I've not heard that it was a source of inspiration to scriptwriter/director Paul Hogan so it's probably coincidence, but I've always felt that the storyline of _Muriel's Wedding_ bears at least a passing resemblance to _Persuasion_ by Jane Austen
Love it.. "I'd rather swallow razor blades than drink with you." When they thought they were doing her a "favor" by inviting her! I also love when Tanya says "You don't have to think you're not good enough for us." and Rhonda simply says... "I don't." with this little smile. She's figured it out and she knows they suck!
I read somewhere that the bit where Muriel moves Ronda’s wig out of the way wasn’t scripted. The hair wasn’t supposed to block Muriel’s face so Toni had to move it out of the way and they just left it in the movie
Tittle female main character, Muriel,is fan of Abba's music . And she is dreaming about getting married. What worse ,people are humilating her, parents are strict ,especially father. Luckily, she gains friend,Rhonda. Movie was good ,and two scenes made me sing ,first is Waterloo and second when Muriel's dream becoming reality-her wedding with olimpian swim guy: "i do,i do" Funny movie:)
Toni Collette was a gem in this and she was so funny and she was in The 6th Sense and she got her first oscar nod and I loved her in that movie. She has proven herself as an actress. Nicole Kidman Hugh Jackman, Sam Reid, Rachel Griffith and she was in Blow with Johnny Depp. Very talented actors.
This scene masterfully depicted the bullies getting their just desserts. That segue from the mic drop takedown into the talent show, starring Rhonda and Muriel, was perfectly done with the musical score transition. It also exemplified, as the performance progressed, of Muriel's confidence growing, first reserved in the act and when her rivals start to implode, she really energizes, delivering a star performance and winning the competition.
Rhonda is the very best friend you could ever hope for. She's Samantha Jones in Sex and the City, your ride or die, the one who will sit in jail behind bars with you and say "wasn't that fun?"
Just watched the video when they kicked off Muriel from the group. It seems that Nicole is the biggest villain. At least Tanya looked a bit sorry about her. Nicole was the one who really went out for Muriel. She deserved that black eye.
Well remembered! Poor Muriel sobbing when they rejected her and saying ‘I can change’ and Nicole firing back ‘You’ll still be you’ That character was truly the mean girl from hell
Those bully girls were the EXACT Aussie counterparts to the kids I remember from my SoCal high school days in the 80’s. If it wasn’t for the accents I could easily believe I knew them. Brilliant.
Rhonda u beauty

I've always liked Rachel Griffiths with her honest raw humour; her and Toni Collette were so good together when they did this film.

This is what us neurodivergent mean when we say we're different. 🤓. We aren't "pick mes" we ARE different. 😉

Don't know if this happened in other countries, but in Spain, this movie became huge between gay community.
