Transitioning from Nursing (LPN) to Medical Coding
I've been an LPN a LONG time. I am frustrated with the system, not patients. Is this not exasperating to work in the area that basically is used for the financially side of medical care? Maybe i've been doing this too long and I'm cynical?
I am an LPN who is really considering going into coding. I was applying for different bridge programs to get my RN, but decided not to when I realized being an RN would not help my stress of being at the bedside and it wouldn’t help with short staffing or having agencies putting my license at risk. Nursing is great but more education on my part would not excuse me from all the issues I had with the profession, plus I have back issues, so that’s the needle that broke the camels back (pun intended). I have researched coding courses and have not seen anything under 3k, so very interested in learning more about self study guides.
Same. Challenging to get into any online or local ADN programs and the BSN programs are EXPENSIVE. I'm so burnt out after being an LPN for over 30 years. In this country, academia is out of control. It's so frustrating.
❤ So informative ❤!! Thank you😊
❤ Amazon ❤!! Thank you so much! Nurse over 30+ years I only knew about Medical/Coding as an option! Never knew about the route of medical documentation! Wonderful ❤ Knew Sub here Thank you for your time and your details ❤
Good morning
Thank you for the information. Would you say that a nurse should take coding courses and certification shortly before retirement?
If your plan is to do medical coding in retirement, then absolutely! Other than that specific reason, it can be learned at any time in your career. I don't recommend nurses get into medical coding until they have at least 2 years of floor experience.
Heey! Thank you for the shout out! Listening in to the replay on my evening walk!
I enjoyed this live. Thank you for the information.
I currently finished my online course through AACP and i am terrified to sit for my exam . Thank God that i found "medicalcodingbyJen" I now feel comfortable. i feel as if i wasted $3000 with AAPC. This is because I found a simpular way of learning medical coding for a cheaper price.
ugh I keep missing the lives Saturday morning. Please tell me starting time...
Hi Tiana! We start at 9am ET every Saturday. Don't stress about the lives. You can watch the replays at your convenience. Thank you for the support!!!
Haapy Monday, I enjoyed this live. Thanks for all the information that you gave.
They are trialing virtual nursing at the hospital I am employed with. Specifically on the inpatient surgical floor. The floor nurses will still work their 3 12 hr shifts, two of them will be in person on the floor, 1 shift weekly will be virtual. They are installing monitors in each patient room. The virtual nurse will be responsible for all of the admission histories, the home medication lists and discharge teaching. This will increase the ratio for the nurses left on the floor doing the hands on care. I'm not sure how I feel about this but they are doing it!
@@reneewhite1852 Thank you so much for watching and commenting!! I have a few follow up questions for you. From what you wrote, the floor nurse is still legally responsible for the patient. Is that correct? Also, what size is your hospital, how many beds are on the surgical floor, and what type of surgeries are typically performed at your hospital? Thank you!!
Final question for real😂 In what city and state is your hospital located (don’t say the name)?
@thecodingnurse 👋. I subscribed to your channel during the pandemic. I work for a hospital system. We have one hospital in MD and one in Delaware. I was a nurse in our Delaware hospital. There are 99 acute care beds, 5 icu beds. The surgical unit has 15 beds. They perform elective joint surgeries, bariatric surgeries, cardiothoracic surgeries, colectomies, appendectomies, cholecystectomies, etc. Our hospital stopped elective surgeries and closed the surgical floor I was working on and re-assigned me as a Covid nurse during the pandemic. It was very scary and exhausting and I quickly became burned out. Like you, I started looking to transition to HIM and that's when I found your channel. I started self studying to pass the CCS. I was hired as a CDS RN in April 2022, passed the CCS in January 2023 and just now passed the CCDS August of 2024. I watch all of your Saturday morning tea sessions! I'm still in contact with my old coworkers on the surgical floor. They tell me the virtual nursing starts in September. The nurse on the floor will be assigned a group that they are responsible for as usual. The virtual nurse will be somewhat of a float nurse helping all of the nurses with all of their assigned groups with the things I listed above.
@@reneewhite1852 Congratulations on obtaining your CCS and your CCDS credentials!!! You really understand why I always encourage nurses to learn medical coding before going into CDI. It's virtually impossible to assign the correct DRG without knowledge of the coding guidelines. The information about the hospital location and size is confirmation of what I thought initially. They are experimenting in smaller hospitals. I would love to know the case mix indexes for the hospitals doing these trials. Again, thank you for subscribing from the beginning of my journey!!
