Out of respect for Peter Garrett as a fellow human being, his subseuquent appearance on 'Australian Story' (i.e. after this appearance on 'Te Ao with Moana') and the uploading of that interview by the 'Australian Broadcasting Corporation' to 'TH-cam' (which prompted my comment here... see below), I shall leave it at that. Please note: the Australian Broadcasting Corporation has disabled comments under the aforementioned 'Australian Story' episode. They state in the description of the video that appearing on 'Australian Story' requires a significant investment of time and energy. This is in the context of stating that not all have accepted their invitation to appear on the program because they are too busy. Of course, by implication Peter Garrett did make the time and energy sacrifice. Disclosure: it was watching that 'Australian Story' episode which has prompted my comment here. I chose this video featuring Peter Garrett as it most closely resembled the scope of the 'Australian Story' episode. At least so far as I was able to find. For anyone interested in what the treaty meant... in April 1840 a delegation of Ngapuhi rangatira went to Hobson to address their concerns regarding allegations by Pakeha that the Governor would overturn their status. Hobson discussed with Tamati Waka Nene, and on 27 April 1840 - one day before the Kaitaia treaty signing- issued a printed letter assuring them that the "Rangatiratanga of the Queen", exercised by the Kawana, lwould not trample down their rangatiratanga, but that the Kawana would diligently uphold the terms of the Treaty. In other words, the "Government of the Queen" was the exercise of Her authority on her behalf, as chief over chiefs. Too early to make a call on how this government is doing. They've inherited a complicated mess left by the previous government that tipped too far towards socialism whch cost the country a fortune and created a huge debt from overspending, and also widened the chasm between Maori and the rest of the country from trying to push things through too fast and being sneaky and dictatorial about things eg. the 3 Waters debacle and secretly imposing hospital waiting lists priority based on race which of course really upset the majority of NZs population. We need to act as one with everyone treated equally - not be divisive - while still protecting our rich culture and heritage which is our identity. We're a great country with amazing people.
