Played this in the early 80s with a really good HS all-star band in Central Ohio which was probably about as good as a GOOD college big band. After studying orchestral music the past 35+ years and coming back to this...Oh my! That repeated middle section, going to the double dotted rhythms in the 4th repeat....absolute, shrieking genius! It's like a RUSH tune for big band!
Dude I am 100% sure that we played the same key and the only different arrangement was what instruments we had solo - this was an all county band, so they accepted about 15 out of 300 that tried out Brian Gonzalez
This tune sounds like crap on the ios app, only one channel of the stereo mix but fed into both sides. Very little brass heard. But on the web, sounds normal. WTF?
Who arranged it would be good in the description?
Just played drums for this at a concert-- I love this song

Because of this chart, I learned you could have a flat 9 AND a sharp 9 in the same chord. Go figure! Thanks, Thad.
Played this my first semester of college in lab band in 1986 at what's now Missouri State University in Springfield, MO. Always loved this song.
got to play this song in middle school, me being lead trumpet was so fun!! great piece!!

Was it by any chance the Columbus Youth Jazz Orchestra? Because if so, I'm a member right now and we're playing this song for our next concert
in my band the guitar solo is a Bari sax solo and it's awesome
In my band it's a soprano sax 😂
i play bari sax for this in my all county middle school jazz band

ElvyTheVelvy ! Oh yeah, with the twenty measures we get to play and the rest is all soli

Those brass soli sections are so tight! Rhythm section? Hah! Who needs 'em?
That is most likely done with Thad Jones as conductor.
People that play them because people don’t make tuba parts for jazz
@@MegaBanne u smart 😂😂 lol that makes sense now
god damn, they swing so hard!
this song doesn't swing...
lmao
This song is straight homie
@@Dominic_LaSalle 16th notes are swung the entire time, definitely not straight
@@philipwailes943 i played this piece in high school. i can tell you it’s written straight
Fun Fact: the soprano sax solo 2nd time starts on a high F# then goes to altissimo A
Big brain moment
That is definitely not safe sax. I enjoy it way too much.
lmaooooooooo
Dat brass though... :)
Amen to that!
I remember playing this my freshman year of high school...
