Have you ever thought about what it's like to tackle a 100-mile bike ride? If so, you’re in for a treat with this video! When I decided to get back on my bike after a long break, I found myself chatting with folks at the bike shop. They kept asking, “So, how many miles do you plan on riding?” And that word kept popping up-century.
Honestly, the idea of riding 100 miles felt so far out of my reach at that point. I figured riding that much in a month would be a challenge! But here’s how it all began for me: I started with a simple 10-mile round trip, and yes, I treated myself to a lunch break along the way!

you are awesome! Love the humor...and information. Thanks for posting these videos. Looking forward to RAGBRAI 2025.
Need to see some more klunker and old schwinn videos!
Thanks for the video! When do they release the dates and route for 2025?
Usually, they have a route announcement party early in the year.
Century ride? No sweat!!! Did it three straight days on the final days of RAGBRAI this year. Now riding the century in a race is something I have not done yet -- maybe next year.
After you've gotten one under your belt, they seem to come easier. 100 in a race! Awesome goal for sure
Great story! How old were you when you got back into cycling? I got back into it at age 45 and I am now hooked. I am constantly searching for new and safe places to ride. I really enjoy your content Phil!
Thanks. I think I was 46 or 47. It's a way different "game" than back in my mid 20's. But I sure do enjoy it
Inspiring! Thanks for sharing
You are welcome. Thanks for watching
Thank you for sharing your cycling journey, Phil, great job!
Thanks. I hope it inspires people to get out on their bikes more
Suggested video topic is showing how using a small chain tool one may make one’s bike a single speed for self rescue if the rear derailleur detonates or hanger is broken off. I’ve gotten home from a backwoods MTB rides on one gear after at least one unfortunate derailleur mashing incident. Also, in the same video, you could show how to lock the derailer into an easy gear in case the cable breaks. Another TH-camr not to be named quit his RAGBRAI after neither he nor the bike repair stand he visited didn’t know this technique. At least it’d be good for awareness, if people don’t have the skills to do it themselves, they can at least ask the bike repair stand to do such a fix and save their ride.
Totally agree! I actually attended a workshop on just that. Self rescue single speed at a local bike shop. If you have the correct tool and a bit of knowledge. It can really make the difference between finishing your rolide or not .
Hey Phil, Thanks for the shout out! We really appreciate the support. It was great to meet you at Expo. Enjoy the Ride
It was great seeing you two as well. Looking forward to your next adventures
Thanks for the tips. I'm going to do my first ride in 2025 and your videos will really help.
Thanks! That's why I do these, it's a great event
Love me some Ryan and Beth. Thanks Phil!
They are awesome folks! Who knows, I might actually get to ride with them on their home turf one day.
Phil - missed seeing you at the Expo - we arrived a little later in the day. Had a great time at Ragbrai - video(s) to come.... take care!
Sorry we missed each other. Looking forward to seeing your videos
Finally got around to following your channel Phil. Have fun.
Miss ya buddy. I gotta get to WI sometime
I think you might need to re-title the video 2024 (instead of 2025) or it might get lost. The thumbnail graphic says 2024 but the YT title says 2025.
Thanks. I didn't catch that lol.
@@philandthedash1682 The sad part is, I genuinely had to ask myself… is this 2025? It’s not 2025, is it? Wait, is it? 🤦🏻♂️ I’m getting old. 😂
@jeffg.6110 I was thinking how could i not see that. It was pretty late. Argh. Thanks again
Got to say Hi to you on Sunday. May need you to come pick me up tomorrow. Man, this is hard!!!
Yea, the southern routes are always tough. Hang in there!
You had me at whiskey.
It was great to meet up with you again this year Phil. Thank you for the shout out and hope we can meet up when your at or meet Zydeco. Great job showing folks how awesome the RAGBRAI expo really is. Ryan & Beth
So if you don’t drink alcohol then $25/day. Got it :)
I do think if you take alcohol out of it $25 could still be tight.
I want a large and the tire-changing and chain repair vids and good job using a USA local instead of China!! Thanx
Very cool, I find that interesting as well, what are the odds to pair these Iowa dealer bikes 56 years later🤔
Agreed! The odds that they were both made in Chicago the same month as well. My friends was rescued from a thrift store in Madison WI. Thanks for watching
@@philandthedash1682 Both bikes appear to be complete and in good condition👍 I recently restored a 1974 Step through Suburban and she cleaned up well, you can always count on the Schwinn chrome to look like new decades later.
@that70sschwinn I don't know what they did back in the day to make that chrome last and come back so well! I'm consistently surprised by how well it comes back to life.
