3 Levels of Self-Judgment Musicians Face
One has to wonder how Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher would amaze their audience by literally doing nothing. He had fans just fixated on him for 2 hours.
This was a really cool perspective to look at her performances through. Thank you for sharing! I think Chappell's Tiny Desk performance may be different enough to do another analysis on. But I could just be really obsessed with Chappell Roan.
Hey sumgirl! Thanks for watching. Chappell's Tink Desk is extremely good. If you like Tiny Desk in general, I've got a whole Tiny Desk episode in this series. Are you an artist?
Music is definitely my therapy. I'm not being dramatic when I say I'd die without it. Sidenote: she gives me major Magenta from RHPS vibes 😁
I don't know RHPS but this might be the sign to finally watch it!
please do michael jackson
The goat of all goats. I will absolutely do MJ asap. Thanks Eric.
I can only get performers unleashed when they know their material form from top to bottom. You set a structure, but you have to be flexible. It’s not a cage but a safe place to rely on. That is set by rehearsals as a safe place to go. The structure has to exist because you may have a good day, and the next day you are off. Rehearsals are the key, and if you are willing to do them, even on a treadmill, you are on the right track. Chappell Roan the Master at Rehearsals. ❤ Great video Luther I’m following you 😊
Thanks for the detailed comment David. Very cool to hear it from a choreographer's point of view. Structure is safety. Absolutely.
I loved this breakdown so much, I’m not an artist yet, but it’s very interesting to take notes of all of these things :) (Edit, would love to see you break down Lady Gaga’s artRAVE concerts, definitely one of the best concerts I’ve ever watched, Gaga is so captivating with her art)
Gaga! Great idea I'll put it on the list. Thanks for being here Novaaa!
Id love to see you do a review of her acl proformance to see your thoughts on the changes. She is such an amazing proformer and i cannot stop watching every live i can find.
I'll look that one up, thanks mmm!
she reminds me of freddie mercury so much! i can clearly see that she took inspiration from him. both very high energy and engaged with the crowd.
I have been telling people i think she might be his reincarnation. I definitely havn't felt this much joy in music since i was a child listening to the Beatles and Queen.
Interesting observation Valerie. Has she mentioned Freddie as an inspiration?
@@mmminno Wow! Very cool to hear.
@Luthermallory yes! she said that she watched bohemian rhapsody the movie, and then she watched the Live Aid concert and watching Queen perform "Radio Gaga" was what made her go into pop music.
@@valerie8679 Ah! Makes sense then. Thanks for the research V. Are you an artist?
as a queer woman, i would give just about anything to experience pink pony club live! it's such a joyful song, an anthem of freedom, of being true to your authentic self, and chapell roan has embodied that every time in all the footage i've watched of her performing it. it's just transcendent--a spiritual experience, as you so aptly pointed out. it brings me to tears every time.
Im already told my frugal wife to prepare to let us spend like 500$ to see her because I'm already a full swifty level fan and i want to see her live like my hope dreams depend on it. Haha
Ya! It really does something intense to people. This live performance takes off to another plane!!
Lead to queer ecstatic joy.

Love these videos mate! I have a bunch of suggestions I’d love to see breakdowns of. Any Tyler The Creator performance, Brockhampton at 2018 Camp Flog Gnaw, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Motley Crüe
Much appreciated BBTV! I'll put these on the list. Tyler is a really interesting idea and I haven't done anything resembling hiphop yet in the series.
The1975 is my fav band. I’ve been a fan for 8 years. I created so much art (drawings) inspired by them. I saw this tour twice and it was just pure joy and so moving. The guys are so good at what they do, and it’s so authentic and earnest. They’ve been together for 20 years and it shows. I loved your video. I really recommend you to check out twenty one pilots, their liveshows are really unique and tyler created a whole world and story with the last four albums, simply put a metaphor for depression and anxiety… and their performance is just insane. Love from switzerland:)
@frankiexx806 hey Frankie! 21 pilots has been suggested a few times. I will absolutely do it asap. Maybe even next week. Thanks for coming through
Nice, excited to see it:) no stress tho
Great vid
Thanks g0th!
I think the classical and jazz world has a lot to offer the other genres in learning how to practice effectively and with enjoyment.
you're brilliant, can you do video on prince?
Hey Bob, thank you and yes! Great call. I'll put it on the list. Prince is legendary. Thanks!
this is so beautifully said
Thanks Ethan! Watch the full video on my channel if you've got time. I'm breaking down the performances of artists like Chappell. Thanks again!
Been waiting for this!!
How was it?!
