    13:26 from the Tynemouth Pool along past the old Preston Grange is very familiar to me. I was born in the old Preston Hospital (now Haswell Gardens), my Dad lives near the Spread Eagle pub & I have great memories of playing on the Foxhunters playing field (to the right of the road at 14:40). The Foxhunters Pub Im aware has been on the corner (15:07) for many many years. Despite having lived in the South, having family living in Tyneside means Ive visited regularly and I can remember those large trees on the Foxhunters playing field being nothing but smaller trees tied to posts in the late 70s/early 80s. The kids playground had one of those massive tall slides with a little wooden box you could sit in!! I miss the red asphalt covered roads, blue lampposts & the yellow/white Northern buses. Thank goodness the pool still survived all the changes

    Just out of curiosity, was that first 3-4 mins in Wallsend anywhere near the location used early on in the 1976 film The Likely Lads? There's a brief scene where James Bolam is in his XtraLite sales work van, complete with a set of speakers. He shouts out to Rodney Bewes "Move yourself Ferris-The hour of doom is at hand" as Bob is making his way over a zebra crossing, bewildered & confused 😅

    Miss the old toll plazas and paying the old fashioned way. I always used to ring ahead from Norfolk to find out how much change I would need. They should've kept two or three barriers in place but as usual, its all sbout saving the bother of having a technician down there to sort out problems. So much easier to send out fines instead. Our entire country is held to ransom by legal and insurance ba5t4rds

    Your 'historian' needs to do some research, so much not commented on like the salt pans, look at them on google satellite. You can see from watching all these Seaton Sluice videos how history gets forgotten or twisted, what surprises me is in how short a time, 60 years and so much forgotten or just plain wrong.

    If you look at the 1858 Ordnance Survey map, there are actually two North Shields stations shown, the one you show, and the one used today. Also at that time, Tynemouth also had two stations - the original one (now part of Mariner's Point), and Tynemouth Terminus, across the road from the original station on the site of the TA Centre now. The line you walked along ran inland from the coast, and joined what is now the Metro line at Monkseaton station, which was then called Whitley Junction.

  • @paulr9572
    @paulr9572 ปีที่แล้ว

    In the early 1970's, the Riverside line ran at peak times only to take workers to and from the shipyards. I once used it accidentally as a kid, as it left the Central Station from the same platforms as the other trains to the Coast, and it soon became packed with workers from the various yards. When work started in 1974 to convert the coastal rail loop to the Metro, it was closed forever.

    Mentioning Monkseaton High School reminds me of a friend who was a bit of a punk type in 1981 who got expelled for deciding to pelt the headmaster with yoghurt and eggs for a laugh. Now they see kids these days have no respect, pull the other one, there were rebels in my schooldays who could be just as bad.

    The old school at the top of Hawkey's Lane opposite the car dealers was Tynemouth High School, the town's grammar school until 1969, when it became a comprehensive. Both parents were clever enough to pass the old eleven plus and go to the High School in the 1950s. I think it's used as a further education college now.

    Do enjoy your stuff but unfortunately so much has changed over there its difficult to find a location point,my memory of the Coast Rd was when it was just two cars wide all the way to the coast,it dipped down at Jesmond where there was a lovely little theatre The Flora Robson playhouse,alas no more, but yet stands that magnificent building Wills cigaret factory which you didnt mention,even though it must have dispatched a couple of generations coughing to an early demise,I lived at Rosehill,and on the odd weekend when Dad was flush we would take the bus to the toon from Willington Square, a Knickerbocker Glory at Mark Tonys and a seat in the stalls at the Empire theatre,and you wouldnt call the king your uncle,them was the days!