Is your charter service PBV?
No we did Central Iowa Charters. Nice group of folks
A few more points: 1) Charter services will not handle you unless you are registered for Ragbrai. 2) Pre-registration often starts earlier than the open registration. Pre-registration insures you are registered once open registration starts, especially if pre-registration exceeds allowed number. 3) You can purchase cancellation insurance as part of the registration. 4) Often you can purchase day passes after open registration ends if day passes are still available.
Was not aware of #3. We purchased a day pass for a rider last year the night before. Which was from the Ragbrai trailer. There is nothing like waiting till the last minute to decide.
Self supported is the way to go
Totally agree, it's a very different experience as well
Looking forward to it.....45 days from now. Let's roll. Nice explanation of 3-ways....
Thanks for watching
@ 8:14, as strobe front is ok for daytime light but NEVER at night - at night, only use solid white light for the front with the red blinking rear.
For sure. I've seen riders use a solid beam headlight with a white blinking accessory light. It was odd enough it made me take note of the rider. Definitely the exception not the rule.
A spare quick link for your chain is handy, too. As for pump, I carry a mini-pump that can also use CO2. And remember to put duct tape around the CO2 and toss in a couple of dollar bills to use as tire boots if you get a cut in the tire. Great suggestions.
Great additional items to add. Better safe than sorry
@@philandthedash1682 and the quick links fit in that little cap inside your cask.
Quick links and a chain breaker tool are things you'll never need.
I am doing Ragbrai by myself but I am looking forward to me time among 20K strangers :) I am going with ‘Out Of Staters’ charter!
Best of luck! Potentially 20k opportunities to make a new friend
Do you have to wear padded bike shorts with shammies and no underwear? Or will basic Bike/exercise shorts suffice?
Id highly recommend some padded bike shorts, it's going to be some long days in the saddle. Stop by aerotechdesigns.com and give them a look. Great products and super customer service. Use philandthedash at checkout for a discount.
My first Ragbrai this year!!!! So excited! Helpful video:)
Enjoy! Thanks for watching
i have a question, do you still have to pay the $250 dollars even if you keep your luggage in your car? please let me know if you do happen to know because it would really help me a lot
Yes. You still have to / should pay the registration fee. Many things aside from luggage transfer require the fee. Like the SAG service for instance
Training in Utah at 5300' elevation. Hope that gives me an edge.
It sure will help! Plus, it's Utah, so that's always a bonus. Lovely state.
Once I started riding gravel bikes, I switched all my pedals and shoes to mountain bike shoes. No one notices even on group road rides until we hop off and I can walk pretty normal vs. road clips. Shimano XC shoes and Crank Bros clips work for me for every bike, now.
I like my SPD setup for that same reason. Off the bike, I don't want to walk around uphill all day. Thanks for watching
Thinking of doing this event in 2025 👌
Great. It's definitely a bucket list event
Don't think, just do. 🙂
Our team/group has a group text and we time stamp our mesages so when you do get service you have a rough idea where people are or were and when. If you're camping in public grounds. Ear plugs, sleep mask and for males a 20 oz. empty Gatorade bottle.
Great Tip - adding the time stamp to the messages. I know many times that the messages don't come in, in the same order they were sent. YES to the ear plugs, why do I always camp by the loudest sleepers... LOL Thanks for watching
The best piece of advice I could give is to know yourself. If you dont enjoy being in crowds 24/7 for the entirety of RAGBRAI, dont waste your time. I couldnt believe how uncomfortable the entire experience was. I love camping, I love cycling long distances, but dealing with inconsiderate people all day every day was one of the worst experiences in my life. Dont get me started on the bathroom situiation pr how much it costs to eat a decent meal. Never again.
That's great advice! It's not for everyone, for sure. I think that could be said for most larger rides. That said, I also am surprised how strung out the riders get in some sections. Then bam, over the ridge, there's a beer bus and band playing. Or folks are waiting for a train to pass. Thanks for sharing and watching.
The idea of this ride stresses me out. Every picture and video I see is full of people doing absolutely insane stuff, so much unsafe behavior and underprepared riders, it just looks like an accident waiting to happen. I’d be way more stoked to try it if the general competence of the riders was higher. This would be a fun route to do as a 1-day ride. A good group could easily be done in 18-20 hours.
I agree. There are many riders that don't understand what riding in a group mean for them the individual. Last year, the rider numbers were way up, as well as the times I saw the ambulance go by.
