Icarnaval 2023 @ World's Largest Free Flying Festival (Coupe Icare, French Alps)
The Coupe Icare looks back at a rich tradition of about 50 years and is the world's largest festival for free flying. Thousands of people, enthusiasts for paragliding, hang gliding, paramotor, wingsuit, base jumping, miniwing, speed riding, and more aerial sports, gather up in the French Alps at Saint Hilaire to celebrate their passion. It is a big party, a mixture of flying, concerts, cinema, air shows and exibitions.
The most spectacular part of Coupe Icare is the Icarnaval, where the most creative paragliding pilots present their fanciful costumes and take off in front of a cheering crowd. This video tries to capture the highlights of this fantastic show and to present them in an interesting and varied way.

It is very interesting to watch the paraglider pilots take off with their competition gliders. These high aspect ratio wings are much more challenging to take off (and fly) than the average casual club pilot paraglider. In return, these wings offer a significantly better glide ratio, especially when flown at accelerated speed.

90% of the people in this video skip the CONTROL PHASE... just run and hope for the best... thats is how accidents happen. NEVER skip the control phase !!!!
I'm not shure if it's 90% But you are right of course, control phase is very important! This video doesnt show how it should be done, it just shows reality.

Hi, a while ago my gf and me were in Tolmin and just did a hike and we saw at least 100 paragliders coming from seemingly out of nowhere. We were totally amazed at the sight and I had a camera on me and took some amazing pictures. I now want to send these pictures to the event organisers if there was an event to see if they want them. Can someone help me out?

Question: why do paraglider not have a rigid - yet light-weight - structure at the front to prevent the sail collapsing in case of wind turbulence?
Because its not working. They tried it in the early days. In case of turbulence, the wing will not collaps, but it can shoot very fast in unpredictable positions, leading to severe accidents. The collaps of the wing actually is not a bug, its a feature, it stops the wing in strong turbulences. Even though you allways try to prevent the wing from collapsing, when it happens its easy to handle in most cases if you did your homework. Anyways, if you have a big collapse, its a sign for 1) you are flying in too turbulent air 2) you need more training to fly your wing proper 3) you are flying a wing that is too demanding and you shoud step down to a more save / beginner wing, or 4) more than one of this factors.

Schade, hätte den Vortrag gern gehört, aber durch die absolut miserable Akustik ist das nicht zu machen. Nehmt nächstes Mal den Ton direkt vom Sprechermikrofon und nicht über den Raum auf. Bei der Aufnahme sind alle Störgeräusche lauter als der Sprecher, das ist Murks!
Danke für deinen Kommentar! Ja der Ton ist leider wirklich nicht gut. Es gab kein Sprecher-Mikrofon. Das nächste mal werde ich definitiv mehr auf die Tonqualität achten. Für dieses mal hab ich mir gedacht, besser den Vortrag so hochladen als garnicht. Aber ich werde in Zukunft sicher noch mehr zum Thermikfliegen machen, ws. auch eine Studio-Version zum TOP-System. Das wirst du dann auf meinem neuen Kanal @paraspotting finden. (Den habe ich erst vor einigen Monaten erstellt, um internationale und deutschsprachige Inhalte zu trennen). Ich mache selbst Videos und würde dir für soetwas ein Funk Ansteckmikro empfehlen. Die Systeme von Rode oder DJI kann im empfehlen und die 200€ sind gut investiert. Es gibt mittlerweile aber anscheinend auch gute low budget China Alternativen.

So I’m guessing this isn’t like a normal hike and fly race because nobody is really flying XC wings. Is it basically run to the top and fly down as fast as possible?
Its a relay race (mountain running, paragliding, biking, kayaking). The distance the paragliding pilots have to cover is easily within gliding range of a miniwing. First they run a short distance, then they fly to a different mountain lower down where they land on a ski slope. After running up again several hundred meters they finally glide down to the stadion where they hand over to the cyclists. You will find some more information in the video description. Interesting. - Least problems with forward launches. - Orange wings tend to crash more often 😁 - Many pilots don't feel their wings and have not understood the kinetics of launch properly.

Speed wing launch not really that interesting imo. They look like toy wings. Not much to get ‘em up.
Well, I think interest always occur in the head of the spectator. I would not agree its easyer to takeoff with miniwings. Yes, they inflate easily, but everithing is going much faster. Especially the acceleration phase until getting airborne is much more critical than with classic paragliders. If it looks easy, than because its a good pilot.

@@climbergregor1224 it looks like he just ran forward as soon as glider was laid out, without checking lines (race mode...). I would *assume* that he thought it was clear for a forward launch, but in reality there was a full twist of the lines.

@@cloudnineparagliding I see me walking to the start, than the video switched to other pilots starting after me. Doesnt matter. I am not the top-perfomer. 74th after the race. Next year there will be some things changed to get a better time. I am happy about my performance this year! Dont get me wrong. ;-)
