Hey, I think thats a good question. I guess it depends on the personal circumstences. In general, I would say that you would earn more in Switzerland in the long term than in Germany and that there are also great research opportunities in Switzerland. On the other Hand, I think there is more competition than in Germany because the country is so small and entry is harder.

I am not so educated on this because I am a local doctor here but I think that you need to do a language exam and a medical exam if you are a doctor from a non European country

There are no indications for eye diseases. Other treatment options are a better choice especially for glaucoma.

That’s a good question. Strabismus and eyelid surgery probably mostly. Some residents are able to learn cataract but that’s already difficult to find.

Yeah we have night shifts every month and work 42 hours / week. I guess it’s a bit subjective if that’s a good or bad lifestyle

I don’t take many notes anymore. Usually I read something a first time without any notes and after reading it a second time I take a few notes in my laptop. I use notion for this.

Thank you. You need to do a language exam first. Then you can start to work here and after a while you need to do a medical exam to get a full medical license here. I have a colleague from Venezuela who did this.

I guess Germany is a great option in general. During residency you are able to learn strabism surgery, I guess cataract and vitrectomy surgery for younger patients would be difficult to learn during residency.

Hi, I have only done a few things so far. I am able to do all Laser (Capsulotomy, Iridotomy, Trabeculoplasty, panretinal photocoagulation), Cyclophotocoagulation and amnion membrane graft. My goal is still to do Pterygium excision, Chalazion excision, Ptosis/Blepharoplasty surgeries, Strabism surgeries and cataract (this is probably very unrealistic) during residency.

I also read every week Ophthalmology Books, i keep Track of how much I read. The goal is to re read certain books every year. Furthermore I like to read a newspaper about ophthalmology I receive every month and the German guidelines and eye wiki and pub med

Hi, Ja das bezieht sich auf Gehälter im Krankenhaus, denke die Angaben passen dafür aber ganz okay, hab es grob formuliert, natürlich spielen die Faktoren die Sie genannt haben eine Rolle, soll aber auch erstmal eine grobe Orientierung darstellen, nicht zu komplex sein. In der Niederlassung gibt es dann andere Gehaltsklassen und auch größere Unterschiede je nach Fachrichtung und Selbstständigkeit oder Angestellten Status.

An Ophthalmology attending would earn around 100-120k before tax in a hospital. If you have your own private eye clinic, Salary would be up to 250k before tax (which is the second highest after radiology) and an employed ophthalmologist at a private clinic would earn around 100k. For GP with their own clinic, I guess it’s 165-200k. Yeah being a doctor is probably one of the higher paying regular jobs, same level like business jobs, lawyers. The salary is lower compared to United States and I think it’s not much cheaper here except that costs for med school are much cheaper

Thank you @billyrubin8667! I would say that you usually need both hands for doing surgeries. You need to hold instruments in both hands often and also need two hands to suture. However, it could be possible. I mean you could give it a try and see how it works. We have simulator for cataract surgeries and you could practice there to see if it’s possible for you.

Hi @georgesavvidvis2234, I am of course not so familiar with orthopedics but I would prefer a university hospital in a large city in Germany. I think you can learn a lot there and enjoy the advantage of living in a large city. The accidental hospital in Berlin-Marzahn seems to be great option too.

@user-sz4wo4rm2h The facts are that a GP earns on average around 160-200k euro per year before tax. I am sure its possible to increase this but I dont know exactly how high

How about locum gp salary per month