Lost in a small Iowa farm town? :) I know several of the small towns that RAGBRAI will be going through this year, and I'm glad I'm not doing it. Its going to be a Hilly Hell.
Yeah I seem to recall them saying this was one of the top 3 hilly routes
thanks Phil for taking the time to share your knowledge. maybe our paths will cross at Ragrbai this year and you can fill me in on what, or who, the "Dash" is all about...
You are welcome I hope so too! Oh and I keep telling myself I'm going to make a video explaining the "dash" I gotta get that on the calendar. Thanks for watching
Great job Phil, I like the suggestion on the gloves. We have a box and I always forget about them. Especially great for the Butt’r in the morning 😅 Ryno
Ah, the morning slathering..... lol.
Bike lights! A lot of riders last year started at 4am to beat the heat, riding in the dark
Yes and don't forget a blinking red one for the back.
Many still rode in the dark this year.
One piece of advice I never thought about is getting a replacement derailer hanger. This part is designed to break to protect the drive train. These are often bent during transport or if your bike gets knocked over and most are specific to the brand and model of your bike and could be hard to find at a repair shop.
I always think of these when I'm out mountain biking. Good tip and cheap insurance if you'd ever need it.
Cell phone/internet signals are very weak in South Iowa. Preload as much info as you can on your phone!
Great tip! There's some pockets along the route that I'm sure aren't on everyone's "nationwide " plans. Good to get as much stuff loaded that you can use offline.
Didn't have cell phone issues this year. Only overnight town with weak Internet signal was Atlantic but I had no issues in smaller towns. Go figure!!! Mount Pleasant got it right with those walls of charging outlets at the main campground. Wish other towns would take notes.
Thank You Sir
Most welcome
How about mesh bags or water resistant stuff sacks instead of plastic bags? Just get a waterproof duffel. I can’t imagine the amount of plastic waste Ragbrai produces every year!
It's a ton of plastic waste in each town with that many people, plates, cups, and so on. I've not found a mesh bag source for that gallon size. Our Patagonia duffel bags aren't waterproof, just water resistant. So I'm still using the zip locks. Which do get repurposed after the ride. I've also seen folks use the big dry bag like you'd see on a canoe trip. I feel the waterproof bags are out of many folks' price range, and they can use a bag they already have , beefing it up with the zip lock bags inside. Thanks for watching
@@philandthedash1682 you’re right, what the towns choose to use as far as plastic is not really in our control, but as bikepackers that enjoys camping in the woods, we can do our part individually. I’ve seen more mesh bags at canoe/kayak outfitters, even REI- water sports section. Naturally more likely near water recreation areas. Yes, most brand name waterproof duffels are priced too high, but there are some smaller companies who come out with decent ones at half the price of Patagonia.
It's ok if you are not mechanically inclined or don't have the right tools or pump. Most people have no problems stopping to help cyclists in distress. There's also the Air Force cyclist teams that are known to stop and help broken down cyclists. CO2 cartridges are nice to have but keep in mind it's a one-shot deal so carry that pump and tube. I've stopped to help cyclists that used up their CO2 cartridges but no pump and couldn't inflate that tire or had a spare tube but not the tools to change out. Just something to keep in mind.
Yeah, the Air Force team is a great asset to Ragbrai! Great point about having the stuff to change a tire even if you don't know how to use it. You are at least not using up some good Samaritans supplies.
May have already been mentioned but regarding energy bars, drinks, gels, etc. If not already in personal use, strongly suggest ‘testing’ any of these during training and not use them for the first time during the Ragbrai (or similar event). Your body may not react well with a particular brand, in general, or especially when your energy stores are depleted. An upset tummy (or worse lower intestinal distress) while out on the route, trail, course, etc., is no fun. Please do not ask why I suggest this … 😮
GREAT ADVICE! I stepped outside of my normal "tried and tested" energy items, on the route one year. I was kind of bonking and needed "something" and rode up on a stand giving away free samples. Didn't really like the taste, but WOW, it was much better than what was on the horizon for me... So now even when folks are handing out samples or there are items in a "goodie bag" I wait and try them when I'm home.
What happened to their ferret? I feel bad for them. Very sad. Hopefully they can ride next year.
Hey, Internet Stranger, my crotch hurts! Can you help me? 😂😂😂
Great tip on the Road ID. Couldn’t agree more!
I never want to use mine! But I don't want to leave home without it either. Thanks for watching.
Thx, Phil. I appreciate you trying to teach the masses!!!
You bet! Its a fun project for me. Some of these things were passed on to me by more experienced riders back in the day.