Subbed, great breakdown
Coper, you are a legend, thank you for coming on board. Dropping a new episode today. Are you an artist?
@@Luthermallory Been playing guitar for years, always been interested in songwriting and playing out, particularly developing my own sound an style although struggled with putting it all together. These type of breakdowns are helpful. Look forward to the new episode. Cheers
My absolute favorite band! Saw them in Philly last fall and I'm anxiously awaiting another album and tour. ❤
I have not been able to see them live yet. Very cool Jem! Are you an artist?
@Luthermallory I'm not an artist myself, unless car karaoke counts 😁 just avid lover of music

Loved this 🫶
Glad to hear it! Thank you for coming through!!
I came across this video while down a 1975 TH-cam rabbit hole. It could be the gummies, but I loved this analysis video! I found it almost meditative...but that could also be the gummies. ;-)
Nice bdouglas! Glad to hear it. I believe the good content was enhanced by the gummies. Watch the Tiny Desk episode sober and if it sucks then we will know. 😂 are you an artist?
9:19 feeling so called out, yes the smallest choices they make make us go CRAZY 😃 but they’ve also curated an insane parasocial relationship with us and that’s something else ENTIRELY to study
INCREDIBLE performance art tho i hope more performances blend with art like this as concerts evolve. even if the audience doesn’t realise what they’re watching, everyone feels it.
You're absolutely right, Hanax. The parasocial element is utterly fascinating. I'm looking into how I could cover that in the series. Or another series.
@@Hanax_01 Well said, Hanax. The high-concept stuff is really felt when the artist has vision. I hope more artists lean into the theatrical too.
Plus, there’s Matty Healy. ❤
Incredible stuff! Do Bon iver 22, a million and Magdalena Bay on their last tour
Wow, Bon Iver is great call. Thanks for this suggestion Daniel.
The 1975 are brilliant. Their live shows are the best. Lovely video.
Agreed and thanks for watching!
Chicken and the egg bro… These types of performance gimmicks done by some random band who doesn’t have incredible music and a huge following would make people cringe. The music is what matters.
But, a ton of people cringe at this band too. The music certainly matters. I think the right people love an artist who is willing to take risks in the music or in the performance.
best band and best front man ever, I love them sm
Absolutely! Thanks for coming through!!
I love the part about only 3% getting you on every level. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks for coming by Jenn. I love that too. It takes expectation off the insane idea that we should all be working towards getting world famous! Are you an artist? DM some stuff on IG if you have anything I could check out!
I’m an older fan of this band & when I found them in 2016, after seeing them live, I was simply hooked. I’ve seen them dozens of times, but seeing this specific show for their opening night of tour was 🤯🤯🤯 Besides their music which switches between genres & moods, Matty is simply a great frontman that captivates me over & over. I adore this band ❤️
Very cool Kim, thanks for sharing. Captivating is the right word for Matty. I also adore this band!
Favorite band ever. They are so incredible live.
Truly. What do you like about them?
Fun fact. The band made this theatrical performance up because it stopped them from getting smoking fines in their other shows which were less theatrical.
@@alechaseyes8146 ha! Interesting. Thanks for sharing.
Not entirely, he joked once that all this was only because the rules state that you cannot smoke unless it's part of a theatrical performance. He definitely wasn't serious, just a happy beneficial accident 😅
This is awesome. Love the variation in performance focus and how obvious these states were as soon as you drew my focus to them.
@@EdgetoneStudios focus is the underrated performance skill. Much appreciated and welcome back. Thanks for watching again!

@@josiahkennedy05 aye Josiah! I'm thrilled to have grabbed you. I'll keep them coming. Thanks for being here!
You seem so genuinely impressed with some of these artists, it's contagious. I can feel that you actually enjoy talking about this stuff, thats really nice
@@Flora_Moana thank you. I really really love this stuff.
This is sooo interesting! I love analyzing stuff! Especially performances. And i love even more, when people who are knowledgeable in a specific field, analyze stuff for me and explain it in a way i can understand, so I can then go and notice all these little details and appreciate performances on an even deeper level. Thank youuuu!
@Flora_Moana appreciate you flora! Thanks for coming through and for the feedback!
another great video, i really enjoyed this. would you ever consider covering stromae in one of your videos? i'm specifically talking about the full racine carrée live concert that is on his youtube. i've always found him to be a great performer, similar to matty healy of the 1975 in many ways. he sings in french but the video has english subtitles.