@thecodingnurse I absolutely do understand! I encourage any nurse who expresses interest in CDI to get a coding credential first! I do not see how anyone could possibly understand CDI without coding knowledge first. Thank you! I enjoy listening to you and Clarice!
“All you have to do is just do it” and “Do it scared” were so good🔥
Thank you for this video! Love the support and encouragement! I just received my AAPC books and study guide this week. I was an LPN from 1990-2007(med surg, office nurse, OB and endoscopy), now currently an account tech for the city (2007-current). Do you think it’s necessary to reinstate my LPN license before applying for a coder position so I could put it on my resume or would the LPN experience be enough? I plan on taking the CPC exam by the end of the year. Thank you!
Honestly, reactivating your license will be a smart move. There are coding jobs that require a coding cert and a nursing license. You will have more opportunity with it than without it. The CPC exam, like all medical coding certication exams, are based on the coding guidelines for the code sets on which you will be tested. Good luck to you!!
@@thecodingnurse Thank you so much for the advice. I’m enjoying your channel!
Im currently in school for healthcare management. Im in cpt coding class now. I would love to know any study tips you have to share. I will graduate May 2025. I want to to continue my education in H.I.M. I want to get into healthcare data analyst. Thanks sooo much for this video.
If your ultimate goal is healthcare data analyst, you will need to know MS Excel, SQL, and a data visualization tool, like Power BI or Tableau. As far as CPT, or any other medical code set, it will always come down to knowing the guidelines of that code set. Good luck!!
Thank you for this! I'm an LVN and have decided to step away from the floor and get into coding. Just received my books and have started to read the guidelines. I am now more confident in my decision to work on this side of the medical field.
Congratulations!!!! You're starting off on the right foot!! Everything in coding comes down to guidelines. Understanding them and applying them correctly will help you more than you will ever know!! Best of luck to you!!
Q
How does one break into it. All the jobs I see say that they need hedis experience. I have 30 years of nursing.
Honestly, the only way to break into it is with persistence. You have to keep applying until you find a company willing to train you. That’s how I got into it. Also, networking via social media, especially LinkedIn can help as well.
Hello, I'm an LVN with educational background in data analytics sql, advanced Excel, R. What do you recommend for me to jump into entry level healthcare data analyst position? Appreciate any guidance/advice - thank you.
Congratulations!!!! Since you have a background in SQL and Excel, you should create a project or two, using public health data, to be able to show potential employers your advanced data analysis skills. Do you also know a data visualization program, like Tableau or Power BI?
I've used tableau before. I'll look into power bi. Thank you for the tip on creating a project using public health data. I'll look into what projects I can work on. Appreciate the response 🙏
You got me at not having to use PAL.
I really enjoy you guys’ show whenever I’m able to watch
Thank you so much for watching!!! If you have a topic you would like for us to cover, please let me know and we'll work it into the broadcast.
@@thecodingnurse Lol most definitely 👍🏽
Wesr coast nurse wanting to take your course..2024
I think I’ve found my dream job this sounds so exciting to me it’s like putting health care puzzles together all day lol
If I can be of any assistance, don’t hesitate to reach out.
Hello
Q. Jesse do you sell coding workbooks?
Thanks so much! This presentation was extremely helpful! I bought the CDIP prep course from AHIMA and feel so lost. I’m a nurse with BSN and background in inpatient, hospice and claims and appeals. I’m excited to learn a new career area but wondering if I should take a basic medical course first?
Hi Ruby! Congrats on taking the steps to earn your CDIP credential. I can certainly help guide you. Email me at codingnurse@thecodingnurse.com for a more detailed discussion.
Thanks for posting this video. I’ve been a RN for 21 years. Currently working as Bed Placement Coordinator. I’m interested in becoming a Nurse Coder. Wasn’t sure what to expect. I honestly thought I could breeze into the profession, learn how to code and ride off into the sunset. Thanks for informing people that we have apply ourselves to learn the guidelines.
Hi Frankie!! Thank you for watching my video and sending me a comment! Once you learn medical coding and the guidelines, you will DEFINITELY be able to ride off into the sunset!! I've been working remotely since 2014. Also, some remote jobs will allow you to live ANYWHERE in the US. Good luck and reach out if you have any questions!!
Thank you soooo much for this video! I have Master's degree in Public Health and Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Management and am alsoa CPC. I was thinking about how to make it all work together. Medical coding is good but Inwant to advance in some way and use my degrees in some way. Do you have to be tech savvy to be in healthcare analytics?
Thank you so much for watching my video!! To answer your question, to move into data analytics, you need to have intermediate to advanced MS Excel and SQL knowledge. Some places will like knowledge of Python and a data visualization program, such as Tableau or Power BI. I suggest you learn MS Excel first, then SQL. Good luck!!!!
