Trying to live a more sustainable lifestyle through growing and raising our own food and powering our farm by the sun. We are always learning and willing to share our successes and failures. Homesteading is a passion. Being more connected to where our food comes from, and we do not mean the grocery store. Finding and making better choices in a world with a vulnerable food system. Even though we are still required to purchase some of our food we are getting more independent every day. Come with us on our journey.
Last Harvest of Carrots and Potatoes...almost
The ground is starting to freeze and we need to get the last of our Carrots and Potatoes out of the ground before they are frozen in. We have a small amount of Carrots we will leave in the High Tunnel and harvest on a winter thaw. #homesteading #gardening #vegetables

Starting a New Farm in our 60's. What are we thinking?
มุมมอง 2.6Kหลายเดือนก่อน
We purchased some new farmland. We have always wanted to expand our farming but we are limited by the amount of open land that we currently have. Some of the things we would like to add is a Dairy Cow and other Cattle, more High Tunnel space and an Orchard to mention a few. We were presented with the opportunity to purchase a piece of Farmland in the Farmland Preservation Program. We did our re...
The Easy Way. How to Turn Your Luffa into Sponges.
มุมมอง 5562 หลายเดือนก่อน
We found an easier way to make our Luffa into Sponges. We love to use these All Natural Sponges. They clean well and when they are no longer usable you can place them in your compost and return them to the soil. We have been growing Luffa for a couple years now. We have found our season is a bit short and we cannot dry them completely on the vine before the first frost so we have learned how to...
This Harvest of Carrots amazed us.
มุมมอง 1172 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is our second Carrot Harvest this fall. We did not have time to keep this bed weeded and it was really neglected. We still managed to have a great crop of Carrots. We still have one more bed to pick this fall but we are going to leave them in the ground as long as we can. Maybe even until winter if the weather stays mild. #garden #vegetables #homesteading
Starting the Fall Potato Harvest. We really dig our Potatoes.

We do 3 planting of Potatoes. One in early March in our High Tunnel. One in May outside and a third in our High Tunnel in early August. This allows us to have fresh Potatoes all summer and a supply for canning in the fall. We have not found a way to store Potatoes long term unprocessed in our home so we pressure can a good supply for winter. We have tried to store unwashed Potatoes in our basem...
Making a Quick, Fresh Picked Chili Pepper Hot Sauce
มุมมอง 1912 หลายเดือนก่อน
It is time to pick some of our Chili Peppers. I decided to make a Quick Hot Sauce to enjoy on some of our Chicken Wings. This is a true homestead meal. We used chili peppers and garlic from our garden, honey from our bees, and wings from our own pasture raised Freedom Ranger Chickens. We get a great deal of satisfaction when we can eat food we grew ourselves.
Can you grow Carrots without weeding? See what happened.
มุมมอง 1393 หลายเดือนก่อน
Our Carrot Bed got away from us and the weeds took over. We did an experiment in one of our raised beds by just broadcasting the seeds over the soil instead of in rows. After about 60 days the weeds took over and we just let them go. See what we ended up with in this neglected raised garden bed. Carrots have always been one of the more difficult vegetables for us to grow. But maybe we just need...
Easy Way to Save Tomato Seeds
มุมมอง 313 หลายเดือนก่อน
It not hard to save your Tomato and many other vegetable seeds as long as they are not Hybrid Varieties. We save most our seeds every year as this allows us to always have the variety we want and it helps the plants to get better each year as they acclimate to our specific climate. In this video we will show you how we save Amish Paste Tomato Seeds but you can use this process to save other non...

Introducing new Chickens to our Flock
มุมมอง 1184 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is the method we prefer to use for introducing new egg layers to our flock. We have a small amount of egg layers so it is always important for us to have good laying hens. We usually get 2-3 new egg layer in late summer so that they will lay all winter. We like to have at least 4-5 good laying hens at any time. We let the older ladies who have stopped laying live out the rest of their live...
2024 Meat Bird Processing Costs
มุมมอง 2885 หลายเดือนก่อน
Well our 2024 batch of Meat Birds is in the freezer. We processed 28 Freedom Rangers Chickens and 8 Broad Breasted White Turkeys. This will be enough poultry to last us until next year. This is such a great idea, thankyou. So you say it will last about 1 year in a glass jar like you have put it in and then store it in the pantry?
Me likey likey 😍 ... Thx for your demo

Do you have a list of materials and tools you used?
Unfortunately I do not have a materials list. I tend to work out of my head. John Sascovich’s book is worth getting. It has a materials list but I substituted cedar lumber. It is a bit more expensive but it has no chemicals like pressure treated and I feel it will last. Our first chicken tractor is 4 years old and shows little signs of deterioration. The modifications I did were with materials I already had from other projects. You can built the entire chicken tractor with just a circular saw and drill driver and stapler. I used a cordless router to make the half lap joints but you can use the circular saw also. You will need a metal saw of some type to cut the metal for the wheel modifications. Very good info! I have so much basil that I allow to die because I thought drying it was too much of a time investment. Thank you!
You’re welcome, glad you found this helpful. You can do many other herbs in the microwave also. This has been a real time saver for us.
How do you amend your New England soil for carrots? Just grass and leaves? Shredded leaves? I've amended carrot beds with sphagnum moss, shredded leaves and it still compacted. Gave up on carrots. They are usually very small... Fellow New Englander in R.I.
@@josepharchambault8368 First we use a broad fork on the soil. The only amendment at planting is bone meal, compost or all purpose organic fertilizer (plant-tone). Once they get established we will mulch with cut grass. We use our grass clippings to mulch all of our gardens. We believe in always keeping the soil covered. In the fall we mulch everything with the leaves and grass clippings we collect with our mower. We have had the same problem with small carrots in new beds and this year we neglected them badly and they did pretty good. We also rotate our planting beds every year. Keep trying. Good luck.
Its Amazing... 😊
Thank you.

I saw a video were they soaked the nuts for 24 hours before cracking , I tried it and it does work well. You do have to put the nut pieces in a dehydrator after to get them to crisp up after using the soaking method.

I dried my butternuts with the husks on. The husks dried so thin they didnt effect cracking the nuts at all.

So you nuked it 😢 Research microwaves
Thanks for sharing. What is alternative for the paper plates?
We have not used an alternative but we do reuse our paper plates and paper towels so we do not waste them. A microwavable plate should work or you may be able to put them in the paper towels directly on the turntable in the microwave. Let us know how you make out. Thanks for watching.
I use the microvave also sometimes for laurerleaves.

I wish I would have that, much Basil. I love Basil Pesto and, 630 ml costs $16.00 and, I don't think I would be drying it!..xoxo
Nothing beats fresh Basil. We do make plenty of Pesto too but it is always nice to preserve the extra for winter time. Thanks for watching.
Can you use this same method for Cuban oregano and thyme?
It should work. Just make sure to check it every 30 seconds. Different herbs will take different drying times. Let us know how it comes out. Thanks for watching.
Does this microwave technique also work for other herbs?
Yes it does. We have used it on Parsley, Chives, and Dill with great success. Just make sure to do 30 second intervals because they may take less than 2 minutes. Thanks for watching.
