WAECO CF50/CF40 Fridge Repair - Replacement Controller
The exact controller as mine can be purchased on Amazon, though I can not find it on ebay any more.
There are many similar on eBay or Amazon though I haven’t tested any others. Ensure it is a 12v unit for both relay and power source. Some also come with a Thermistor which will work if yours isn’t. The Thermistor in mine was in the middle of the base, under the serial number sticker.

The Enginesound would be enough music in my ears ;)
Over this within seconds Music why
Because TH-cam copyrighted the music and removed it, that’s why. Hot tip, hit mute. 👍
All that so called rubbish you pulled out .. the filter board and 5volt supply to the control panel .. the control panel that drives the variable speed compressor .. then you thought you were going to remove the 1N compressor controller as well ? 😂😂 i bet that wouldn't have ended well ! So you pulled out the tech to install a cheap chinese piece of crap .. lost the variable speed and didnt bother to repkace the temo sensor with a waterproof one ? 😂 Dude your advice is completely flawed... use a good quality IR33 controller .. set up for 2 speed with water proof sensor .. that is the only way
Hey Richard, thanks for the kind words mate. I sure did pull it all out. Seeing as most of these end up in land fill when they die, I’m happy that mine and likely 100s more kept going with some “cheap chinese piece of crap”. Sounds like you’re a pro, so you do you mate and enjoy your non China expensive fix. 👌 Over 2 years on, mines still running strong 💪. Beers were ice cold today for Christmas. Merry Christmas 🎄
This is brilliant can you do a replacement thermostat on a CB40 too?
I’m not too sure sorry mate. Would need to pull it down and have a look at the controller
what tow bar you got?
Replaced it with a Hayman Reese HD bar. I didn’t trust the cast factory tow bar for recoveries.
okay thanks!@@ShedintheValley
Thanks man, I just fixed my fridge using this method! 👍🏻
Any update
I moved it on unfortunately. Not sure where it is these days.
Thanks heaps for this video mate, it was really helpful. My compressor controller was a slightly different model and I've mounted the controller slightly differently but used your ideas for it... th-cam.com/video/FxzA38xj6ec/w-d-xo.html Much appreciated, Matt
Great to see your vid Matt. Glad this helped!
Please, tell me tyre size on grey Land Cruiser. Thanks
Mate sorry for late reply. LT 265 70 17s in this video.
Thank you! I have a spare CFX 28 that has had something fail inside. Compressor runs and pulls down to 30 but I had it set to 0 deg f. Gonna yank all the guts out and use a aftermarket set up like you did . Thanks for sharing
What recovery Points are on the Prado. I'm looking to get recovery points for my prado 120 series
These are to suit a 150 Series. They fit nicely around the ARB bar. You can get them from eBay or places that sell RoadSafe brand too.
I have a run down of the Prado in my other video.
@@ShedintheValley ive checked your other video out and im surprised the fact that you put these mods on. I would appreciate it if you contacted me I really need help with modding my 120 Prado cheers
Just saw this video the day after I spent $100 on original Waeco parts. Will refer back next time though. Might even search for a broken fridge on marketplace.
That’s a shame! Could have fixed 5 for the price of that one part.
My waeco has decided to give up today. Are you able to do a list of what's needed and a video on how to do it step by step
It’s fairly straightforward. 4 wires and that’s about all it needs. I will though make a detailed step by step if I get another fridge to sort out.
Nice work. I'll be doing this if mine ever fails. Do you know if its possible to lock the original keypad on this model so the buttons can't be accidentally pressed?
Sorry I’m not sure Pat. No issues with the aftermarket controller. The buttons take a bit of force to change. Mind you, mines been set and forget.
great video. Where did you find that wheel cover> Looking for one just like that at 0:47
It’s off a FJ Cruiser. I had to fab up a bracket to make it fit, but a lot neater and also mounted a rear camera in it. I have to make another video shortly of how I built it
Can you still run it on 240v with this fix? Great video. Many thanks.