Thanks for the advice. I think I'm in this boat today. I don't want to dwell but focus on a strategy to succeed🙏❤
I'm sorry for the late response!! You have the right attitude! Don't dwell on it, but come up with a strategy to ace the exam the next time!!! You have more information now than you had before. Keep me posted and I wish you the best!!
Thank you very much for posting this information. This is the very direction I wanted to take, and I'm glad to know it will be lucrative.
Loved watching your video and thank tou for sharing your knowledge! Do you think it’s worth it to get certified and do an actual coding program? I applied to a community college around me and they have a diploma. What you think? Thank you :)
If you are a nurse, you don't have to go to a community college. If you aren't a nurse, you would need to go through an entire curriculum in order to become a coder. I can't recommend medical coding enough as a career! I wish I had known about it years before I actually transitioned into the profession.
Hi friends! I don’t think it was mentioned in the video, but AHIMA has a Certified Health Data Analyst (CHDA) designation. Look into it 😊❤ Thanks for these videos
Thanks for this information, I am at Penn Foster and I feel like I was taking it in vain, I am still interested in taking your course on some of the things they don't cover.
Q I wanted to know if there is a need, demand for nurse coders bc i I can't find any jobs on indeed so I feel like I'm studying in vain. I also wanted to know if the coding cert will make me more qualified for insurance jobs like blue cross blue shield.
When searching for jobs on these sites, your searches have to be very specific. Your program should be offering information on how to properly search for jobs.
Good morning
New subscriber. Good video
Thank you so much!!
I learned alot on this live I never even thought to look at the OIG compliance policy to understand if my company is following the rules to protect myself. I will be looking into this at my facility.
I'm glad to hear you got some value from our discussion today!!! Compliance is highly underrated!
Q how does this information help me to code? This information is above my head. Sandra James
Hi Sandra! Thanks for tuning in! Compliance should not be above any coder's head. Every aspect of coding is based off of some kind of adherence to a policy (coding guidelines and conventions, institutional policy), so knowing how compliance is supposed to work will help you recognize when there could be a potential issue in your organization.
Great video! Very informative
I’ve been a nurse for 30 years as well. 15 as a LPN and 15 as RN. I’ve worked in over 30 facilities. I have traveled as a Nurse in California for 3 years. I now want to work from home. I’m studying at penn Foster. I’m glad I found you guys. Excited for this part of the Journey. 😊
Hello, good morning. Hi I’m a RN and I’m very interested and vested. I currently am going to Penn foster.
Good morning! Congratulations on making a decision and enrolling in school. My only advice to you is make you learn the coding guidelines inside and out!! That applies to ICD-10-CM and CPT. I wish you the best!! I hope you will stop by and watch us again!!
I wanted to make a comment about the coding nurse. I am an LPN with similar background experiences and I am I wanted to reach out and tell you I thank you for your video information and I’m interested in and coding. I’m in a coding class now and I would like to know about your experiences as a coding in a facility for a new beginner and where should I reach out or experience?
Hello! Thank you so much for tuning in and watching!! The best advice I can give you is to get your resume redone by a professional who specializes in the health information management industry. You can do a quick search on LinkedIn to find one. That is key because, nowadays, everything is online and if your resume doesn't have keywords to fit the job, it won't get to be seen by a potential employer. My first coding job was as a risk adjustment auditor. I got on the job training and my first employer only hired nurses. They no longer provide training. If you have more questions, let me know and I wish you the best of luck moving forward!!
I’m so glad I found your channel ! I am taking medical coding and billing. I have years of experience in nursing.
Best of luck to you and thank you for tuning into my channel!!!!
Wow, talk about having similar career pass. I’ve been an LPN for 40 years I’m 65 years old. I went back to cosmetology/barbering school and did that for a while. I have Parkinson’s now and I’m unable to stand on my legs and my feet and I was looking into coding which I’m in Coding Class now I met into it about halfway. I am really interested in doing the risk adjustment as you have done please forward any information that would help me get a job in your area of expertise. My name is rosemarie.
Yes! You hit every reason why we don’t want one on one patient care.
love you bro
Thank you for this video. I’m a RN looking into the CDI credential
How long can an insurance company do a retrospective audit?
Up to 2 years after the claim has been paid. CMS can go back even farther.
@The Coding Nurse wow! It's like a chess game to keep money. I've been a nurse for 20 years and thinking about venturing into auditing. What steps should I take? I've been in case management for 15 years so I understand some of the auditing language. But I need to know how to start. A lot of companies are looking for experience
