Decoding ILER and TERA: Know Your Exposure History
ILER documents your deployment details, including locations and environmental hazards like burn pits. TERA lists potential toxic exposures related to your job, such as jet fuel for mechanics. It's crucial to ensure your TERA accurately reflects these exposures to establish service connections for health conditions. To access these records, you can use the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request or consult a veteran service officer, lawyer, or accredited agent.

Clarifying the VA's Approach to Hearing Loss Ratings

Frustrated with your VA hearing loss rating? You're not alone. Despite severe hearing loss, many veterans find themselves with a 0% rating. The VA measures hearing loss using two metrics: the pure tone threshold average and the speech discrimination score. I just got the call and scheduled an appointment. Am i too late? Can i get some pointers?
Point out the errors/any overlooked evidence. Stick to the facts, be kind and respectful. 👍🏻
I have my case number
Very nice, bodacious tata's. Good info too !
Thank you for your service. I’m a Navy vet as well 🫡 Would you have advice for my situation? It’s been over 5 years since I was rated 100%. Nothing has changed with my disability, so I would like to know if there is anything I can do to get this reviewed for P&T at this point?
Great information
You are so sincere and knowledgeable on VA disability.

That would be a great question for your dr 👍🏻
Very true statement, I have 70%loss in left and 40% right the hearing aids from the VA are the best and they gave me a device to bluetooth my tv also did c&p exam in June and still have NOT been rated yet been in decision since Aug.If your not rated it will cost you a 50$ co pay the aids an other devices are free ,my MOS is supposed to be presumptive on there chart 19K (Army) M1 tanks do you know why it might be taking a longer time for decisions when I left the exam examiner said ought to be notified in a couple of months been 6 months since exam
Wait times have been longer than usual recently, I’m seeing the same thing with my clients. I know it’s frustrating!
You forgot to include secondaries, such as mental health issues like depression along with tinnitus, balance issues & headaches/migraines. Don’t stop at the primary issues, there can be many secondaries too. Good luck.
Very true. This was just meant to explain how hearing is rated. There could be a whole series on secondaries! 👍🏻
Thank you. I'm a bookkeeper in Arizona helping a LA business register a tradename and it is totally different than what I'm used to in AZ. This was just what I needed.
So glad this was helpful!
Did you receive the National Guard records on CD or paper?
I’ve gotten them both ways. It might depend on the size of the file. If it’s from National Archive, it’s usually emailed as a PDF or papers are sent.
@@thevocalveteran Thank you.
I was denied and service connected in the same letter but denied for benefits of course
At the end of your recovery, reevaluate the veteran and the likelihood of a reduction in current rating increases? Especially, because surgery typically "improves" condition.
If surgery does improve the condition then yes, a decrease may be appropriate. However, you can be compensated for scars from a service connected surgery, especially if they are painful.
How do i start applying for champva for my spouse?
CHAMPVA www.va.gov/COMMUNITYCARE/programs/dependents/champva/champva-apply.asp FAQ: www.va.gov/COMMUNITYCARE/programs/dependents/champva/CHAMPVA-faq.asp Explanation: www.veteransaidbenefit.org/what-is-CHAMPVA-health-insurance.htm CHAMPVA identification (ID) card, handbook and related materials are mailed to you. Once you receive your CHAMPVA ID card, you can begin to use CHAMPVA. You are able to submit for repayment of all out of pocket medical expenses incurred since the veteran became 100%. Start gathering any receipts and once you get official CHAMPVA coverage, submit them within 180 days and get reimbursed. This chart provides a good explanation of coverage: www.howvadisabilityratingswork.com/resources/benefits/champva You must submit the following documents: * Application for CHAMPVA Benefits, VA Form 10-10d * Other Health Insurance (OHI) Certification, VA Form 10-7959c * For individuals who are eligible for Medicare for any reason, we need a copy of your Medicare card. * The VBA rating decision showing the Veteran is permanently and totally disabled (or death rating for a survivor) * Veteran's DD214 * A copy of the marriage certificate to your current spouse * Birth certificate/adoption papers for children * School certification of full-time enrollment for children ages 18-23 years
Hello April. Can you help me get my benefits. Chief master handwrote letter yet nothing. Serious lifetime injury. Removed my spine and it does not fit. The doctor now lives in Dubai 30 floors up
Yes, Information on how to apply to work with me is in the description of the video.
@thevocalveteran trying to get off floor from someone saying yes to me. Will contact soon ok.
what you some things than cause this? i was just diagnosed with having it in my feet. and hair on legs gone.
Most common reason is diabetes but it could also be from nerve damage or exposure to extreme temperatures.
@@thevocalveteran They recently diagnosed me with Peripheral Neuropathy in feet. and i guess now i know why no hair on my legs. My feet and lower legs also swell up. I have 10% hearing loss. 10% tinnitus 70% mental health 10% acid reflux. Was curious as to if this could be secondary to any of these other issues. Thank you.
