How To Make/Fill Crown Molding Seams and Joints That Won't Crack or Separate In The Future
Crown molding seams and joints are some of hardest woodworking tricks to master. Luckily, I made this video and you can learn how to make them appear to be seamless.
Tip: if you do sand through and see brown mdf, it’s fine. Just prime it, let it dry and sand it lightly before you paint it.
I developed this technique to stop the crown molding joints from cracking later on due to shrinking, because I hate call backs. The backer with Titebond glue on it keeps the two pieces joined together for the long haul.

      Gotta look for a place that sells trim and moulding, maybe even a lumber yard. Most places like that will carry or at least be able to order corner pieces that match the profiles they sell. Some even make them in house.

    Nice work and great detailed work. I am trying to find these rounded corners for a 0.5" x 5.5" plain rectangular baseboard with an eased top corner but so far only found a few units at Contractor's Supply and I need 30 more but they refuse to custom order and said they will be back in stock "some day". Any ideas of places that sell them online? (HD and Lowe's don't carry them)

      Hmm. Not sure if they'll ship to you but a place here in Vegas carries nearly every trim you can think of at lower prices than anyone else by far. One Stop Trim Shop. Worth at least calling them and seeing what they can do.

    You would never work for me. Mitered corners will leave a crack in the joint after a few months no matter what you do. If you cope your joints, you won't have to drive wedges behind your trim to make it fit. Try running three and four-stage crown molding that way. Most all compound miter saws have stops for cutting crown molding flat. Take pride in your work.

      There’s more than one way to do it. I’ll cope it if it’s butting into an existing crown piece, for example you have to build a mantel all the way to the ceiling with existing crown molding up. With mdf coping sucks on crown, why not miter it and glue it together? It comes out perfect every time.

  • @dannyherbert67

    Just did my daughter's home in Taiwan. Used a normal miter box and hand saw. When I built my house 40 years ago did same with gypsum/cardboard cornices and wood cornices also with miter box and hacksaw. Never had a problem, at the time no internet or TH-cam.

    There are many "how to install casing videos". But not as many conclude with a close up on the brad nail holes nor do they do a good job of showing the angles and locations where you placed your brads. Thanks for this! Useful to me.

    I'm generally a cope guy but I'm not married to any method.( as some crown is actually uncopable) I'm a little more detailed if I'm mitering my corners though. I'll use an angle gauge to get the exact miter. I do use the shim method too. Good general tips for the beginner

    Do the cut angles change depending on the crown? If so, how to you know what angle to cut?

    • @crownmoldinginstaller6624
      @crownmoldinginstaller6624 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, some crown sits different on the wall/ceiling. There’s guides online for figuring out the angles.. if you cut a small test piece, hold it up on the ceiling so the bottom and top backside is flat against the walls. If it’s sitting more down on the wall or more of the crown is on the ceiling than the wall it’s a different angle. These angles are for when the crown sits about even between the ceiling and wall.

    The builder used MDF crown molding in my house when it was built. I've noticed three or four joints opening over the years and I've attempted to repair with caulk and paint. In the winter time they separate and in the summer they close. Do you have any recommendations on how to repair these joints to keep them from opening and closing without removing the crown molding? Thank you and I love videos.

    • @crownmoldinginstaller6624
      @crownmoldinginstaller6624 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, they probably didn’t use any glue in the joints when they installed the crown. Next time it cracks you can try filing the cracks with glue, waiting for that to dry and then sand and touch up paint. If you want to really get something on the back of the crown, once I had a call for this issue.. Before i took the crown down and redid it, I drilled a couple holes near the top so I could fit the tip of polyurethane adhesive in a caulking gun through them. I squeezed enough in there to cover both sides of the joint. Filled the holes I drilled with bondo and then painted it. They didn’t call me back so I think it worked!
