After leaving my job to follow my passion, I moved back to Japan, bought a camper van, and I now embrace life on the road. Join me as I explore Japan’s breathtaking landscapes, vibrant cities, hidden trails, and sacred sites, all while living minimally and intentionally. Learn unique travel insights, practical van living tips, and experience hiking adventures and inspiring stories from my off-the-beaten-path journeys across Japan.
Winter Van Life through Japan‘s Serene Snowy Scenes
Winter is here, but that doesn't mean I'm going to escape to warmer southern temperatures. Quite the opposite, I decided to fully embrace the cold and migrate further north! Along the way, I stopped by Yamanashi and Nagano to climb to the highest outdoor onsen in Japan, then Yamagata to experience a snow festival, and finally Aomori to see its majestic castle and a beautiful shrine covered in snow.

Not the Typical Golden Route: 10-Day Winter Itinerary with My Family in Japan
This video is completely different from the usual videos, as my family visited me in Japan for the first time! Fortunately, they did not have too many expectations, so I had free reign to design an itinerary that they would enjoy as first time visitors, and that I would enjoy as someone who has lived here for almost two years and done the "Golden Route" several times. Therefore, it ends up bein...

Most people know the city of Tokyo, but what many do NOT know is that the prefecture of Tokyo extends well into the mountains to the west of the city. Here, you can find crystal clear waters, steep river valleys, and sleepy mountain villages. It's the perfect escape from the restless city life. On this two day adventure, you will join me in my typical life in my camping van while I explore the ...

How Fukushima Stole my Heart in Just 3 Days | Van Life Japan As I rounded out my van trip through Tohoku, Fukushima was the last prefecture I had to cross through to make it back to Kanto. I only had three days, but that was enough for this beautiful prefecture to utterly steal my heart. From the volcanic Asahi-Bandai National Park, to the winding river valleys of Aizu, this prefecture will com...

Van Life Japan | The Adventure Starts!
This was a wonderful video! I enjoyed seeing your travels in beautiful Japan. While some areas are crowded with tourists, there are also places where only a few foreigners visit. Thank you for showcasing the beauty of winter in Japan. As a Japanese, I am excited to visit Gujo Hachiman in the near future.
I came across this video and was reminded of how beautiful Japan is. Even though I usually prefer traveling abroad, it made me want to explore my own country more. I really appreciate the way you showcased Japan - it's amazing! Also, I’m so happy that you and your family seem to have had a wonderful time! ☺
Wow! I really love your videos! I found your channel yesterday and watched all the videos yesterday and today. Amazing! I was born and raised in a small city call Maizuru in Kyoto prefecture it’s by the ocean but I moved to NYC over 20 yrs ago. Recent years, I started visiting my country more often, traveling different cities but never been interested in “Tohoku” before. Also I didn’t like winter time in Japan, I feel like it’s wet and chilly and Japanese houses are generally colder than houses of NYC in winter. But after I watched your videos, I was so impressed the way you shoot videos. (I’m a photographer/artist) Everything looks so beautiful. These colors!! Now i remember how much I enjoyed snow when I was a kid in country side in Japan. My school trip was skiing in Nagano! It was so beautiful, but i totally forgot about that. Now I want to go to Tohoku in Winter. Thank you so much for sharing these. I will keep watching!
Incredible
Great video Ryan, we recently subscribed to your channel and are currently saving to buy a camper van and travel round Japan. Love your videos
Yooo I’m stoked we got to meet up for Yamanashi and Nagano! You put this together so well dude 👌🏼
Hey Ryan, watching your videos from Toronto. How amazing. One question - what kind of camera do you use to make your videos? Safe travels!
Your choice is perfect to come to the new year in Japan. I want to go to the Zenkouji. But I’ve never been there yet. I love Nagano!!! I love your video☺️ Just I want to let you know that you ate Obanyaki(大判焼き) it's not dorayaki. I want you to go to Takayama in Gifu. That place is the traditional area where streets and buildings are a lot the same as Gujyohachiman.
Another superbly shot and edited video! Thank you. It was such a pleasure to watch.
I hope you can visit Niseko. Australians make up the largest foreign population. Very popular as a summer snow holiday especially because travel is shorter than Europe with minimal time difference. Your videos are sublime to watch. Many thanks Ryan.
@@paulkazzer thanks very much Paul! I’m actually in Niseko as I write this comment haha. Indeed lots of Australians, but also lots of people from elsewhere around the world. Truly an international ski hub!
how did you go about buying your van? looking at doing the same in a month or so and would love some guidance! maybe a video, love what you're creating!
@@nikitadakers7604 thank you! I do plan on making a video at some point or some kind of guide 🤔 basically found one on marketplace, but that’s the easy part. The hard part is finding an address to get a registered parking spot. Then you have to do the transfer of ownership at a local transport bureau, but it’s fairly straight forward if you speak a bit of Japanese.
It looks sooo cold! Vanlife is definitely challenging in cold temperatures, although the crazy hot weather here in Southeast Asia is also challenging from time to time 😅 The snow on the Japanse architecture just makes it all so cinematic 😍
@@offthemainroad yesss I’m dreading the Japanese summer, it’s so hot and humid too 😭 totally agree, the snow just adds to the already beautiful shrines/temples/castles!
@@ryan_bednar Absolutely! 😍
Love that you take us along on the journey together with your family! It's so nice to get a more in dept view of this country through your eyes. Thanks for sharing!
@@offthemainroad I’m really glad I documented it not only for our sake, but I hope lots of others can benefit from it to venture off the main tourist path a bit!
@@ryan_bednar Hahaa, see what you did there 👀 and absolutely loving it 😉😍
Your brothers are funny haha 😅
😂😂😂
Such a lovely trip and wonderful camera work! Hope your family enjoyed 💙
Great work! Thank you for introducing good places of our country! One question! What camera were you using for shooting video?
@@Marx8788 thanks! Sony zve1 and iPhone 15 pro max
@ thanks!!!!
I live in Nagano Prefecture. There are a lot of foreign tourists, so I was curious about how everyone would go sightseeing.and I didn't understand why here’s a good place to have so many people。 but I noticed from your video that there was a good place nearby. And thank you for having fun😊
Thank you for coming to Hirosaki. I'm glad that thanks to you, more people are getting to know Hirosaki.
I’m Japanese. This was a wonderful video that truly captured the beauty of Japan. I appreciate you introducing it in such a lovely way. It also made me rediscover the charm of my own country. Thank you!
I love your sensibility ❤️
I rarely take the time to watch YT videos fully. However, yours have been an absolutely dream to see your travels in the camper! Hope you guys stay safe in the poor weather conditions over there atm
what camera is it?
You have an incredible talent to capture the beauty with your camera! Just breathtaking!
Hope you're staying safe and warm in all that snow! Such great sights, I love the contrast between the snow and the red shrines and torii is just absolutely amazing.
@@KaratedudeYT thanks a lot! Agreed, such a pleasing contrast 👌🏼
Another great video Ryan. Proving that Japans scenery never disappoints to amaze us. Thank you.