@@thevocalveteran In my case I have CIDP next best thing to MS. last summer my claim on my own behalf and with a scathing DR. Note was granted. Based on the Camp Lejeune toxic water for Both legs, one arm , and Sciatica 40%. I had 2 C&P exams and each time they were pushing for me being borderline Diabetic. I am 64 and never been diagnosed for it and examiners trying to wiggle in a lie there. My leg hairs are wiped out too, I am now going for a secondary of anxiety and depressing.
I was exposed to noise polution working in the engineroom for 5 yrs on two different ships. My hearing is normal but my tinnitus is Constant and louder when i have a cold. My hearing test proves my hearing is normal. Actually, my ears are sensitive to loud noise. So sensitive. Currently waiting for the results of my claim.
Do the exposure 2 Asbestos count. I was at Navy ship yard on the Uss. Independence in the 80s
If you have asbestosis or other asbestos-related disease and can prove you were onboard at the time - yes, you can.
Yes, asbestos exposure is considered a toxic substance
QUESTION: I had a C&P exam last month for hearing loss and tinnitus. I claimed that both my hearing loss and tinnitus was due to acoustic trauma and to ototoxic exposure when I spray painted military vehicles with CARC paint in 1982. The medical literature I submitted with my initial claim supported that both hearing loss and tinnitus can be caused from exposure to toluene, ethyl benzene, diesel fuel, methyl ethyl ketone, lead compounds, tricholorethane, and xylene. All of these chemicals are associated with CARC paint and/or with the cleaning solvents I used while painting. When I entered the military my hearing tested normal, and when I discharged the threshold had changed to indicate a loss of hearing. The C&P examiner tested me and said he was recommending a favorable finding. My concern is that the VA did not ask the C&P examiner to include any TERA related questions. When I asked the C&P examiner why he did not ask about TERA, he confirmed that his instructions from the VA did not include TERA. So my question is that even if I get service connected for the hearing loss and tinnitus, should I contact the VA and ask for another C&P audiology exam that includes the TERA aspect? (I realize that TERA will not make any difference in my rating percentage.) Thanks!
Sounds like you will get service connection from the noise exposure alone, I wouldn’t worry about getting it tied to TERA.
Yes play your harp
I agree
The PACT ACT is just a name although the government makes it seem like the PACT ACT is going to take care of disabled veterans. However, they are really going to make you fill out a million TPS rpeorts, do dolphin tricks, deny your claims and send you back to square number one to fill out more TPS reports. It's all a facade to ACT like they want to take care of vets.....
More great info. Critical step in developing a claim...gathering military records. The hospital retrieved the paper records. Did they scan and send on CD or other digital format, or did they mail paper copies? Thank you for another great video. Keep them coming.
VA Secure Messaging, in the VA App and in a web browser, is very empowering. Managing my care is MUCH MORE efficient than without it. I have sent countless messages to multiple providers: PCP, Specialists, Pharmacy, etc. And they typically respond with 2-3 business hours. Secure Messaging is also a great tool when you are seeking treatment and using those progress notes as evidence to support your claim. You should always review your VA encounters for accuracy. When you find errors or discrepancies, send a Secure Message to the Provider calling out the error and request it to be corrected. When the VA Rater reviews your VA Notes, they will see your secure message correcting errors that may be counterproductive to your claim. Thank you for sharing.
Congratulations on your milestone 👍🇺🇸
Thank you very much!
I tried community care also for an issue with podiatry and vascular issue that ultimately was never received, developed gangrene costing me my right leg after already losing my left leg. Now I am a bilateral above the knee amputee, both legs above the knee. Thanks community could care less. Be very careful going to community care, they really do not care. Thats the truth
My Health eVet is a great tool, and Secure Messages is a critical component of support that enhances the care we receive from the VA. Unfortunately, you can only send messages to Recipients that are in the drop-down "TO" list, or as a reply to a message you received. If the Provider you are trying to Message is NOT in the drop-down Recipient List, reach out to the My Health eVet Support Representative at your clinic. Every clinic has one. This Rep will be able to add the Provider to your drop-down Recipient List. Keep in mind the Recipient List only contains Provider Groups. You cannot send Secure Messages to individual Providers, only to Provider Groups. But, you can add the name of the Provider in the Subject Line and/or address them in the body of the message.
I use this all the time. Always a timley response.
Yes!! 😊
My mental health examiner (depression) definitely asked baited questions to not rate me that high. Asked a lot about family life before service. Also kept trying to get me to say that my life is fine as long as I have medication.
Great information
Yeah people (not companies) love doing things that are funny to them and them alone. The whole “she must be pissed off right about now” vibe I recommend not bringing up anything ever And sometimes you won’t get the poop stick