Unfortunately no, however I run a 240v to 12v transformer. Something like this. www.jaycar.com.au/12vdc-7-5a-switchmode-power-supply-mains-to-cigarette-lighter-socket/p/MP3575 There are also cheaper alternatives.
Your video will make me spend few thousand more on mine now..😂😂…. Nice job mate. Especially your ability to find some nice deals online, and not compromising on quality and money where it really matters.. 👍👍
With the age of the 120s now, after market parts can be sourced for good prices! We have just started a new project, a touring Dual Cab Ute, so watch this space for the new build!
🤩🤩🤩🤩
I don't know what else to say about the Prado 120, how much I love this car... by the way I've already driven a lot of very expensive cars
Mate what a excellent idea as we know the only problem with Waecos are their electronics, this idea completely removes the problem cheers mate I’m definitely doing this
Exactly.
Hi, this is extremely helpful, thank you. Can you please reply with a pointer on a compatible controller. I don't know how to start looking for one.
Hi Lee, try something like the STC-100A. Just make sure it’s the 12v model.
@@ShedintheValley Thanks! Now I see there are many 12v DC temp controllers with relay. What a deal they are only $10-$20. I have one on order that looks pretty good. I am looking forward to getting into the repair and my Waeco cf-50 back on the road. I bought in 2003 and this is the first time it's ever broken.
@@leefitzgerald5601 perfect. These earlier ones have the DanFoss compressor in them. They are great.
@@ShedintheValley I purchased mine in 2003. So long ago and it never failed until August 2021. If this repair fixes the problem, it will almost be better than new!
What's the lift and tyres on both?
Roughly 2.5” on both, and 265/70 17s
@@ShedintheValley what brand suspension?
I run Bilstein Stuts/Shocks and King Springs. Ryan is running Dobinson allround.
Tidy looking rig with some good electrical/electronics on board. Come do mine ahaha 🤣
Haha! Don’t have the time to finish the bits in mine. Electrical does take ages to do. Got a lot of respect for auto sparkies
I’m a technician in the fire industry and you’d think I’d eat this stuff up for breakfast but noooooo chance haha. Shed full of gear to wire up and install and that’s where it’ll stay until I cbf’d lol
Ay man I’ve got a modded out 2000 mustang Gt you think I can beat one of these ls400’s?
Hello mate, some great info here thanks. I'm having trouble trying to find an AC fan like the one you used, any advice would be appreciated. Cheers
Hi Andy, thanks for the comments. The AC fan was off ebay from a wrecker. They are hard to locate but if you keep an keen eye on gumtree/facebook etc can locate a Grande, they run them. Its not that well known of a mod (not like the trip computer!).Best of luck locating one.
@@ShedintheValley thanks mate, I'll try Tony's wreckers in Perth. Cheers
A huge of cycling. I am lucky to watch the cycling tour Italy 2020 here on the top of the mountain where I live, and the winner was an Australian young guy. Please visit my Channel and Subscribe if you like the content.
hi ive been trying to find a/c fan on ebay could you Please post the link thanks mate
Sick setup mate. I just brought the 09 TD prado which has not had the injectors replaced. It’s at 170 000 kms, do you recommend getting them done even if it’s still running well?
Caleb Howell sure do, but I would get it checked out first. Consider it insurance for your motor. Watch some of Anthony 4x4 Diesel for some good guidance.
Sweet 120's boys! Just got one. Some inspiration here for sure.
Hi Mate, nice mod's to make it functional. In regards to mounting camera and cable run (drilling through door), I came across a site that sold Prado mod accessories in SA and he makes M10 hollowed Bolts for that reason so you dont have to drill any holes. M10 Grade 8.8, Zinc plated, Heat treated, 25mm long. Cost $5 Look up @AMTS4x4 Facebook, Messenger. Email - amtsprado@gmail.com Can you select either camera in your dash system?
