K2AV 160m FCP VERSUS 200 ft. BOG terminated at 140°

“ANT 1” is a K2AV 160m Folded Counterpoise, the transmit antenna at KA8SYV. “ANT 1/R*” is a 200 foot Beverage-on-Ground, terminated to 140°. This was installed as a receive antenna for 3Y0J. The 1220 kHz AM is in Cleveland, which isn’t at 140°, but the video demonstrates how much increasing the SNR aids copy. GL in the chase and see ya in the pileups! 73 DE KA8SYV

RFI On KH1/KH7Z FT8 Frequency
มุมมอง 896 ปีที่แล้ว
The Honeywell HPA300 Allergen Remover was causing significant RFI on 20m and other bands. I discovered this after making the video. This unit was plugged in but powered OFF. It had two toroidal chokes on the power lead because I knew it was sensitive to RF from my ham radio transmitter. I only recently detected the interference in the 20m digital subband. I hope this helps someone their own RFI...

Heathkit HW-8 Modifications

This is my vintage QRP tinkering project. The audio-derived S-meter is available on KC9ON's cool website, among other sites. The LED is a 5mm (forward voltage 2.4 V at 20 mA) with 680 ohm 0.5 W resistor in series. I protected the connections with heat-shrink, to prevent accidental short-circuits. Transistor Q1 has been replaced with an MPF 102. More mods are planned. The HW-8 has been called "t...
great presentation but man your audio is very quiet...
Thanks and sorry, @butchdingle1000, I will be conscious of this in future clips. VY 73, Frank

Nice presentation. Like the tower with beam antennas. 73 de N9NY
I am building this antenna. And hung up finishing the FCP wires to get them straight because of a heat wave we are in. The bare wire is really hard to tame down and get to be straight. Looks like you had better luck. I saw a video using nylon jaws on pliers and me and my son will try to get the FCP looking better. I'll have 60 feet vertical and abt 90 feet horiz. Most builders are using about 150 feet total of antenna wire. Did you look at your antenna with an analyzer? Should be near 0 reactance and probably have a resistance of 30 ohms. You can use a healthy antenna tuner or if you are barefoot the tuner in your radio should be ok. Sounds like you are already having fun there.
Best wishes to you, Adrian. I hope to work you at the end of summer/ start of autumn on 160m! I haven't looked at the parameters with an analyzer, just an SWR bridge. Mine is about 2:1 SWR at 1840 Mhz. I use the automatic transmatch on my amp (most of the time) and it seems to play well. Current 160m DXCC is 136 worked, 132 confirmed.. VY 73 DE KA8SYV
Incidentally, I've made provision to use a separate low-noise receive antenna on my HW-8. Just lift the capacitor to the receive circuits and add it there. A couple of 1N4148 diodes across the receive input helps protect it, but the muting circuits still works. Now I can hear stuff that was buried under noise from my wire antenna that I now only use for transmitting.
Great little old rigs! I've had quite a few HW-8s through my hands. As you say they all have their individual quirks! They can't compete with modern rigs, but that's not the point is it?
I agree. For me, CW QRP rigs are just fun to tinker with and modify. They help me learn a little about analog electronics and provide that warm, fuzzy feeling when I can get a nice flea powered QSO :) VY 73 DE KA8SYV
Update: I have now used this antenna for about a year and have all QSLs needed for 160m DXCC. This installation was helped by the addition of a "beverage on ground" (BOG) antenna pointed to 60 degrees. I plan to install at least one more BOG, but a reversible version to improve station performance. 73 de ka8syv
Interesting design...first time I have seen this. Thank you for showing this...73! de WX0V
Nice presentation, from AB8RL
Good job Frank! A lot of the fun of these radios is getting them up and running and making your own modifications to make 'em work that much better. Glad the LED strip worked out for you, it was an almost perfect solution to lighting the dial. Recommend John KC9ON (kc9on dot com) for lots of goodies to fix up QRP rigs. Have fun! 73 - Dino KL0S
Thanks, Dino. Not sure why this video didn't upload in HD ... I'll be sure to double check that next time. 73
@@ka8syv203 What a nice surprise to see you relooked the comments for your video. Hopefully you've had time to do some of the other mods and are still enjoying your rig. 73 - Dino KLØS