They WHO?
Oops…that was a confusing intro! This is a clip from a video I did on C&P exams.
You forgot to add mental health issues with hearing loss or CAPD, depression would be a good secondary condition & possibly migraines/headaches as secondary’s too. Just a thought.
@@CPODeepSeaDiver yes, those can be secondary conditions to claim once hearing loss is service connected.
Could you possibly answer a question, I received a 0% rating on my TBI, can I use a mental health C&P exam results that was conducted a month later, to help me with my HLR on my TBI rating?
An HLR can only consider the evidence they had at the time. If you want them to consider evidence from an exam a month later, I suggest a supplemental claim with a personal statement, pointing out the new evidence you want them to consider.
@ not trying to argue truly, just asking, even if the mental health C&P highlighted the mental health issues are in direct relation to the TBI? Just so you know, the TBI exam was done by a Family Medicine Doctor who seemed to ignore what the VHA Physiatrist, stated about me having cognitive issues and depression issues due to my TBI and Parkinson’s disease. The Family Medicine Doctor stated that my TBI was resolved, without any neurological, psychological, or Cognitive tests.
@ PS the Family medicine doctor’s exam lasted 35 minutes with her doing five separate DBQs
@@rickierexroade9734 if a family medicine doctor did your TBI exam that’s in direct violation of VA‘s policies on the medical professionals who can adequately assess a TBI. You can point that out in a higher level review, which they will then turn into a DTA/supplemental claim and order you a new exam. In my opinion, it would be faster to just straight go to a supplemental claim with a personal statement. That’ll save you the 3 to 5 months processing time of the higher level review.
@@thevocalveteran thank you for your reply. Just confused? The TBI has already been determined to be in-service event, but it was rated 0%, how do I ask for an increase in rating in a supplemental?
Beautiful! Thank you for sharing your talents.
Oh...you can also provide a window of UNavailability...like if you are going to be out of town...The contract company will schedule around those dates. Keep in mind though that this flexibility is limited in scope. You can also reschedule a C&P exam one time.
Good info...but do you actually play the harp? 🙂

Claims are taking up to 5 months to process right now. I know it’s annoying. 😥 my contact info is in the description of each video, or on the info page of the TH-cam channel.
Very informative! Thank you very much.
Hi. Within the first 19 days after fling my initial claim on 10/10/24, I had 1 specialty exam for eyes (20 min.), 1 specialty exam for hearing loss & tinnitus (45 min.), and 1 general exam for GERD, ED, reactive airways, sinusitis, rhinitis with polyps, OSA, mid and lower back, sciatica, bilateral wrist arthritis, and migraines (5 hours). I’m still waiting to be contacted to schedule an exam for depression, but other than that I should be done. I learned that the VA doesn’t give the examiners all of your submitted evidence, so you’ll have to bring it with you to the exam. Luckily, I went prepared. The examiners are super busy, so they’re not going to look at everything. (My examiner flat-out told me she was not going to look at my migraine journal because she didn’t have time, but the questions she asked covered everything about what I had documented.) They get only 500 characters to write a narrative to the VA about your claim, so preparation is key. HAVE YOR FILES ORGANIZED AND KNOW WHERE EVERYTHING IS.
Today's date 5 Nov 2024. Received my CD too. Submitted request April 2024.😊
This is one of the most informative tutorials on VA claims process that I have ever seen , thank you.