Also regarding your rear fridge and drawer setup, I also need the space in the back for carting crap around when not out bush and I have been looking around for a setup that can be taken out easily and quickly and uses the existing mounting points in car. Check out forbyfitouts.com.au . I saw them at last 4X4 show in Melb, quality gear with optional setups to choose from.
Chris Duxson yes AMTS makes some good gear. Yes to switch between cameras I have run a 3 way switch that allows me to switch between the 2. Power from reverse comes to the switch, then power to each camera from the switch when selected. As for RCA, I have the cameras going from 2 into 1 adapter. (Works because only one camera has power at a time). It’s been great.
How did you run the wires up to the roof rack camp lights? Via the passenger doors?
Rampy mate did it via doors but I didn’t like the look of the cables coming out that way. I took the strips off up the sides of the front windscreen and put cables up both sides, I also have one running up the rear from outside the tail light. I’ll take a video of how I did it and put it up for you.
@@ShedintheValley cheers mate
hi do you have the link of how to conect themo fan
Hi Mate Can you please inform me what brand roof rack , where we can purchase from
Sanjay Singh it’s from Jaram Roof Racks in Perth. I think it’s a copy of the track lander. Alloy and strong. Been very happy with it.
Those magnetic shades for the rear passengers, if they put windows down will they just blow out or are the magnets pretty strong?
Cameron Upton they are strong mate. Also come with little holders to make them sit in the Windows, though I haven’t used them. They fit perfectly to the windows. I also use the front window ones for the back window crossed over, you can see them in the video. Just jam them behind the trim panels.
What are those wheels 👌
BE GTS-AV in 20s.
what year is this? and why did it cost 3k for your injectors and pump?
Dan theman it’s a 2007. Injectors need to be replaced just as maintenance. I got the intake and EGR cleaned and acid bathed at the same time. That also included all labour which was a good price.
Have you had any issue with the bull bar touching the underside of the flare/guard when flexing off road ? wondering how much gap is between the top of your bull bar & bottom of flare ?
Volcanic I kept it pretty tight. Though I have replaced the body to chassis bushes which stops a bit of movement. It doesn’t rub when general off-roading. I would say it’s 20mm maybe a little less.
@@ShedintheValley Thx for the reply, were your bushes worn/compressed much ? I've been considering to renew mine though also thinking about a 1 - 1.5'' body lift but not sure yet what else will have to be modified..
Volcanic I haven’t body lifted, only suspension. There is a few things you would need to sort out including steering etc, and you will have a gap between bullbar and body you will need to fill the gap.
@@ShedintheValley Yeah cheers I will have to look into it more, just want to be able to squeeze 285x75x17 mud tyres in there with my 50mm lift and minimal body lift.
How did you mount the Arb rocker switches in the front console for your leds?
Fishing with Deeanno you can file out the plastic, then also file down the under dash panel to fit the switch panel upside down so all the switches are on top row. Factory mirror control is at the top.
@@ShedintheValley Awesome, Thanks!
Good to know about the 150 recovery points. Was gutted when i found out about the recovery points no longer fitted my 120s after installing a opposite lock bull bar.
Tim Reynolds yep bolt straight up.
Agree, interesting to know! I was told they would fit on ARB Bars with some mods but finding out that 150's bolt straight on is great. I bet most suppliers don't know that!
hey mate im like 99% sure that i won this car now, was it build no. 48 ? if so man i was wondering if you would consider giving me a call. i just want to know a bit more history about the vehicle. like are you the first owner ? things like that. i was wondering as well if you had the hsv book it was released with ? cheers scott
Great vid, great music good work. Looking forward to our 1st trip on the Holland Track in October 2014 : )
lol Tinted visor :P cant see much
Nice video! Do you remember what time of year you made the trip? It looks like the perfect amount of water on the track, in the dams etc.... Not just a dust bowl like when i did it :-)
Great video!!
