green Ginger www.greengingerband.co.uk
Interesting. I've seen two versions of this so far and neither are like the one I've seen before so I know there is at least one more version (though this is the closest of the two). Is that common?
This is the way I learned to dance "Childgrove": CHILDGROVE [IMPROPER] Figure 1 - Part A 1-4 All side right with partners 5-8 All side left to places. 9-16 All go back to back with partners (clockwise) Part B 1-4 All side right with opposite 5-8 All side left to places 9-16 All go back to back with opposites. Figure 2 CHILDGROVE [CONTINUED] Page 2 1-8 With Opposite: Two hand turn 1 ½ times round (clockwise). 9-16 With partner: ONE (1) time round (clockwise) 17-32 Figure of 8 First lady crosses 2nd couple [above] passes above 2nds lady, goes around 2nd lady, continues around 2nd gentleman. First gent the same with 2nd gent & 2nd lady, Gent yields right of way to his partner. Upon a couple’s arriving at either end of the whole set and standing out, lady & gent must change places, putting the lady to the gent’s right.
