Note that the Osage left that hilltop village shortly after meeting French traders there, so their reason for leaving was probably illness related. Europeans were more immune to smallpox, for instance, than the Indians were, so the French could have brought the disease with them as some point, devastating the village population. After so many deaths, they probably burned their longhouses and vacated the area. Did the archeology done there note any evidence of significant burning at that time? Another possibility is that a wildfire swept through.

The incident at Haun's Mill took the life of the young son of John D Lee. The same John D Lee that was the ringleader at Mountain Meadows Massacre, Utah almost 20 years later. The killing committed there was certainly an act of personal vengeance.

I arrived in CG in 1970, age 6. People have hauled off the stones from Hermit's Cave since then, apparently. It looked like the original picture in this video in the early 1970's. I'm guessing the birds were cliff swallows. It looks like you could have driven up the road, made a U turn and come back and parked on the grass with your passenger window near the signs and historical marker. That was very interesting.

Ground swallows by the name you’ll understand their nests are on the ground. When you walk across the ground, they fear for their nests being disturbed. They obviously have some sort of nesting around this big rock or in it or on the ground around it they will swarm around you, but they will not attack.

That "Rock shelter" is a melted structure.

I live in Randolph county Illinois and worked for the County for almost 30 years.
