As the rising voice of America's most ethnically diverse generation of young people, 26-year-old Amanda Pascali writes songs that speak to the experience of growing up as a first-generation American. In 2023 her popularity exploded on social media following several viral videos of her song translations. Amanda’s music, now coined, Immigrant American Folk delivers a powerful narrative on being, “too foreign for here, too foreign for home, and never enough for both.”
Endorsed by the US State Department and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a Fulbright Fellow, she pioneered the first comprehensive project to translate and revitalize Sicilian folk songs. Blending folk/Americana influences with Mediterranean, Balkan, and Latin rhythms Pascali’s songs are powerful tales of America told through the eyes of immigrants and those who have always felt like the “other”.

Over The Sea - Amanda Pascali
As the daughter of immigrants in the United States, I am deeply moved by the stories of those who risk everything in search of hope, because this is my story. This song reflects on the ever-evolving face of the "immigrant." Across nationalities, languages, and time periods, their stories embody the spirit and challenges of their specific moment in history. They remind us of the harsh realities of a human race in constant motion-searching, striving, surviving.
I wrote "Over the Sea" about the migrant crisis in the Mediterranean. This song was fueled by the great discomfort I felt when I read about migrants who often die trying to cross the sea to arrive in Southern Europe. Since writing this song, I’ve found its meaning growing even more urgent-beyond the Mediterranean, around the world, and especially in my own home: the United States. I’m American but my mother’s family is from Messina. Been looking for some good Sicilian folk music to play. This is great. I like the strumming pattern you are using I’m gonna try that.
