I believe he loved her dearly. You can read it in his eyes and body language. I know he stated she wasn’t his type, he was attracted to “slutty” girls, which she clearly was not. I believe he was scared he’d up hurting her if they got together because he knew his demons. I honestly think he was trying to protect her from his lifestyle. I think he loved her so much, he had to let her go. It’s just sad all around because clearly she loved him as well.

There's another time that Jack and David were on the Merv Griffin Show. David did open up about how he felt his Father abandon him. Jack kind of interrupts and says David, I love you. David said thank you. Jack said, I just felt you needed to hear it. I believe Merv went to a commercial. And when they came back, Merv asked David if he would sing? David seemed surprised.