@karthikayagrawal1884 thank you for coming back! Excellent suggestion, I will incorporate him at some point. Appreciate you!!
this video was insanely valuable! im not a musician or a performer, i am currently a design student interested in animation, and i still felt like i could apply so many of these moments that you found into my work. here's a few: the one that i really really really liked was about COMMITTING. have an intention, and really lean into it. i've found myself being overly critical of whatever i do as i'm doing it, and it makes me overthink and fail at it. i've gotta learn to believe, to have the confidence. believing in the decisions that i make. if i'm working for someone and they want something changed, more often than not i'd do it rather than standing up for my choices. i think thats a skill i'd like to have. the thing about not having to appeal to everybody was pretty great too. i post things on instagram and i often get discouraged if something i've made doesn't get enough likes or comments. having the courage to put in those slow bits or empty spaces in. i feel like it is also a pretty vulnerable move to do that. in that empty space you're opening yourself up to scrutiny and i would find it really difficult not to implode haha overall, fantastic video. also this came to me at the perfect timing because i only watched the madison square garden video in its entirety a couple days back and spent the time until now obsessing over it. this was a godsend.
This is incredibly validating
What aspect specifically?
this deserves a bigger audience
Thank you my artist friend! We are on the way!!!!!!
I'm not a performer at all, but I just recently watched this whole performance, and as a behavior analyst I was really hooked, and was paying attention to all the little things he was doing as he performed. He really is so incredibly skilled at doing all these things that captivate the audience. I really enjoyed watching your breakdown of it.
@G13542 very interesting! What caught your eye about his performance from a behavioral analyst perspective? Thanks for watching!!
All I can say .... What an excellent and insightful and educational analysis. We know one of your gifts now .... and you had my attention throughout. Thank you. I will continue to be back. Liked and sub'd!! p.s. I think I need to watch this a few more times ... simply brilliant.
Hey Rudolf thank you! I appreciate your feedback, enthusiasm, and sub. Are you an artist?

@@KellyBado thanks for always coming through Kelly!
I live in South Africa, and watch their concerts over and over. Never fails to keep you IN the concert even though its on a screen. 👌
The stage presence is so captivating. Thanks for watching and hello from Toronto! Appreciate you.
“Look at this audience. So many white people. Is 90% of them guys?” 😂😂
Ha! And they are all identical looking! What's going on over there? 😂
fantastic video and analysis. thank you. you hit the nail on the head by comparing the set to a Tarantino film, since much of Matty Healy's aesthetic and early songwriting was inspired by True Romance
Ah! I didn't know the True Romance fact, very cool! What a visionary band. Thank you for watching and commenting!!
My favorite band, THE 1975!!
What do you like about them Cassie?
@Luthermallory Their music! I was on my late 20's since I've heard about their songs. It was been on my playlist for a while. That moment in my life was one of the painful stage. The 1975 songs help me through it. Now, at 36. I still love them! ❤️ from The Philippines.
And the sax too! The Live show on BBC. "If you believe" I think, that's the title of the song. Ooohhh, the sound of the sax, soo sexxyy!! That song live was sexy, raw, deep..
Nice breakdown. Thanks!
Thanks for watching and good luck with your channel! Looks like good stuff. I Subbed. See you around.
@@Luthermallory Thank you!
I’ve loved the 1975 for years and it was really interesting to see you dissect their performances in this way. As someone who is not a musician, just as person who really loves music, it made me appreciate their art and the amount of thought and energy they put behind everything they do so much more.
Hey glad to hear it! Thanks for watching. What a truly great band. They are so pro.
The members of this band (including their touring musicians) are incredibly skilled and dedicated. Their energy on stage is honestly unmatched, and I enjoyed seeing them live more than any other band I've seen so far. I love how they span so many different genres with their music, and their attention to detail is truly outstanding. They have excellent stage presence and chemistry, and there was never a dull moment for me watching them live.
Beautiful review! Agreed.
Its my fav band, but Matty admit he isnt a good guitar player, they only use the pentatonic scale in all of they albums, etc. I think they are very good enought to be who they are, but not the best muscichans you could get in the band, but... they are very creative
@@hankraussen4142 Interesting take, Hank. Thanks for coming thru!
The music ‘industry’ and pop fans: “classical music is irrelevant” “classical music is boring” “classical music is dead” The 1975: We gonna do a whole dramatic set using Mahler Symphony #5 as the only audio.
How interesting eh? It's like if it's framed as pop you're allowed elements of classical but if it's framed as classical you have to stay traditional? I see how consistently bothered you are by the classical hard-ass-ness. I understand completely!
@@Luthermallory I also love how much jazz is incorporated into the music and the show! People don't even realize it because of their pop framing.
